Kouta that played for Carlton in the 90's was on Studio10 on Sunday and he admitted to going through a very low period after he retired from competitive sport. He refused to call it depression which he is entitled to, and just allied on his inner strength to get through the best he could.

He now has a business called kouta- fit where he holds sessions that allow people to talk things out and deal with their daily demons. Hats off to him and the others that have to deal with the black dog everyday.

Mental illness is such an important societal issue.  I really applaud the work of Beyond Blue and people like Steven Bowditch who raise awareness about depression.

The only time I bristle in this debate is when I read the (dangerous) uninformed comments of 'natural healing' brigade who like to discredit the medical profession with unsupported assertions and then claim that 'natural' treatment akin to unicorn tears and herbal drops can cure all conditions of the mind.

The reliance on pills to treat depression is because they have proven a link to depression and an alteration in the brain chemistry, It would be good if we felt comfortable to be tested when the first signs started then possibly the home remedies ,ie, drugs may not be taken. I would guess that no one on here with depression had their brain chemistry checked.

I can understand ppl like your friends taking drugs if that was the reason because the general medical profession have no sympathy whatsoever when you claim to be depressed, their remedy is take a pill and go to bed.

If only it were that easy... :(

It's interesting reading some of the commentary surrounding recent events. ....
Those looking through rose tinted glasses thinking they know and understand
And those who have been there....

Sit back read and listen to the commentary regarding Charlotte and see if decipher the difference between those who really have been there and those trying to be newsworthy. ....

It's great to see people sharing their stories and battles with depression.

The more we talk about it the better.

It's so important for people suffering to know they are not alone, that depression doesn't discriminate.

Sometimes drugs are needed short term to get back into life and sometimes they are required full time for some people to be able to function day to day.

And sometimes no drugs are required.

The hardest thing is admitting to yourself that you need help.

How do people suffering with depression cope with golf? I would have thought that our game could be a cause of depression in some people. Being married to a golfer may tip some people over the edge.

Have a read of David Feherty's bio. Suffered depression whilst playing. Alcoholic also. Drank a bottle of scotch daily.

Golf is a distraction away from the black dog. As you know it is a game that can totally absorb your train of thought whether you are playing good or bad, which is welcome relief for those who are stuck in a grey cloud.

There he goes. One of God's own prototypes. A high-powered mutant of some kind never even considered for mass production. Too weird to live, and too rare to die.
