I have summised the responses and it is likely that the lower handicaps of our fraternity have generally voted for long game.

there is a saying "you can teach a longer hitter to be straight, but you can't teach a straight hitter to be long" or something like that, I am probably paraphrasing, but the point still stands.

everything else has generally been covered above

Can you teach a drunk to avoid houses when reversing?

Asking for a friend, well he isn’t really a friend.

as the old Army saying goes, those who can do, those who cannot don't open it up all the way before trying to reverse in

For me it's got to be short game, Bunkers especially.
I'm batting pretty consistent in the mid 80s with having 2/3 hitlers to 3/4 in one bunker or blading 1/2 over the green a round. Make a par or 2 from them and turn the others into bogeys and I'd be happy in the upper 70s.
I'm probably one of the shortest hitters around and am seemingly loosing distance at the age of 30 but can still get to the 380-390 par 4s with a bit of effort. All I want is a bunker game

Just hit 14 greens in reg, bogey the other 4 you miss and you're in the mid 70s without doing anything overly well.

Sink a couple of putts in there and you're getting to par or better.

Easy game.

Hahaha if only it was that easy, can't be to strait when im hitting a 5 wood from 190 which is usually to low to clear any face bunkers. You have witnessed the types of special I am on the golf course.

With Deege here.

Longer the game you have when you begin, more likely you are to be able to drop your cap quickly as the short game skills develop.

If I had a choice picking 2 beginner players as to who would have the lower cap within a given time frame with one having the ability to whack it long and the other who can hit decent shots <100meters, I would take the bomber every day of the week.

Whether you think you can, or think you cannot, either way you're probably right...

Yeah but it would be alot easier if you hit it further off the tee so you didnt have a 5 wood into mid length par 4s that are designed to be hit with a mid iron.

Making putts is the difference for me. I know I will make mistakes from tee to green. If I putt well it then gives you confidence across your whole game

Confidence will come and go during your 5 hours of play. it's a matter of accepting your mistakes. :) and play with it short or long game!

I've gone short game.

No point bombing it 300 if you can't hit an iron into a green from 130

true, that feeling is both priceless and downright disgusting.

Ultimately it's the short game. Stats don't lie. Spieth being Exhibit A. If you can knock it somewhere vaguely down the fairway, your ability to get it up and down will determine the rest.

And yet the world number 1 isn't Jordan Speith its Dustin Johnston who is hardly known for his short game
