looks like it depends heavily on the individual. From the gofl digest equipment page they range from the 180 yard mark up to 200 ish...  mind you the only players mentioned on golf digest are fairly well known... don't think the "average pro" gets a mention...
cheers all

i see badds gets a mention. average pro??? tongue.gif tongue.gif

Keep an eye on what club the pros are hitting to the 16th at Augusta in the final round. Last year Ernie was hitting an 8 iron 177 yards.  blink.gif

and If I'm not mistaken, Lefty hit an easy 3/4 PW from 144yards into the 14th, and only had 3 wood/8iron into the 18th...

maybe the ball flies further in the states!!! laugh.gif laugh.gif laugh.gif laugh.gif

But remember you are all talking in yards. 144 yards in only 129m that isn't all that far. Anyone can hit a club furtur than there usual solid swing if they throw everthing at it.

DAVE

The average solid swing for the likes of the better players on tour with a 5 irons would be around 180-190m. Not the 210-220 that some people are suggesting.

Shotlink doesn't lie! It's based on facts not the "one off" shot in favourable conditions.

Heck, earlier in the year I hit a 7 iron from 200m to a middle pin only to watch it go one bounce through the green. But I'm not going to stand here and claim I can hit my 7 iron 200m+ (condition vary)...

Trust Shotlink.

The average length professionals on tour would average 180-190 with their five-iron.

There is a huge myth a lot of u fellas are seduced into...

Pros don't hit the ball THAT far...

I hit my 5-iron about 165m (90%)

I've played with a lot of pros in my time (Even bigger built, stronger pros) and they don't it further than me... A few of them might hit it a metre or 2 longer but they don't average 180-190 metres with a 5-iron..

Get a grip...

Brew - It was John Cook. he was a breath of fresh air with his comments.

I've seen (more than once tongue.gif ) when a Commentator has said ''well so and so hit an 8 iron on this 185 yard par 3 !!'' The camera then cuts back to player as he's holding his club with the sole facing the camera and it clearly shows 5 iron tongue.gif

Listening to commentators at the recent Bell South classic and Lefty hit a driver (forget which hole but it was a 455 or so yard par 4) and the commentator was saying ''Wow, he just smashed it , thats gone miles and may never come down, what a drive, Gosh he hits is sooooo far !!''. Anyway when lefty played his next shot the graphics showed he still had 185 yards to the flag !!

Work it out for yourself as to how far his 'Wonder drive' went !! dry.gif

I hit my 5-iron about 170-180m which is about 200yds.

I hit my 4-iron about 190m, my 3 iron around the 200m mark and I can sometimes nail my 2 iron about 220m.

the gap between my 5 and 4 shits me to tears.

To clarify, I'm 6'3" and hit it pretty long, but I know top amateurs around Brisbane that hit further than me pretty easy so I reckon the pro's to hit it THAT far. Aaron Snape, used to hit his 9-iron around 150m when I played with him, and there's a bloke getting around Brisbane called Damon Moody who is the logest hitter I've ever seen.

For those of you who have contested the Indooroopilly Jug, where they turn 14 East into the 1st, move the tees forward and call it a Par 4. This is a true story, I was grouped with Damon on this hole and he hit Driver, Wedge to a back left pin. I hit Driver, 5 iron to a front left bunker :*(

i dont care what anyone says, pros, and top amateurs would easily hit their 5 iron 190-200m.
i hit my 5 iron 185-190 with a smooth swing, and can get it to 200 when i give it to it.
i am certainly no pro, and i am certainly not a massive hitter of the ball.
i can, and do, hit it long, but i know of a few people that blow it past with ease!!!

ok to follow up my last post, I just went through golf digest and here are some 5 iron specs (carry),

Rich Beem 190 28degree
Ernie Els 200 27degree
Nick Price 185 29degree
Mike Weir 195 28degree
Aaron Baddeley 200 28degree
Darren Clarke 200 27degree
Robert Allenby 190 27degree
Vijay Singh 205 28 degree
Jay Hass 190 26degree
Zach Johnson 195 28 degree
Padraig HArrington 200 27 degree
Scott verplank 190 28 degree

btw, those are all yards not metres. so 190 yards is 173m and 200 is 183m or thereabouts.

thats the par 5 that runs along meiers road, if so thats huge(depending how far they move the tee's foward)yep thats the one, and they just move the tees forward to the ladies tee's over the ditch there. Terribly tough opening hole! Long, dogleg right up a sharp hill to a tough green :/

In 4 rounds of the Jug, I parred twice, bogeyed once and had a double. Didn't hit it in regulation once.
