Given the current climate, whats peoples thoughts on whats going to happen with clubs given people are being laid off left right and centre and will be struggling to pay home loans let alone club fees.

Grim.

Daniel Andrews has effectively closed all Victorian golf courses.
You can only go out as a single player except for whoever you live with, practice greens and ranges cannot be used. Hence there is no point in having a pro shop open.

The initial period for this is until midnight 13 April. But it would take lots of optimism to even hope for any improvement in just a few weeks.

A number of ground staff will not work and the courses will be badly out of condition so curators will have to spend a lot of time to repair the damage if they even bother.

depending on financial situation of the club, the property might be worth more than is worth spending to keep club going.

Like any fire sale the stronger clubs might be able to buy the weaker ones for next to nothing from the Voluntary Administrators.

We had that yesterday, almost verbatim.
Today, updated legal opinion and the course is now closed.

27/3: It is Golf Australia’s recommendation that, based on the Victorian Department of Health and Human Services directive issued as part of the Victorian Government’s Stage 2 restrictions regarding COVID-19, all golf clubs and facilities should close as soon as practicable until April 13, 2020.

The directive that prohibits social sports gatherings applies to golf clubs and facilities, which are classified as ‘recreational facilities’ under clause 5 of the directive. A copy of the directive is located here.

I reckon this will break some clubs.  Club with a large portion of their revenue from poker machines and green fees will be especially vulnerable.

I agree that it could, depending on their level of debt.
But clubs currently have minimal outgoings, just maintenance and security.

Depends how much debt clubs are operating with and then how sympathetic the bankers are . If minimal debt they should get through as most staff will be stood down meaning no wages

Clubs may decide to keep a skeleton crew of superintendents to keep greens in some sort of order, fwy, don't need to worry too much  and tees grow.

If do this it will make the course salvageable again in June or July or whenever we play next.

My thoughts on what appears to be a shutdown period...assuming that clubs maintain a level of maintenance staff, would it not be the right time to bring forward any maintenance such as coring and so on...assuming that it fits in with the requirement of the course...whilst no one is playing. It would keep the maintenance crew gainfully employed...one assumes course prep would be at a minimum now...whilst getting some work done that would make conditions as good as possible when golfers are allowed back on?

Provided they have the cash flow to do so. My club has their annual memberships due on Wednesday. And they get a lot of revenue from green fee play, corporate days and event hire. So I fear for their ability to stay afloat, let alone undertake course works.
It's probably only the richest of clubs with money in the bank that can do it.
Perhaps a whole lot of clubs can band together and pool key maintenance staff and equipment and maintain a few courses on a rotation basis?

Job Keeper should help with this, particularly if clubs and greens staff can come to mutual arrangements about reduced hours and wages temporarily if that's needed by the club to avoid layoffs
