dare I say it again, but a fantastic public course in WA is Araluen. Yes it does suffer from conditioning issues when the weather gets hot but if you get it at the right time ....

Agree with northerner about Wembley too, good but basic but also a very good bar area and practise facilities

Joondalup is still technically public access too

suspect you may see a few private or semi private tracks become completely public this year.  A few are struggling.  This may then in turn put pressure on the crappier public tracks like Whaleback.

Will be interesting year

So it's in good nick now is it?  The OG guys went there this time last year and said it was in really bad condition, they were all lamenting how far it had fallen.  It's a long drive for me so I wouldn't want to go all that way for a dud course!

Not sure about now, I was there last winter and it was good.

Don't go for the conditioning though cause even at the best of times it is only good not great, go for the layout, course design and stunning views

WA people report in!....What is the best public golf course in WA?.....on what merits do you judge a good public golf course to be??......I'm going to go with the safe choice of 'Royal' Wembley.....Some argue this to be the best public golf course in the Southern Hemisphere which is a big call...Discuss PLease.

My Best (Perth);

The Cut

kennedy Bay

Joondalup

Araluen

Meadow springs

Secret Harbour

Glen Iris

Kwinana

Wembley

Collier Park

I rank The Cut in Mandurah up there with Barnbougle. Haven't played Kennedy Bay.

Play Kennedy bay Scotty, it's a ripper, better than the Cut imo. I'll be disappointed is Barnbougle is same level as the Cut, not saying it's not terrificthigh

Played Port Kennedy last week - is in v. good condition = always worth the trip.

Also played the Cut - also in top condition; and Araluen is in v.good condition...although greens on the slower speed.

Joondalup is a cracker! Spend the day there and play all 27.

The Cut is great, but not near Barnies or Lost Farm.

Meadow Springs is pretty good, great condition.

Secret Harbour, take your own rake, as last time I was there management had removed all rakes due to local kids attacking greens with them.

Avoid at all costs: The Sanctuary in Bunbury, very close to the bottom of the list of all courses I have played.

WA has some of the best courses in the country, nearly all of them can be played by non-members if you give them a call beforehand.

The Cut is nowhere near as good as Barnbougle or Lost Farm.

If Araluen truly is in good nick it is a very nice place to play. It never is in good nick though.

Bump.  I'm thinking of making the trip down to Secret Harbour for a PGN comp.  Anyone played there recently, specifically on a Saturday morning?  Older reviews on ISG talk of 6.5 hour rounds which I'd rather avoid if I'm already driving 100km to get there.

Anyone been there recently?
