A nine hole competition suits “ time poor” players, late afternoon events (chook runs and the like) and players who are physically struggling with 18 holes.
There is a place for them.
18 holes comes from history...centuries ago in Scotland.
It might have been 14, 16 or 20 or something else.
In practice Clubs have not embraced 9 Hole Competitions despite encouragement from Golf Australia and State Associations.
I suspect they find it difficult to organise on regular competition days and the Committees don’t have their heart in it.
I would like to play 9 Hole comps at my Club but they tried an “all week” event which didn’t get enough interest so they abandoned it.
I hope they try something else around 9 holes. I will encourage the Committee to have another go. Maybe a men’s comp which starts an hour after the mid-week Women’s event.
I don’t have much worries about having 2 separate 9 holes for Handicapping. The system is pretty good taking into account all the factors that prevail on different days and different courses.
9 Hole comps could be good to get more people playing. That is needed.
