I was just thinking about how far the Pro's hit their clubs. I know on the USPGA the top driver averages around 300 yards... but what about the other's in the bag... does anyone have a good link???

generally they will only hit their 5 iron, for example, about 190-200m, but that is at about 80%. if they were to give it everything, which they never do, they could get an extra 20m.
when i played with my mate adam tongue.gif in queensland, i actually was keeping up with him off the tee, or he was keeping up with me wink.gif , with the driver, but i actually asked him to give one 100% on one hole, where he proceeded to nail it down the middle about 45-50m passed me!!

www.golfdigest.com
is a good website to check out distances. go to 'equipment', and then 'whats in my bag', which features different players clubs etc, and gives a run down of their distances with each club in the bag.

I've seen coverage where Duval and Tiger hit 7 irons to a 200 yard Par3...

sites like GD or their magazine have WITB features, which states their average carry thru the bag...

I hit 5 iron about 170m. When I give it an extra 20% it goes about 50m laugh.gif

I don't know butchy. I read Adam Scott averages 170m m with a 5iron.
I think most pros don't hit it as far as everyone thinks they do.
I also watched a 'Playing Lessons from the Pro's' on the Golf Channel on the u.k with someone I cant remember who, and he said that the U.S commentators just guess what club they hit, and usually make it longer to make people think oooohhh.
This guy on the golf channel then picked out a three iron to hit to a 200m par 3.
Quite interesting I though. Kind of thing that probably happens a lot.

Not as far as you think.

From the April Golf Digest: "Next time a TV commentator says a pro hits a 5-iron 220 yards, consider the average PGA Tour distances on shots from the fairway to Par 4s, as measured by ShotLink.

9i: 139 yards
8i: 152 yards
7i: 163 yards
6i: 172 yards
5i: 181 yards
4i: 189 yards
3i: 199 yards"

i guarantee you, if tiger, or ernie, or adam scott had 190m-200m they could take a normal swing with a 5 iron and get it there easily. reason for longer clubs may be for a lower ball flight, cutting it in there somewhere etc

Spot on, I think there is a little bit of Americ wanting you to buy the clubs the pro uses and you ll hit it this far sort of thing.
Also remember Tiger etc. is in a minority being that he is incredibly strong and fit. We re talking about the average pro on the pga tour. Not scott and Tiger. And actually, this is an interesting staistic.
Rid Pampling last year averaged 296 yards i think, and he is short. And this year Adam Scott is averagin aat about 286 or something.

swing was still solid, but almost fell over, at the end of the swing.
the balance, and coordination of these guys is just amazing, especially when you see it up close like that!!

i understand that some of their extra distance for iron shots is due to their impact position (they effectively deloft the club).

when you say delofting, do you mean hitting with hands ahead of the clubhead.
it really isnt delofting the club, plus everyone, or most people, would hit the ball like this anyway, otherwise we would all be hitting the ball fat and skinny the whole time, and scooping the ball op in the air!!

Keep an eye on what club the pros are hitting to the 16th at Augusta in the final round. Last year Ernie was hitting an 8 iron 177 yards. blink.gif

i would say the average for tour pros would be 190-200 yard of carry with a 5I.

177 yards with an 8 with a tailwind seems normal for a bigger hitter.

looks like it depends heavily on the individual. From the gofl digest equipment page they range from the 180 yard mark up to 200 ish... mind you the only players mentioned on golf digest are fairly well known... don't think the "average pro" gets a mention...

cheers all
