Hi, I know these topics come up a bit. I've done a search but not finding really what I'm after. Sorry if i'm repeating old material.

I'm a 38yo with two little ones (2 and 4). I was previously a member at Patterson River until the two yo was born. I live in Chelsea. I'm looking to get back into more regular golf again and have been looking around at courses / costs. Given the kids situation it's unlikely I'll play every week but hoping for around 3 rounds per month (35 rounds a year or so). Saturday's are a must for me, i really enjoy playing Saturday comp it is one of the main reasons i would join anywhere again. So I'm looking at a 7 day membership or some sort of deal (seems to be a few deals around trying to entice people my age). I don't want to spend more than $3k - i can't justify any extra money given I'm the sole income earner with the two little ones.

I've looked at Pat River, Sandhurst, Keysborough, Southern, Spring Valley. Any others i should consider?

The front runners at the moment are Keysborough or Sandhurst. Although Keysborough is quote a lot more expensive than Sandhurst. Also i work in Mulgrave so swinging by either of these two after work is quite doable.

I love to practise so having a reasonable practise area would be great.

Any feedback on the above? I get the feeling Sandhurst is struggling a little financially at the moment? Also what's going on with the drive way there? I played Sandhurst in Jan and it was a mess to try and get in and out with Thompsons Rd works underway......!

Also any feedback on the age demographics of each? I'd be looking to meet some new people ideally somewhat around my age to play with each week.

Thanks.

I'm a member at Keysborough.
I was at Sandhurst before going to Keysborough.
Practice facilities, both short game and range are good at both.
Subs at Keysie for a 7 day are $3600ish. Give the office a call, there are vacancies in all categories. They will give you any and all details.
All the bunkers have recently been upgraded, drainage and sand, so lots of bounce on your sw.
Keysie has water all year round, most clubs are in real strife atm with water, especially the clubs on your list.
Cheers

Thanks Wozz, can I ask why you changed from Sandhurst to Keys?

How do you find getting tee times on a Saturday? Guessing it books out pretty quickly each week for the prime times?

Also how accepting of new members is keys? From my experience some clubs are a lot better with this than others.

Pat river has a current deal of 7 day membership for $815.

plus you pay green fee of $35 for those game you do play.

this might be a good option and give you flexibility.

given you will indicated around 35 rounds per year this is $1225 so that becomes attractive financially

given you were a previous member should be easy.

course is good and good practice facilities

Wozz, is that just to rent a share to play and how much is it to get the full package ( yearly subs, share cost and or the rental fee on top of the normal subs, comp fees etc. ? )

From each of their websites, the current deals are on offer.

Sandhurst
7 day special, non share 6days tee sheet. No joining fee
$3040 Inc insurance, hc etc. Silver membership level

Keys
7 day, share inc. top membership level
$3671 Inc share, insurance, hc etc

Pat river (30-39) 7 day special
$2087 Inc insurance, hc etc

Concern with the Sandhurst deal is that the tee sheet for gold members opens 14 days, whereas for the above is only 6 so could be hard to get a preferred tee slot.

Pat River seems a very good deal.

Keys and Sandhurst both have points type membership deals as well however these would restrict me to about 16 or so rounds a year (playing on a Saturday).

Wozz's point about the conditioning at Keysie is very valid.
I'm also a 7 day member and right through a very lean period rain wise for Melbourne, Keysie's fairways remained in excellent nick.

Hey Jon

That is for renting a share.

If paying by installments there is an addition $100.

$3900 is pretty close to the mark.

Hey Blender

I was a very happy member at Sandhurst for 2 years.

5 day member, 2 courses, $1500 a year, a regular group of ripper blokes.

I played at keysie for the 1st time with iseek on a Sunday.

Had 19 points, missed naga by a bee's ticklish bits.

Was completely blown away by the condition of the course.

Far and above Sandhurst.

Joined on the Monday.

Been at Keysie 8 years.

Never looked back.

Getting a tee time on a Saturday is never an issue.

I've had to put my name down on a waiting list a couple of times, but never missed out on a game.

You have access to the time sheets, the same as everyone else. There's no, some getting access earlier than others, that l'm aware of.

There isn't a person at the club l wouldn't play with.

So what's the total cost just renting a share and yearly subs + etc ?

Or, what's the share worth ?

I can't remember what the cost to rent a share is.........i'd be guessing $150 a year.

Subs, share, insurance, $200 bar levy and anything else l can't remember is $3824.

If you pay by monthly installments, add another $100.

How does it hold up in the wet these days? Corner of 6 and 17 were always problematic.

No doubt it's mint in the summer.

I think we teed up during winter 3 years ago, otherwise buisness as usual.
Corner of 6 is fine and 17 has been fine the last couple of years.

A lot of work was done to improve drainage on those holes and other spots that were traditionally struggling in the wetter months.

The last couple of seasons have seen a huge improvement

Wozz, teed up ?? The 17th is now in magnificent condition since the work of some 5 years ago. Visitors to the club have no hesitation in stating that Keysie is the best conditioned course in the area.
