By 'shot shape' do you mean curvature, or initial starting direction, or the entire ball flight?

Thanks xrman

I think the putting was most annoying about yesterday - felt like I was stroking it well and reading it ok, but I was just off. Had plenty miss by almost nothing and not a single putt drop.

Best was a 5 or 6 footer on 2, my 11th hole, for a bogie. Otherwise nothing outside 3ft.

Such is golf I suppose

My analysis for my long game misses was getting a bit narrow on the back swing. I made the tweak to get my hands moving more upright - simply focussing a bit on some lift, and I think I overdid it at time. Work in progress and overall I did hit a lot of good shots and my pushes were definitely less right - but involved more fade indicating that my path was straighter and I'm happy about that. Just have to find the sweet spot and maintain the width and shallow the swing into the ball while adding more of the up to fight my typical low inside takeaway.

Range on Tuesday to work on that.

What you need is a practice green in the bigbutt.........oh, sorry.....  :P

How does back yard always end up as big butt?

Played Woodford comp today in a between game. Off 11 and finished with 14 back and 21 front 35 points and 12 over 84 off the stick. No wipes.

Started on the back and putted terribly on the admittedly very poor greens. The rest of the course was in the condition expected with the lack of rain, but despite the greens and surrounds being quite green the condition was everything from patchy to sandy and very bumpy. The bunkers were in very good condition.

Had 5 3 putts in the first 6 holes - an up and down par on 14 was the exception. Mostly short but a few past, and didn't drop any of the 3-6 foot 2nd putts.

Otherwise played pretty well but only that 1 up and down meant a 9 over 45 and 14 points.

Better front nine although started with a 3 putt par (same as I did on 10). Run of 2 pointers until I snagged a 4 point birdie on 16 and a 3 point par on 18 (my only 3 pointer). Finished with 3 over 39 for 21 points.

1 birdie 6 pars 9 bogies 2 doubles

4/14 fairways + 2 just off - quite a few pushes but overall I drove it ok. No dropped shots recorded although a top on 15 that left me 200m out in the trees left was a candidate. Had a shot to get close to the green with a hooked 5i punch I topped so gave the shot to that shot.

7 GIR + 5 texas - should have led to a really good score but the putter killed that. Only dropped shot was that 5i punch I topped. Still missed a few greens with wedges and short irons.

3/11 up and downs + 1 other to inside 3 ft I missed the putt - short game was fairly decent, no up and downs from the 3 bunker shots but all were pretty decent. A few LW pitches that I hit ok - 1 for GIR and then birdie - but no LW chips. 7 dropped shots.

38 putts - 4 3 putts then an up and down then a 3 putt then a texas to 3ft missed meant 5 dropped shots from putts in my first 7 holes (the 3 putt on 10 was a par so it didn't count). With the 3 putt on 1 for par it was 5 dropped shots but 7 shots worse than my score should have been.

So more putting mat practice coming up

Dropping a 12.9 so flagged but worse so I went out to 11.0

How far off the green do/will you putt from with any confidence and what is your end leave distance from the hole, 5-10-15 feet average ?

A couple of metres, longer if it's fairway as opposed to rougher

Probably averaging inside 5ft with Texas, ranging from stone dead to 15ft though - more regularly short than long

Could the chip/putt method be a better outcome with 8/6/4/hybrid, and hit the spot/zone, target orientated style ?

Or make more 5' to 10' putts and convert them into par/bogey or better ?

I use the putter from off the green to get up and down a lot, but I'm probably averaging inside 5/7' in for the conversion to par/save bogey or birdie better !

Jon...

ps: the putt back is usually a winner rather than being short and feeling of being let down with the, I've come up short and didn't give it a go senario !

Texas is my most confident choice - today I made 3/5 and 1 was a missed putt from 3ft so it was working ok. Average was 4ft today.

I'm taking gap wedge 50 degree more for chip and runs but often I am stopping faster than I expect - had 2 of them today both on the landing zone and both stopped quite quickly - so need to be a bit more aggressive with those. My aim is to take out the texas wedges where there is a fair amount of rougher grass to get through and carryit with the gap wedge - it's a WIP but improving.

Probably should have taken LW on a chip from over the green on 3 as there was decent grass back there, but still a bit nervy so chose to bump a 5i into the hill and ended up a bit short of the flag

Driver today was
3 pushes into tree line but ok
2 thin, 1 left was fine, 1 right was pretty poor
1 fade just off 240
2 FW 260, 278 (missed one of those in my stats so actually 5 FIR)

The pushes and fades were mostly fine as I was playing for a shot to the right but they were a bit too much - squared things up later in the round and that straightened the ball up.

4 4h tees all FIR except 1 just off
1 3h push into tree line
1 6i fade that clipped a tree (thought it was perfect but the branches came out more than I thought)

Not a bad day off the tee but Woodlands was fairly forgiving

Range tonight and worked out I was taking the club back too narrow - explained the run of thin shots lately

The feel of swinging the whole club seemed to help the chipping (as opposed to feeling the head more) - we will see Sunday at Maroochy River

Short game last game apart from the texas wedges - so 6 holes after 7 GIR and 5 texas

3 LW bunker shots - all were well struck shots
12 was a longer shot so it stopped quickly after landing so was 20ft short
17 was short sided so of course it rolled 18ft past
8 I almost dunked and it rolled out 12ft
No complaints - came out clean just didn't get them down

Had a LW pitch from 55m that I hit well but a bit short into the wind

18 gap wedge chip landed where I wanted but bounced dead and finished 20ft short
3 5i chip from behind up a high steep bank wasn't firm enough and finsihed 15ft short
4 LW chip from hazard was good and as it was my 3rd shot on the par 5 it gave me a GIR
6 gap wedge chip again landed soft and ended 15ft short

Overall not bad - no disasters but no par saves
