CB...I understand what you're trying to say...I don't think you understand what I'm asking.

I don't care what particular clubs do, what local rules or indexes are...I'm after an opinion as to how people feel they should be allocated...not necessarily how they are allocated.

Luckily nothing important is won or decided by handicap matchplay.

OK easy answer. I like the allocation using two indexes the way they are now, as they are both designed for a specific outcome.

Match play Index is designed for match play.

reason is it distributes strokes fairly and evenly through match where you are playing against one opponent with handicap difference on same course under conditions of day. The focus is on beating opponents net score on each hole regardless of par of hole or net par of course or score have on the day.

stroke index is designed for stroke play or stableford events..

reason:

stroke play index  player(s) play against the difficulty of holes on the course, so challenge is to beat hole index first then course and then score of other players in competition.

to run a match play using stroke index doesnt work in the same way as running a stableford event using match play index wouldnt work.

Not long after I started to play golf at Royal Coona I noticed that the match play index appeared to be a bit scrambled to say the least but as I was knew kept quiet about it...
A few years later the issue was raised again and after looking into it our match play index was a homegrown version...
When the cards were due for a reprint it was decided to adopt the standard version and in doing so ruffled a few feathers..

Why...

Because of the questions raised about par 3's and where shots are given or not... for example
Front nine the two par 3's are holes 4 and 8.... handicap index of 16 and 8.... match play index of 3 and 1.... 145 and 190 in length.... for a low handicapper they have to work hard to beat a high marker on those holes....
In saying that our 3rd hole a lazy 430 in length par 4.... rated 1... match play index of 12....

At the end of the day it equals itself out surprisingly well and as to if you got a shot, gave a shot or played the Par 3 holes of the stick...

Hopefully that makes sense golden one
