My family has direct experience like Birdie Blitz. There is no shortage of housing and medical facilities. The issue is that it is not how aboriginal people live. It's a white world solution in an aboriginal world.

Which IMO is why despite the significant sums spent by governments of both persuasions conditions haven't improved. The way aboriginal people live - in a traditional sense - does not gel with how we live so when we try and provide a solution it doesn't work.

There are many highly gifted aboriginal people who are part of the solution - and they can't solve it either.

If anyone believes that the reason that life spans remain so low is because the Australian government's and people don't care and refuse to provide the resources required then I disagree with you. There are enormous sums available. There aren't clear solutions that actually work to implement.

The aboriginal culture is so deeply and fundamentally different to ours that the solutions we have available - even the ones that are thought of by aboriginal leaders themselves - don't work.

As for Australia Day if it could be demonstrated that a significant number of aboriginal people feel that it is insensitive then change it. It won't affect me which day it is. It won't hurt anyone who disagrees with changing it either. The aboriginal people have a lot of issues to deal with so it's a small thing for everyone else to celebrate on a different date.

Great post mate

Yes Weetie you get it. I agree with everything you have said except-
Indigenous Australians are not Aboriginals.
It may seem PC but Aboriginal and Torres Strait Islander people would be a respectful way of reference in future discussion.
I think it is kind of like referring to Europeans as Wogs. It is not an acceptable title to refer to a proud and spiritual people.
Government has over decades attempted to fix a problem created centuries ago. Until the wrongs and by that I mean all of them need to be addressed. Aboriginal and Torres Strait Islander People must be recognized in The Australian Constitution as Traditional Owners of the land and have rights to how and where they live according to their culture.
Using generalist statements regarding how the majority of a people see Australia Day is also part of the issue.
Elders of many tribes of Aboriginal and Torres Strait Islander Peoples have made it clear their views on the date this day is celebrated.
Cultural Diversity is more than just accepting that everyone hss a right to live their life in peace and make a contribution to society. For Aboriginal and Torres Straight Islander People they do not have this choice under the current Constitution.

except it is the exact opposite to be referring to the group of people by a derogatory nick name.

The term "aboriginal" is an adjective used to describe existing on a land from early times or before colonisation - this is not a derogatory term.

they are aboriginal people, Weet's only error was not to include the Torres Strait people.

I'll just go ATSI then if shorteneing to aboriginals is insulting

But it is nothing like saying wog - people don't walk past and go "Hey Aboriginal" as an insult like they would "Hey Wog"

I suspect PC heavy word games like this don't help make the debate seem relevant and important to the general publics - the opposite

The Torres Strait people are equally covered by the adjective I believe

As a person whose heritage is of the TSI part of ATSI, I read your original post and had no issue with your use of the phrase 'aboriginal people' in the manner it was used.

I agree with much of your post, not withstanding the problematic nature of ascribing cultural norms with too broad a brush-stroke.
