Signing your card is a must I reckon in terms of authenticating the score.
I can attest to the fact however, that the scorecards are not always scrutinised too carefully.
At times in the past I have signed my own card and that of my fellow competitors using a variety of names.
I have at times signed them as G. Clooney, A. Einstein, N. Kelly, and my all time favourite ...... Albert Namatjira.
Not once has my signature been questioned by my fellow competitor or indeed, by the officials, which probably goes to show that so long as there is at least some attempt at a chicken scratching, people will accept any card on face value.
Oh, I've also been at an airport coffee place one time and heard the name "Beelzebub" being called out, to come pick up his cappuccino.

Isn't the signature for just in case the scorecard is called into question or if cheating is found then both cop it?

Desperately unlucky.

When I check cards, I just look for two squiggles.
If my marker hasn't signed and isn't handy, I'll sign it for him.

I've seen scorecards that have a space for the marker's name as well as signature.
When I check cards, I just look for two squiggles.
If my marker hasn't signed and isn't handy, I'll sign it for him.
Wow Phil, wow, you admit to signing your own card twice?

Mick, one day you might be playing with a bunch of old farts.
Getting them around the course, counting shots for everyone in the group because they can no longer count and picking up the clubs they keep leaving lying around the place is 'par for the course'.
With all that going on, just making sure each card has two squiggles is quite minor.
Also, it's quite usual for me to write up both cards because the other guy can't see well enough to write in the scores and I want to ensure that at least mine is legible.
