Please forgive me but I'm going to tell a long story......Some on here may know this story
For a while now Dr Sues and I have been dealing with issues involving her son Rees. Some of you ISGers, who were at the QLD Nats last year, will know Rees also as "BEEF". He took on this tag due to his size (6'3 and 139 Kgs) and red beard similar to the golfer. He started to come to games with me last year and "Caddy" and we both made the trip to Qld without Dr Sues, as he really wanted to get involved in golf. He enjoyed the social involvement with different golfers and the gentle kidding of mates during the round......not to mention the drinks. We even bought some clubs for him to start out.
Just prior to the Nats, Rees and I went to the Sun Skin Doctor and had a check up. At about the time Rees was having trouble breathing while lying down in bed so he went to the Doctor who found some "gunk" in his lungs that they could clean out in a minor op. They told him to lose some weight by January 2019 (as they didn't want to put him under anesthetic, then go back and they would look into it. The skin doctor called him back about some concerns with some moles/spots and he had some of them cut out.
After getting back from the Nats, Rees worked hard to lose the weight and during this time the doctor arranged tests and MRI's. As time went on further tests found testicular cancer and cancer in his kidney. From there they found he had Deep Vein Thrombosis (DVT) in his leg. He kept fronting up for operations that needed to be done to ensure that things were controlled given the cancer. As he couldn't still be put under anesthetic all these operation were done with local anesthetic. As he had no work (he was working as a casual employee) we had to find money for these operations. His doctor wanted to ensure his operations were in a "clean" hospital free of germs that could cause him other issues.
Throughout this time Rees, who is 24 yo but still living with us, took it upon himself to deal with this himself . He didn't want his mum (Dr Sues) to worry too much so he only told her information sparingly. He's declined offers for us to support him with his Hospital and Doctor visits, which we have to honour, as he's an adult.
The crux of what I'm saying here is about Mens Health and cancer, in particular. I know that some of the "ISG family" know Rees and Dr Sues thought I could post something about his plight. It's very hard to know how to tell some people.....should you ring them, text them do they need/want to know.......it's a difficult position to be in. I'm not sure a public forum is proper either but I've been on ISG long enough to know there are a lot of decent people on here.
I know some of you already know and have responded in a PM to me but what I'm trying to say (in a long winded way) is that the cancer assist foundation have been a great assistance to us In reducing some of the medical bills that we've had to find money for. I'm sure a lot of it comes from donations....so next time you see someone outside Coles rattling a tin....think of Rees and all the little children at Peter Mac Hospital and slip them a coin or two.
As for getting skin check ups......I was lucky.....my first was last year with Rees and I got an "all good" see you in 12 months. This from a kid in the 60's and 70's who ran around all summer in his bathers and nothing else. Some people can be lucky....and some get dealt a **** hand. People....... get regular check ups.
I'm sorry about making this personal about our life but Dr Sue and I feel that we want those who know Rees to be aware. I'm sure everyone reading this knows of someone else who has suffered from it. It's a bastard of a disease.
