Hey guys,

I've been living here just over a year now and really started ramping up my golf playing in the last six months.  My golfing buddy from Canada has been over for the last six months and we've been golfing at least once a week, usually more.

I don't know that many other people playing golf so when he leaves next month I'm on the lookout to try and keep playing and rather than just kind of randomly show up at public courses as the 'extra man' would love to join some sort of society / social group and play competitively. I'm in my mid-20's but don't really care about age, just want to play golf!

Just wondering for advice on the best way to do this?  I'm based in the SE (Armadale) and have played more or less all the public courses in the area and a few private ones.  Was looking at the GSM membership just to get handicap up and running, but seeing as it only runs until October not sure if it's worth it and I'm better looking elsewhere?

To get an idea of handicap, I would estimate I play off around 12-15, and looking to get into single figures (aren't we all...).

Any advice will be greatly appreciated, cheers!!

If joining an expensive private club is not in your plan, check out the VGL clubs http://www.vicgolfleague.com.au/ for those in your area (e.g. Brighton, Elsternwick, Lakeside, East Malvern, Wattle Park).  They all operate at public courses but you'll always have someone to play golf with at the regular comp times.  And you'll get a GolfAustralia handicap.

If you're prepared to go a little further, you couldn't do better for a club than Olinda Golf Club (plays at Emerald).

I play down at Sandringham - one of the Victoria Golf League clubs OldBogey refers to.

Think it's about $180 to initially join up, then $90 each year after. It gets you an official handicap and they run Saturday comps.

Thanks for the replies guys.  Sounds like affiliating with a club seems a little better than the GSM option.  Sandringham sounds look a good option as I've been down that direction for the range and it's not far; haven't played it yet so will have to give it a go first.  Bushrangers seems like a pretty good option too.  Handicap is the main thing really, as I'm happy to play different courses, just going to be challenging getting first three cards.

If dplaying different courses is your go have a look at the RACV membership, they will maintain your handicap and you get discounted green fees to lots of private clubs (no Saturdays), most of which will let you play in their comp.

I think it's about $220 a year.

Check out your local RSL. Most have a social golf group who play regularly. Four years ago when I was getting back into the game I joined Frankston RSL social golf group. They often field a forty to fifty strong group, and play a different course on the Peninsula every few weeks.
