The other thing I forgot to add is the knowing your on a good score and tensing up or trying to score.

I ask my partners not to tell me my score because I do this. I hate it. I have a general Idea of what I am on but if I don't then I cant do it. It has helped and hindered me at the same time.

YES! I am one of the worst at that too haha.

Give a **** - if you care you'll concentrate

Not stupid throwing your club angry caring (yes Goldy I mean you) but wanting to do your best for every shot caring

And a pre shot routine that helps you switch on before each shot

I think this is another problem. I care ... but I don't think I care enough ... well that's until after the hole and then I am dirty on myself. Then it rolls on from there.

Hopefully I can take a better mindset into Saturday!

Be careful with this, as sometimes you can care too much and tense up or be too conservative and give yourself bigger trouble.

The honest answer is to just try and clear the head of any thoughts what so ever. The moment you step to address the ball your head should be empty ( you would think it would be easy for me :)) and not even thinking about swinging. It should be just instinct motion.

That deep breath for me is to empty the mind and step up and hit.

There are 3 stages I reckon.

1 . Assess the shot in front of you. Start doing that as you walk to the ball in the fairway, or get onto the tee, Do all your mental work distance club etc, etc prior to getting into your address position.

2. Hit the ball (Don't think, just do, in accordance with the shot you chose to play)

3. Assess the result, where did it go, if it didn't go where you want it to, check your divot. Work out what you did wrong. Put the club back in the bag ....... switch off ...... and start walking after your ball.

No need to worry about your score, or your points, or whatever, it just doesn't matter and won't effect the outcome of any shots that you've already played.

Repeat from stage 1 once you get near your ball ....... Do this for around 4 hours or so, and then its time for a drink. :)

I find that the ability to switch off is, as Gaz said, just as important as the ability to switch on.  So I have a definite pre-shot routine.  I will choose my shot and club but once my routine starts, that is when I really focus on the shot at hand.  And then I try to just switch off and relax until the next shot.

Otherwise, it is too hard to sustain for 18 holes, and also if you hit a poor shot, it can lead to you stewing over it if you can't switch of.

Secondly, I tend to be a stat person, and one of the stats I like is trying to assign a culprit to errors which cause you to not score two points.  Importantly, it only counts errors which make a difference, so as to not beat yourself up about occasional poor shots which you recover from (cause that is a good skill as well).  My tracking at the moment for example means that I know that most often, the problem that leads me to lose a shot is mishits from the fairway and putting.  So those are the areas that I work on.

Think I took a much better mentality to the course today ... wasn't reflected in the score but I walked off much happier with my attention.

Had a few things not go my way which had a big impact on my score. Had the ball bounce at a right angle three times into a bunker. The final one then nestled in an unraked foot mark (right where they dug their feet in)

Finished with a really nice par where I played very sensibly which was a highlight.

Best thing for me was I was able to walk off knowing it was my short game that let me down, not my head being in the clouds.

Weather hasn't been too kind to us down Geelong way, so just getting a few more hits in now. Couple week break in America stopped a little bit of momentum I was building.

Had a really solid practice round on Monday where I continued to work on tucking my right elbow in during my swing. It's been resulting in a lot longer, more consistent shots both with driver and irons.

I have got comp Saturday which will be my first time using it, so hoping to get a good score and bring this handicap down!

Biggest win of my golfing life on Tuesday.

Went up with a mate and played the Mazda Four Ball at Kingston Heath and ended up coming away with the win and 46 points. Qualified for the finals at Sorrento me The National too.

First time either of us had played the course (loved it) and we just had a great day.

Turned out we won the event on the last hole. After starting on 11 we finished on the par 3 10th. I put it on the green and made the putt for a 2/4, second had 46 pts too so we won on count back.

Few highlights included a birdie for five points on the 1 rated hole - a par four. Nailed driver and then approach shot and drained a long putt.
That was the hole that ignited outer round. Before that we were 7pts thru 4 holes. Then with the five under our belts we went on a run of 3 pointers.

Anyone got any tips on how to handle the final???

Well done....the way you handled the game at Kingston Heath...is how to handle the final. Have lots of 3 pointers and even 4 or 5 pointers. ;-))

Sorrento is a shortish course but tough if is blows hard. Keep it in play and get your handicap out to as high as you can before the final. :-)))

Back to it today, 38 points for second in C grade. Lost 0.2 off the hcap.

Struggling a little bit with slice from driver but the rest of my play in going well at the moment. Feeling like I'm concentrating a lot better and my three putts are slowly getting fewer.
Lots of great golf coming up. 4ball at Barwon Heads on Monday and Vic Open Pro Am on Wednesday :)

Had a blast. It's the second vic open pro am I've played in and twice the guys we've had have been great value.

Was sensational playing with adam and seeing his game up close. Think he was five under through the first six with us which included an eagle on the first. He hits a beautiful ball so it was no shock to see he finished T2.

The VicOpen itself is a marvellous event. Anyone who can get there next year should do so. I went on the thursday morning and it's nuts how close you can get to the players. Basically stood a couple of ms away from Minjee, Allenby and co.

Playing Commonwealth on saturday, Portsea 4ball on Monday then Portarlington Pro Am this time next week. So much golf to come!!!!
