Setting Achievable Handicap Goals.......

I always read the Race to 6, Race to 16, Journey to break 90, etc etc and garner inspiration from our playing journey.

 

We each have our own challenges to achieving goals so having a goals thread more specific to our own 

 

Id like to start a new thread for our handicaps with actual SMART goals, which may just be amalgamating a few of the other tracking threads into one and for each of us to set a specific goal for end of year and this time next year. Or this can be a separate thread?

Good luck with those handicap improvement goals, gents.  I wish you all the best in achieving those.

 

Mine are a bit different.  Now that I'm in my seventies, where things decline more rapidly, my aim is to maintain what I've got for as long as I can.
My current handicap of 16.2 has been somewhat stagnant for quite a few years.  It means that, at most courses, I get to play off around 18.  I need that extra shot per hole just to get to the green on many holes.  Far too often, I've used up par just getting there, then I need a 1-putt for 2 points.
It's not that I hit the ball all that short, generally as long as others off a similar handicap.  An improvement in technique into the release would surely help.  Recent lessons didn't.  Maybe it's just that I'm too old and inflexible to achieve much better.

 

Anyway, my goal is to not get worse, inevitable as though that may be.

OB  exactly why SMART goals are needed for each of us. Staying on current is a legitimate goal for you.

 

Ive had on average 1x comp round a month though actually had 10 rounds in two weeks for Nationals and several months of no golf at all.

 

 

A little practice, keeping body loose and a few more games I should hit my 4.0 easily, BUT  if work keep picking up it wont happen.

Specific
Measurable
Action-oriented
Realistic
Timeframed

or

Specific
Measurable
Attainable
Relevant
Timeframed

???

Not to split hairs, but 'realistic' covers 'attainable and relevant' ... It's the "action" that is key.

You touched on that, in your reply to OB.

I think this needs an 'action" criteria too. Will make it more difficult to summarise, but, without a 'how' element it's more a dream than a SMART goal.

Maybe you can include an action code.

Play: C4 as in play 4 comp rounds a month

Practise: P8 as in 8 practise (range, practise rounds, putting) sessions a month

Fitness: F6 as in 6 fitness (gym, stretch, whatever) a month.

Splitting hairs with me?  cant happen unless you have a microscope!

 

Agree need to "action" somehow but for ISG having something more achievable to start is probable better for time being.

 

NO use being in a race to 6 when you are a 20capper! This is where time frame comes into play.

 

All the above goals are reasonable of about 1 shot difference.

C4 can be achieveable

P8 ummm nearest practise range 140kms away, work 8.00 to 4.30pm winter time no effing daylight for a practise round

F6 WTF is a gym

Nice thread idea.

I think my days of playing golf 3 to 4 days a week will soon be over as I might need to work for the man again. The last 6 months have been pure golfing bliss. My goals reflect what will be golf 1 or 2 times a week:

10.1/9/8.5
