So a course like St Andrews Beach doesn't count as a links course?

Cape Shank, Portsea are closer to links courses than St AB.

Few years ago when I played Grange in Adelaide it played like a links course.
About the end of February, bone dry, lots of run on the fairways and greens and pretty breezy.
Played the East course and on about the 5th smoked a drive down the middle, landed about 240m, ran about another 50 through the dog leg into the bushes, gone forever.
After that hit the 4 iron a lot, allowed a club bounce into the greens and putted from off the green wherever I could...great fun.
Not technically a links course but pretty similar nonetheless

The original definition of a "Links" course, was one in the area between the sea & usable land. It was the link between the 2. So, in Australia, it would typically be like the 4 Tassie greats on King Island & Barnbougle, Barwon Heads, Thirteenth Beach, Port Fairy, Portsea, Torquay, The Sands Torquay, in Vic & Links Lady Bay in SA & Links Kennedy Bay & The Cut in WA.

Hensch, what’s the definition of “usable” land and have you applied it the list you compiled.
To me, all those courses are actually built on usable land. For example, Barnbougle was a potato farm before a golf course

Yeah, I know that the definition has changed over time, I was just giving you the old rundown. You can take what you want from it. Cheers!

So is The Springs

its a generous summation, they cant even grow spuds there.. Rock farm is more accurate

Was it, or was Sattler growing spuds on the usable land and built a golf course on the unusable stuff. Seems to me he is a smart bloke, if the Barnbougle land was arable, he would have used it.

Tried to find out Perry, maybe you are right.
Definitely could have put housing on it or built a resort.
Maybe usable only applies to “arable”.
Maybe Magenta Shores fits that description as well?
Seems the adjacent coastal strip is not really arable
