Sorry to butt in, but what do you do on the course?

I start by standing being the ball and finding a mark on the line I want to play and then try and align parallel to an imaginary line from that through the ball

I certainly try and keep everything consistent but I mustn't do

I've never analysed whether the target is where I thought it was - my focus is always on did the ball go where I wanted it to

The flip side of target consciousness is how often you hit the ball exactly where you don't want to go. It's the old don't hit it in the lake swing thought which can almost guarantee you will. It may be worth hitting some shots without bothering to line up at all just to see what happens.

There's a solution there somewhere.

I keep my target focus positive

Body just won't cooperate and sent the ball there!

At the range I align myself with the edge of the mat train track style and try and get my feet hips and shoulders aligned to it

First thing I do when I start is to line up where the mat is pointing and that becomes my target for the range session

May I suggest a slightly different way to align yourself without the aid of lines and or alignment sticks.

Something more like the normal and regular routine you would use during play, with enhancement.

Start with the standard reference point in front of the ball, set your club square behind the ball and online to the chosen target.

Then look at your target. Be quite specific with what you focus on, flag, edge of a bunker, tree in the distance or middle of the green. Now, while focusing on the target let your feet settle into their own alignment, driven by your eyes and what they see.

You can then check by placing a club hard behind your heels, backoff and see if your feet are online.

Rinse and repeat on the practise fairway to perfect your alignment. If you have the opportunity, test yourself on different lies to instill the trust. It will amaze you how often you think that you're pointed wrongly, only to be setup perfectly via your eyesight !

Jon...

ps: Happy New Year bigfella.

The setup is a constant battle
Every time I set up for a swing I go through the 30 page checklist but my perception of square tends to deteriorate as I over think and have too much going on in my already overloaded mind and what I think is square is actually closed

Maybe just don’t think about things as much, I’m same, more effort I put into it the worse I play......
