Was browsing the FGI website, and came across this.
I thought I had it all figured out, but got stumped towards the end.

If you guys have the time...give it a go...if not, copy it and send it along to your mates. smile.gif

Cheers,
Mw.

EINSTEIN'S RIDDLE:

There are 5 houses in 5 different colors.
In each house lives a person with a different nationality.
The 5 owners drink a certain type of beverage, smoke a certain type
of cigar, and keep a certain pet.
No owners have the same pet, smoke the same brand of cigar or drink
the same beverage.

"The question is: Who owns the fish?"

HINTS:
The Brit lives in the red house
The Swede Keeps dogs as pets
The Dane drinks tea
The green house is on the left of the white house
The green house's owner drinks coffee
The person who smokes Pall Mall rears birds
The owner of the yellow house smokes Dunhill
The man living in the center house drinks milk
The Norwegian lives in the first house
The man who smokes Blends lives next to the one who keeps cats
The man who keeps the horse lives next to the man who smokes Dunhill
The owner who smokes Bluemasters drinks beer
The German smokes Prince
The Norwegian lives next to the blue house
The man who smokes Blends has a neighbor who drinks water

Einstein wrote this and he said 98% of the world couldn't solve it.
It's not hard. Just pay attention and be patient.

I think I've solved it. What is FGI so I can check the answer?

I was right. Found the answer on another site. Not that hard, just have to think, and use logical deduction

malby...

I'm just wondering if there's a trick to the riddle. Riddle being a Riddle, I thought what I did last night was more like a math problem. When I first saw it, I was actually looking for a cryptic clue somewhere... laugh.gif

anyway, it was a good 'head scratcher'!!!

FGI - www.freegolfinfo.com

good site...but geared more towards the yanks...I found it a little bit difficult to make my way thru the site...not as good as www.iseekgolf.com!!! biggrin.gif

Its not a riddle. Its a logic problem.

I used to do a lot of them for fun.. heh...

Easiest way, is to draw out graphs, and mark out what you do know, then from there you can work out what other people definitely DON'T have, rather than what they do have.. Makes it easier, because you can say stuff like, "The german can't live in the red house, because we know the brit lives there" etc etc.. Thats how I did it.

sticking it into a table (or excel) or whatever, makes it easier to see what information you have is used, and what is free to use.

fun none the less.

Here's a hint to those of you who haven't worked it out yet (and these are pretty obvious, but they will get you started on the right track)

We know the norwegian man lives in the first house, and he lives next to the blue house. We also know that the person in the 3rd (middle house) drinks milk.

I aimed to get the colour of the houses worked out first.

Another clue is, that the green house is on the left of the white house. So we know the norwegian does not live in either a white, or a green house (because the house next to his is blue). But we also know that the brit lives in a red house, so now with only 5 coloured houses, and we have 4 colours that the norwegian can definitely NOT have, we know that the Norwegian lives in a yellow house

You see how it goes?

good luck

malby...
gotta admire your dedication... smile.gif

all I did was to just print the riddle out, and work on the space underneath the problem.
But you're right...step by step...

if I was to make a suggestion, then it would be to have the houses left to right, and not up down as you had in the excel...makes it easier when you come to the 'green house on the left of the white house'...

how lame am I???
