Played on Saturday, with the new iron set, and they are certainly fun to hit.

Get them out of the middle and they feel so smooth, catch em a little thin or turn the clubface in a touch and they can dip or bend like crazy.

Without knowing their hitting distances, it was a bit hit or miss in terms of landing them on track, but for the most part, they were not far away from where I expected them to be.

My scoring suffered slightly on the day by using the irons as I was experimenting with a lot of different shots and swings.

As an example, instead of just using one of my old wedges with a full swing when 100m out, as I normally would, I'd use my 8 iron with a three quarter swing, or I'd try taking a bit off my pitching wedge, just to work out how the clubs would perform.

What I did find out in doing that though, was just how good the Wilson Staff Model irons are when going with a low "half swing" type of a punch shot. The ball flew off the face crisply, and nice and low, they landed pretty much on the number expected.

For flighting shots, and in particular for flighting them low …. you really can't beat a blade style club.

What I did struggle with though during the comp round, was in hitting fades with them.

It seems the fade swing has pretty much gone for now, and when I thought I'd played for a few fades, the ball just flew straight or even continued to draw just a touch.

Its just another thing I need to work on, when I get the chance, as well as just getting used to the irons and how much "work they need" in order to curve the ball sideways through the air.

They are a touch slimmer than my MP68's and MP32's, so there should be less work in terms of swing path vs clubface in order to shape them the same amount.

It will be an interesting few rounds coming up, and I'll continue to use the irons wherever possible (who cares about the score) in order to really dial in as many different shots as I can get out of them.  ;)

Sounds like they're a bit upright and won't let you get them to fade at will, only straight to a draw/hook ?

Worth checking the lies angles with 5, 7 and 9 irons to confirm or deny.

And excellent point there Jon, and yes they are 2 up  … which was the most recent fitting I gave myself a while ago.

The long irons are good at 2 up, (I can move em both ways) but I am thinking I might need to give them a slight progressive tweak downwards as the set through to PW.

That's how my MP68's roll at the moment, from a couple up to somewhere close to standard at the wedge. I figured I'd give them a game or two and really test them out fully, and then go to the workshop if needed …  :)

Which shafts did you get ?

Regardless they get pretty stiff as the clubs get shorter, so won't bend as much. The longer irons have a longer tip section so will bend more until about the 7 or 8 iron !

Jon...
ps: I'm here all week for anymore questions, Gaz :)
