Sumo wrestlers all over Japan are now feeling a distinct lack of love.

Sumo wrestlers all over Japan are now feeling a distinct lack of love.

Believe it or not, speed is more important than power in Sumo. In the last 20 years the weight of Yokozuna has dropped dramatically. The likes of Akebono and Mushashimaru at around 235kg has dropped to 165kg for current Yokozuna Rikisaburo.

One of my favourite sports which I attended as often as possible on my trips to Japan.

I actually didn’t play underage sport other than soccer where I made the Victorian squad of 22 but didn’t get a game. Only played open age sports where, at the tender age of just 16, I captained the school soccer, cricket, basketball teams and was one of the two runners for the school in 100 and 400. BTW, I did open the batting and bowling as is the captain’s prerogative.

What Mouldy has neglected to tell us is that waaaaay back when he played junior soccer there were only 22 kids in the state that actually played the sport.

Every other kid in his age group was playing Aussie Rules and actively harassing the "phuggin wogs" that played the round ball game.

He was the first one cut for the Vic squad.

As for the other sports, just how small was the High School, you went to?

I've seen your level of co-ordination and it's downright frightening, and totally incomprehensible, that you could have captained, or represented, in anything other than the school drama team.

Karingal High School, about 800-900 kids, and tough as. Kids from the Pines, Kananook, Karingal including lots of pommie migrants like me. Captain of the footy team was St Kilda legend Gary Colling who was also in the basketball team. Russell Greene was 3-4 years behind.

Get to school early and pay for your lunch order. Hence no money.

I learnt my lesson as a kid in working class England getting shaken down at about 9 years of age. Put any money in your socks, clacker or anywhere other than your pockets.

Always remember getting out of one thrashing at Karingal as I had my arm in plaster and the nice thug felt guilty about belting someone with one arm.

I find it quite funny when people decry the violence/lawlessness today. Franghistan was no place to walk alone more than 50 years ago.
