Have you seen the mess they have made of the Road Hole bunker on St Andrews Old Course. It is still a formidable bunker but now no worse than some on my home course and probably yours. What makes it worse is it seems the change was made by the contractor who maintains the course without agreement with the R & A. A course like the Old Course needs a bunker to humble the greats of golf. The change was probably made with a view to speeding up play which on the Old Course should never be an issue. It's only ever played by visitors and they should have time to savour the experience.

What did they actually change about the bunker? It sounds as though the huge wall at the front has been reduced in height or something silly like that? Why play around with something that doesn't need attention of that nature.

I'm hitting the woods just great,
but I'm having a terrible time getting out of them.

Hi jockotaylor,

Below is a link to St Andrews and an article covering the work on the road hole bunker. Hopes this dispells your fears about the work changing the layout.

I read in the newspaper this morning that "the hole has been restored to how it was in the 1970s"
