Age and the rigours of life affect us all differently Hack. My brother also had to pull the pin on golf due to ongoing back issues and an arthritic hip. The hip in the end was the issue that stopped him playing altogether.
Feel free to join the peanut gallery with Max and let the rest of us know how to enjoy the game and LoL at the insanity of the usual threads.

Cheers Mick.

Funny thing is, I currently have the shorties, twitchiest most radical surfboard I've EVER owned or ridden and am not only really enjoying it, but have also been feeling fitter and healthier than I have in a long time.

The twisting and torque of the golf swing is just too much for my lower back. Yet, seems ok for surfing.

I'm the 47yo grommet in the surf lately. But, after golf yesterday and how I feel today, I see, get, the golfing gods message loud n clear. Unfortunately.

We have to learn to listen to our body sometimes and it happens that your body and golf don’t mix on a regular basis so I guess the occasional game is all that suits you. At least with surfing you know your physical and mental health are being taken care of in a positive way and that’s all that matters.

Maybe? It's not over yet ... 😲

I emailed my golf coach, Chris, with my lower back golf and overall health linkage synopsis. We had a chat yesterday.

Turns out we have a TPI certified physiotherapy near the club. So, we're going to have a chat with her, do some assessments and maybe, just maybe, get some golf strength and conditioning into my body to not only help my back, but improve overall my golfing fitness etc.

The interlinking of surf muscles n fitness vs golf strength n flexibility has me a little concerned. But, who knows, it might be complementary.

Watch this space!

That’s really sad news. Sounds like it was coming together score wise too. Backs are a pain. Best thing generally is to keep active. Stretching Pilates yoga physio and deep tissue massage.

Yep.

Got a foam roll from my osteopath, and a spiked ball thingy.

Bit like your golf, golf practice... I just need to make more of an effort to use them.

That said. I'm quietly excited about doing the TPI assessment. Just gotta get over the current weakness... It's slowly improving. I'd have maybe tested it on a longboard today but no chance in the current surf conditions.

I know my back recovery accelerates once I back surging. Even if only on a longboard.

Been doing some research around the TPI approach, lower back pain etc.

Couple of links for reference if you're interested:

First one is bit of an overview.

http://www.mytpi.com...Lower Back Pain

This one a bit more specific.

http://www.mytpi.com...Lower Back Pain

And, for those so included, this one which is a more holistic. Osteopathic treatment works for me, hence my interest in this one.

Some really good content, exercises, stretches etc on the TPI website. Worth a look IMHO.

I'm going to get the TPI assessment done, which will hopefully find the causes.

I then need to find a way to make sure I do the exercises, stretches, etc. I really am hopeless at that stuff. I'd rather do the sport, activity, like surfing or golf than do the preparation, maintenance or 'gym' type stuff.

Posted this over in the group's your hate thread, but, just adding it here for my future reference....

Reflecting on a few rounds, when wheels fell off, I find I tend to get anxious and or more self conscious when groups are behind me, like I don't want to hold them up.

I of course then proceed to duff the shot, then rush the next trying to make up the time, and usually duff it too. Stupid downward spiral.

So, maybe I need to not give a f.uk, play to my own pace and just focus only on my own game, my next shot.

The TPI assessment will give you a feel for the mobility and stability of various parts of the body. It may be useful to look at the 12 swing characteristics on the myTPI web site before you have the assessment done. The assessment and the characteristics fit in together to create what they call the body-swing connection.

The TPI approach after that is to either find ways to work around limitations or to eliminate limitations or both with an eye to the 12 swing characteristics. There are people with higher level qualifications who will assist with more advanced golf issues. There are also medical and fitness professionals who fit under the TPI system for addressing specialist issues. You may well end up with something of a team approach.

In my own case lower back pain was caused by poor hip action. I was amazed how quickly the pain went away with a comparatively minor change in technique. That was a case of picking out swing characteristics to modify with no physical therapy.

On the other hand I have some age related limitations which are probably not going to improve much even with much hard work. The best I can do on those is to work around them.

I hope it goes well.
