There is a fair bit of discussion recently on the golf coverage about the current top 3 in the world golf rankings and how they have separated themselves from the rest of the field. All the discussion is about Spieth, McIlroy and Day.
However, is it just me, but does anyone else think that at his best Rory is still a cut above everyone else?
While without doubt, Jordan's season last year was unbelievable, almost Tiger-like dominant, and you can't fluke that kind of season in the majors - 2 x 1st, 2nd and 3rd! But i see see him as far and away the best putter in the world, not the best golfer. His swing is a little quirky, he's got that little chicken wing and he's not that long but he just holes everything he looks at. I can envision Spieth having some periods in his career where he struggles if his putting goes quiet with that swing (that's not to say his swing is terrible by any means).
Jason Day hits it a country mile and is quite accurate. He had a breakthrough season last year, especially late in the season but he currently only has one major. I don't think he has been anywhere near as consistent enough over a long period of time to be in the same discussion as the other two (and I say this as a proud Aussie!).
Rory though, to me, is the full package. He has the purest swing, the most majors, the length to dominate and the aura/reputation to intimidate his competitors. To me, Rory's best is better than the others by a fair distance and, while it is all hearsay, maybe we wouldn't even be having this 'big 3' discussion had he not missed the majority of last season with injury.
Thoughts?
