I see so many people today using their phone to help them play golf and I've become addicted to google maps when I'm driving or trying to find a business in the city. I've decided to crawl out from under my rock and start using some apps. I have a rangefinder which I've enjoyed but I don't think it gives me the full picture. I've done a bit of research but I guess you won't really now until you start using it whether the app is any good. I'd like to use a gps and stats tracker and don't want to spend hundreds.

Does anyone have suggestions and is it worth paying a subscription (some of them seem pretty cheap) to get a more detailed version?

I use mScorecard

https://www.mscoreca...ecard/index.php

I use it to measure distance of actual shots, clubs, on course and sometimes score with it.

But.

Find I prefer the analogue method of tracking stats, shot misses, etc.

I have just started using Arccos Caddie. Now that i have an I- phone  ( an old 6) it works well. It was crap with my Android phone. To get the most out of it, you need sensors on each club and the App then can determine which club you are using ( via bluetooth) and how far each  shot went. It misses some ( small putts mainly) maybe they don't make enough noise, but you can add shots it misses at the end of each hole or at the end of a game. After 5 rounds the App can start to suggest what club to make shots ( hence the caddie name). It is a bit more than a GPS with a nice aerial view of the course. It offer stats at the end of each round and suggests where you suck. For me it has been suggesting my tee shots are not as good as the rest of my game, which is rated at my current handicap.

Cobta and Ping seem to have adopted this App.

I can spell reasonably well, even if in American at times. I cannot type well , so please look for the key I intended to use within one key of the strange one I used.

The other useful feature that Arccos Caddie has is that you can drag a pointer into position between your current position and the target /pin. Then it will tell you how far it is to your selected landing zone and also how far it is left to the pin. I found this useful to work out lay up shots.  As long as you know your club distances and your favourite wedge distance, it helps with club selection options.

One thing I notice is that it averages your club lengths based on past shots. Say for example I have been using my 5 iron for punching out of trouble, it tells me I hit the 5 iron 140 m; the same as my 6 iron. It does elsewhere give you maximum best shot distance, worst distance and probable distance ( must be like a 70 %  of shots or something).

You can go in to the club and deselect punch and chip shots from counting towards your averages

When you log in yo Arcoss on your PC you should be able to get the history of all of your shots with each club and deselect the ones that aren't useful

EDIT I just logged in amd it appears that that is no longer and option - the graph shows which shots have and haven't been included but you can't seem to edit that anymore - sorry x I've led you astray

pain? I feel less digitally challenged now, because I couldn't find an edit function. I will ask their help line folks to see if it can be done.
