Hi Guys, I have been a member here for a number of years but not really that active as a contributor. I am now in a position where I would like to take the next step in my golf development by becoming a member at a club . I would like some feedback/recommendations regarding some clubs that might be suitable for me. I usually pay green fees and regularly play at the local tracks near where I live like Ivanhoe, Bundoora, Royal Northcote and Royal Park. I have 1 mate that I play with regularly however have been playing solo recently which is becoming boring.

By way of background I live in Brunswick. I am keen to play on Saturdays and whenever I get a chance during the week. I have lots of flexibility with work at the moment so I can probably play once or twice during the week. I am looking for value for money, a good challenging course (preferably in the north or west) but also a club that isn't stuck in the 50's. I have never played in a competition before or had a handicap however I can break 90 quite easily on most days.

Any contribution/feedback would be greatly appreciated. My current options as I see them are:

1. Northern

2. Club Mandalay (not sure this is a club membership per se- more of a yearly pass)

3. Growling Frog (same comment as above)

4. Yarra Bend (same comment as above)

5. Mt Derrimut

Cheers

Do you fit in to any of the age brackets some clubs offer like under 30/40 ? That can make a massive difference in costs.

I will be 38 this year so I don't think I fit into any special category.

Heidelberg has an under 40 membership option which is fairly good value and is a pretty damn good course.
It’s a prick of a walk but it’ll keep you fit.
https://www.heidelbe...ership-options/

Otherwise the options you put up.
If stray away from yarrabend as that’s only Monday to Friday availability and full green fees on weekends.
Northern is very good
Mandalay seems pretty good. I just wouldn’t like playing there every week.

Kooringal is a good option as is sanctuary lakes.

Hi Ali

I'm also 38 and in Brunswick and I'm at Northern.  I'm happy to arrange a hit for you there if you'd like a look.  Course is in pretty good nick despite the zero rain, and the brand new clubhouse just opened.  We don't have a joining fee at the minute, will have one again relatively soon i suspect, but this has brought in a lot of younger members.

If I can win an OOM anyone can.

Good stuff Matt, is it only 20 minutes from Brunswick? Good option for someone who lives in that area. Also Heidelberg as mentioned but that is in Lower Plenty so probably a 30 minute drive.

Mandalay is more the traditional club structure...around $2K per annum, may be cheaper for under 40s.

Frog is an annual pass for course access and the club is a separate entity to the course. All up around $1700 per annum.

In my experience

I’m just over 38 (inches)

Yarra bend is a minimum 6 hour round on weekends and is dangerous with balls going everywhere and randoms picking up your golf balls Willy nilly.

Ivanhoe has small tee boxes that resemble the Himalayas. Shite full.

Royal Norfcote and Royal park are pretty much the same sort of set up.
Kyk grass interspersed with weeds with slow greens more randoms & dog walkers who pick up your golf ball.

Love the frog. A golf challenge on all fronts.
Be aware The public & the Roos do not rake.

Haven’t played Mandalay.

Scumshine (Mt Derrimut to the marketing Dept)
forget it. Locals think the bunkers are toilets.
Actually the whole place is a toilet.

Am a current member at Northern with snappy.
He’s a skinny runt who smashes it.
Drinks beer and follows a lady man footy club.
He likes a good sledge.
Pretty good practice facilities too.
Only $10 for a 100 pills.
Good luck matey

Despite the banter from those two check out Northern Ali. They have a Nine and Dine arvo session on Fridays I think.
