There is a fair bit of discussion recently on the golf coverage about the current top 3 in the world golf rankings and how they have separated themselves from the rest of the field. All the discussion is about Spieth, McIlroy and Day.

However, is it just me, but does anyone else think that at his best Rory is still a cut above everyone else?

While without doubt, Jordan's season last year was unbelievable, almost Tiger-like dominant, and you can't fluke that kind of season in the majors - 2 x 1st, 2nd and 3rd! But i see see him as far and away the best putter in the world, not the best golfer. His swing is a little quirky, he's got that little chicken wing and he's not that long but he just holes everything he looks at. I can envision Spieth having some periods in his career where he struggles if his putting goes quiet with that swing (that's not to say his swing is terrible by any means).

Jason Day hits it a country mile and is quite accurate. He had a breakthrough season last year, especially late in the season but he currently only has one major. I don't think he has been anywhere near as consistent enough over a long period of time to be in the same discussion as the other two (and I say this as a proud Aussie!).

Rory though, to me, is the full package. He has the purest swing, the most majors, the length to dominate and the aura/reputation to intimidate his competitors. To me, Rory's best is better than the others by a fair distance and, while it is all hearsay, maybe we wouldn't even be having this 'big 3' discussion had he not missed the majority of last season with injury.

Thoughts?

I look beyond their game as to how they perform.
I see Spieth's ,Day's and Mcilroys lifestyle on tv and make my performance expectations from that.

Rory lives a bit larger than the other two, Jason has a new young family as a distraction, we all know What happened to Rorys game when a bit of skirt was involved.

On their day, yeah,I reckon Rory would nip it, I reckon Spieth's consistency is unparalleled.

And for me , a two horse race.

Spieth and Mcilroy.

Number 1 is generally the best in a top 3.

I think you are someone who rates the long game higher than the short game BC - you say there will be times when Jordan struggles because his putting is off but we have all seen Rory's long and short game struggle at times so the same argument applies to him and his strengths.

I think Jordan's short game all around is a step above so he can get away with his long game not being such a strength. Saying that though he still hits it good distance and his accuracy and consistency is very good.

The commentators mentioned how Rory could easily have been 5 shots better if his putting had have been on, but they also said that until the last day Jordan didn't seem to hole anything either and he was still top 5 as well.

I agree with you that when Rory hits a hot streak his enormous length means he can pick up shots very quickly. But he is streaky across his game from tee to green. But if he can take an extra step up in his consistency he could go full-Tiger!

Jason Day will be number 1 by the end of the year he has what Rory has in the bag the length and he can putt like Speith and he's broke through for his first major. He has by far the best swing out of the 3. Rory gets a bit dippy like tiger but you have a look how steady days head is. And he is a QUEENSLANDER

Spieth and Day putt the spots off it.

Rory just flushes it, different sound and flight. He can hit shots the other 2 can't.
When his putter is on, he has shown in the past the rest of them are playing for second.

All 3 are great and we are going to have some fun watching them battle it out.

Ricky showed this week how much he has improved and knows how to win now, so we could have a Top 4.

It all depends on who brings their absolute 'A' game.

All things considered, if all three were at their best, then Jordan likely bests the other two just because his putting is so good. In fact, his short game overall is freakish.

Yes, Rory and Jason are very long, but Jordan is not that far behind them. Perhaps one iron the difference in what they would hitting into greens. Rory possible shades the other two with his iron play, but it's close.

One thing I am certain about is we are in for a cracker of a golf watching year, and there are a plethora of other great young players in the mix as well. It's going to be a great year!

So far in 2016

Rory is almost 30y longer off the tee - 283 bs 311

Driving accuracy is almost a dead heat with Jordan less than a % ahead - both 60%

Jordan is slightly in front on the strokes gained tee to green - 2.39 vs 2.38

But Jordan is 3 shots better putting - 1.9 vs minus 1.1

It's hard to evaluate all three when bias reals its nasty head. I want Jason to win above all else. Jordan has the best game within 100m of the pin, whilst Jason is probably a better allrounder than Rory (Rory is the best streak player). When all three are hot with the putter they are all capable of shooting very low and blowing fields apart.

The only time we will really see them head to head is at the Majors when all three will have their games tested to the maximum on difficult layouts. The Masters is probably the one Major that doesn't promote this sort of test. Down the stretch at the U.S. Open and Open Championships and PGA is when we will really see who's game has the element of superiority.

Like all Australian Golf fans, I'm hoping that we see all three plus Stenson at the World Cup. Who knows, they may all back up the following week for the Aus Open, which I've been informed is soon to make some very big announcements.

I'm going out on a limb and say Jason day is probably the best of the "big 3" I think that when he's at his peak, all of his game is far superior to the others. The only thing that let's him down is his vertigo and other mental breakdowns. He could have easily won the US Open and the British open.

Maybe spieths mental game is stronger but let's see how he goes with all that media pressure.
