To be fair the Lankans had a tough schedule here with a pink ball Gabba Test and a seaming wicket in Canberra.
FWIW I reckon the bookies in India cleaned up

Lankans were toweled up by the Kiwi's on flat tracks before they arrived here.....

Wickets in South Africa made Australian conditions look tame, made Canberra wicket look like a road

I think Finch is shot mentally.
He needs to come home and have a sit down to get his head in the right spot for the World Cup.
The stop-gap experiment to have him opening in the tests has ruined him

He won’t have to worry but red ball.... Warner and Harris also Burns will probably fill the opening gap

I think the realisation that Smith will come back in as Captain at the World Cup and Davey at #1 has all but cooked any chance Finch has of keeping his place anyway.
I’m more concerned with the rest of the batting and whether Maxy will get a chance up the order

Well Finch isn’t up for it now. Might as well let him go and bring in someone else before it’s too late

Why should Smith and the other dickhead come back in?

Surely they, like everyone else, should make some decent runs at grade level before then possibly being selected for their state teams.

If that happens, then a decent amount of runs at state level should eventually see them catch the eyes of the national selectors ……. but that should take a couple of years I reckon, before they could possibly be considered. ;)

With out Smith and Warner The Australian Team have been uncompetitive and stand no chance in the 50 over game against the better teams. We are ranked 6th in the World Rankings and this flatters us.
We have to get over the fact our National Team are cheaters and get the best XI out on the park.
Screw all the do gooders and their self righteous indignation about what Warner did and Smith and Boof allowed to happen.
I don’t give us a snowballs chance in The Old Country but those two have a point to prove and need to come straight back in.
My squad
Smith
Warner
Marsh S
Maxwell
Wade
Stoinis
Short
Handscombe
Starc
Lyon
Zampa
Patterson
Hazelwood
Cummins

So the regular Shield season is over, just the final to go.

What would be the Ashes squad that you would choose based on this summer of cricket (note I'm talking about the Ashes here, not the World Cup)?

Normally an Ashes squad would be in the realm of 15/16 players.

For me, I would go with the 11 that played the Sri Lanka series, minus Marnus Labuschagne, as the successful incumbents plus Smith and Warner;

Marcus Harris

Joe Burns *

Usman Khawaja *

Travis Head *

Kurtis Patterson

Tim Paine *

Pat Cummins *

Mitchell Starc

Jye Richardson *

Nathan Lyon *

Steve Smith *

David Warner *

Will Pucovski

Josh Hazelwood

Marcus Stonis

James Pattinson *

The asterisk (*) are the guys that I would have in my 11 for the first Test. The observant amongst you may note only 10 players selected. My No.6 batsman would be a toss up between Patterson (incumbent), Pucovski or Stonis depending on form in the lead up and the condition of the pitch.

I wouldn't bother with a back-up wicket keeper, as our keeper is also the captain, so that means Wade misses out. Tough call on him but to me he's had his chance at this level and hasn't cut it previously.

I like having Joe Burns as he can bat anywhere within the top 6. Based on his 180 in the last start he gets first crack at opening which is harsh on Harris but that's the way it is. Other alternative is to not play (or select) Warner but regardless of the fact I think he's a wanker, his record warrants automatic selection.

No.6 is a contentious, flip-of-a-coin selection. Patterson did well (albeit against weaker opposition) but I think Pucovski is the future of the batting line-up. I also think Stonis is a much better all-rounder than Mitch Marsh and has a good future in the baggy green. I could see all 3 of them playing a role throughout the series.

I wouldn't take a second spinner, other than Holland, none of them are good enough and we're not going to ever play two spinners in the UK. Head and Smith can help out with spin as required.

Plenty of good bowlers to choose from and plenty that are hard done by to miss out. The nice thing is that there is also the 'A-Tour' which means plenty will still tour and get to press their claims. I would take guys like Jackson Bird, Scott Boland, Michael Neser, Chris Tremain based on Shield performance and who I think will do well in the UK.

I agree that Davey is a wanker and put him in the same category as Wade. I would not pick him for the Test team.
Handscombe deserves a spot as back up for Paine.
