So had a couple of weeks without golf after too much stuff going on off the course.   And one of those weeks I decided just to give it a break cause I couldn't face schlepping to the course and having another poor round.  After a little break though I felt more energised and ready to begin my limited preparation for Nats.

Stableford on Saturday and without being overly satisfied with the game, came away with 32 points which was enough to replace the flag that was falling out, stopping the handicap from slipping any further just now.

If anything I was ruing missed chances - I couldn't get the pace of the greens for most of the day so I was leaving just about everything short.  Cost me a sand save from my only bunker shot of the day.  Very pleased with my work in bunkers at the moment - nice to have some confidence in that area.

Only had one real brain fade of a hole. Got caught on the wrong side of a dog leg and was far too cute with my shot out where I elected to try and fly a tree on the corner rather than play safe to the point of the turn.  Hit the tree, further into the crap, chunked it through the trees, and eventually left the putt for a one-pointer short.

New driver technique has been going well - I still have a fade, but the slice is (mainly) gone and I am getting some nice distance when I manage to hit it well.  Will go back for a refresher with the coach (but only after nationals).  Would still like to think about getting a new driver/irons but might leave that till the New Year.

The plan for Nationals has changed a bit - was going to be a longer holiday for Mr Deege and I around the event, but I am now just coming up for Nats and a day or two after to recover.  Should be a good time.

My final pre-Nats hit out and we had par today.  I was warming up on the range and was hitting it pretty well, and thought to myself "there goes the game", but amazingly enough it carried through into the round.  Started out par par (including a rare GIR on the first) and I started to get carried away.  Ended up with 4 pars on the front nine (1, 2, 6, 9) with one wipe for +3 at the turn.  Of course at that moment I realised I could wipe the back nine and still turn in 30 points so the wheels fell off a bit - two wipes in a row followed by a couple of settling halves and one more wipe had me back to square for the day.  Was just trying to hold things together and hope to make up some ground on the last two par 5s which are reachable for me.  On the first one hit one of the drives of the day, followed by a cracking 5 wood which left me only about 50m to the flag.  Still nearly stuffed it after pushing my approach wide, but managed to save par.  On the next (my last real par opportunity) I hit a good drive but on the wrong side of the dogleg, pushed a nice approach around the corner and left me a 7 iron in.  Turns out I should have taken 6 iron, cause I couldn't get it down in two from 30 odd feet, so my first 3 putt for the day left me with a disappointing half.

Hit an okay drive on the last which left me a long way in.  The conservative play is to lay up short of bunkers, given it is not really reachable for me, but if you manage to thread the needle around the fairway bunker on a right to left sloping fairway, you leave yourself a much easier pitch/chip in.  At that point the worst I could score was 35 points, so took the nuclear option.  Hopped over the edge of the fairway bunker which had me whooping for joy.  It was only as I got closer to the green that I realised the ball had kept running up to the green and settled 5 feet from the hole.  So a quick run up to apologise to the people I hit up on while they were still on the green then back to miss my birdie putt but leave a tap in for par and a total of +2 for the day.

Felt like I only hit a handful of fairways all day, but drove well - was generally a metre or so off and good distance.  One sand shot which was poor and led to a wipe.  Putting pretty good - and plenty more that didn't miss by much.

All in all a very pleasing day, right up until I put my card in and found myself coming fourth (with only a couple of groups of ladies in the clubhouse).  Turns out the winner had +6!  She is not a sandbagger so must have had a day out.  Tomorrow is for sorting out clubs and then off to the races.

Well quick rundown on the Nats games so far:

Sanctuary Cove: the Pines

Felt I was hitting the ball pretty well.  Like many I struggled with the slow greens and couldn't get the ball to the hole.  Driver was not behaving as well as I would have liked, apart from that all a blur.  After mocking someone for losing 4 balls on one of the first days, I lost 6 balls.  In light of that my 25 points was a revelation.

RACV The Pines

This was a real slog.  Compulsory carts on cart paths only meant a lot of disjointed walking across fairways with 5 clubs and finding you didn't have the one that you needed when you got there.  Hit a couple of nice shots into some of the par 3s that they shortened considerably for me.  Was close to picking back up to a reasonable score with a couple of holes to go, but just ran out of steam in the end with 27 points.

Lakelands

So far the course that I enjoyed the most.  Was pretty accessible from most tees.  Driver was working well most of the day with only one bad shot right (which I managed to save a par from).  Towards the end of the round began trying to hard to keep it straight and ending up with a couple of real pulls.  If I had just been able to trust myself to swing freely, they probably would have been fine.  Very humid day and as a result the ball wasn't flying as far as I expected - nearly a two club difference on some holes.  But I thought there were a lot of interesting and pretty holes.  Managed to hold it together pretty well to come home with 32 points which I was reasonably happy with.

On to Arundel Hills tomorrow then a few days in Byron to relax before heading back to work.
