Topic: Golf Talk / When is the weather too bad?? Yes ShortsTuff, the weather is appalling here at the moment. Really glad (in a perverse way) that I can’t play for another couple of weeks. Very wet and windy here (Buderim). Headland will still be playable, but it has been raining for a couple of days. Good to fill all of the dams up. Hope they are getting some of this down in Brisbane in the catchment areas. |

Topic: Golf Equipment / What's Your Brand? Sorry backmarkers23, been away from the forums.. My Taylor Made putter is a Rossa Monza Corsa. Really like it. I really like my Callaway FT5 driver, too. |

Topic: Golf Talk / When is the weather too bad?? The only time I will stop is for lightning. After playing for years in Melb in all weather conditions, I was astounded when I first played up here in Qld – my playing partners were all retired Vics and at the first hint of rain they wanted to go in! |

Topic: Rules of Golf / Matchplay - when to claim? I would have thought that “by tapping down my entire line to see what ‎he said” would constitute DQ for a blatant intentional breach of the rules of golf. I understand your original predicament, because a lot of players are not aware of the situation regarding spike marks. Once he had missed the putt and conceded the hole it gave you a wonderful opportunity to say “Are you aware that you can’t repair spike marks until after you have putted out?”. Might have played with his mind for a hole or two. Also a neutral way to point out the rule to him. |

Topic: Rules of Golf / Hazard posts Never actually knew that they were MOs. Must check my course’s local rules. Very late autumn here on Queensland’s Sunshine Coast, rushing headlong into winter and the weather is very predictable – beautiful sunny days max mid-high 20s cent and nights min mid-high teens. Such superb golf weather. Not surprised that people are sunbathing all over Europe. We were in Skaguay Alaska in May 2006 on a cruise ship and when the sun came out there were sunbakers all over the top deck. Mind you I still had jeans and multiple layers on… |

Topic: Golf Equipment / Good putters? I bought a Taylor Made putter a couple of years back for about $300. I absolutely love it. However, what I should have done was… Go to golf shops and pro shops and try as many putters as possible. At the pro shops you can actually take the putters out onto the practice greens and get a real feel for them, including long putts and possibly uphill/downhill putts. Eventually settle on the one you want. Shop around for the best price either online or thru local/regional outlets. Consider eBay. The most important aspect though, is to try a whole lot of putters – you will know when you find one. It will feel right for you. I would be reluctant to spend money online for a putter that I haven’t tried… |

Topic: Golf Talk / Argh. No golf for 6 weeks So frustrating. Just getting t the stage where I am playing good golf and aiming to get my handicap back down to 12, and I had to have my gall bladder out. No golf for 6 weeks. No cycling or serious pilates for 6 weeks as well. There is a good side – no gardening for 6 weeks. I can start putting in about a fortnight – that gives me a chance to work on a couple of technique issues. I can start chipping in 3-4 weeks if I take it easy. But no body rotation until July. One thing I might look at during this time is to do some hand/finger exercises with a club to strengthen my fingers. Anybody else been in a similar situation? Any advice on things to do so that I don’t totally lose my golf feel? |

Topic: Golf Talk / No-Backswing Swing I have just seen a copy of Golf Magazine in Oct 2007 which describes a swing that doesn’t have a back swing. They called it the No-Backswing Swing. You take a normal stance, and then rotate back to a positon where the left arm is parallel. This is the starting point. To initiate the rest of the swing you “pump” your arms up about a foot and rotate around a bit more, and then swing down through the ball. The claims are that this eliminates “70% of swing errors” and that it can produce higher clubspeed, ball speed, accuracy, distance etc. I have used this technique as a training aid (one of the remedial actions recommended in Leadbetter’s golf analysis software and thought that it might actually work as a golf swing in itself. I would be interested to see what other people thought of this, and whether anybody actually uses it. |

Topic: Golf Equipment / Shoes - Do they make a difference? Oh yes, nostalgia ain’t what it used to be. The area I have found improvement in golf shoes is comfort. I wear soft spikes, and haven’t slipped or lost balance since I stopped wearing spikes a number of years ago. |

Topic: Golf Talk / Got to 1st tee, but... I had a most unpleasant experience on Sat. Turned up for my 11am hit off, filled the sand bucket, practiced putts etc and was really looking forward to the round. When my group was called I headed off to the tee, but where were my playing partners? The started called the following group and called me to the starter’s box. All 3 of my playing partners were “did not show” (they were also “did not phone to let someone know”).Ii hadn’t played with these losers before, and I certainly won’t in the future. There were no spare spots in the field, and I couldn’t wait around to 12.45 to see if I could play in a two-some or five-some. So I went home very pissed off. Our club doesn’t have an existing policy for no-shows, but I think we should! |

Topic: Golf Talk / Masters Coverage read somewhere yesterday that the committee at Augusta had a large say in what footage was sent out. I agree that the coverage is pathetic, but I am also grateful that it is on free to air. Agree also with comments about faldo, but then he can be smug and swmalmie (?) there because he won a couple of times. |

Topic: Golf Equipment / Recommended driver for older beginner Yes, I know that there are a number of cowboys out there who just want to get your money and see the back of you, but there decent club fitters out there, and decent Pros who will work out what club you need and then not get pissed off if you don’t buy it there. The thing that we don’t know is, how fit/flexible is this 60 year old? |

Topic: Golf Equipment / lookin 4 new draw driver Wasn’t going to reply to the knob, but Brett is right. I did try a number of drivers before chosing the FT-5. I tried the TM which was good, the Cleveland which didn’t suit me, the Nike which I didn’t like, the Burner which I hated, and a number of others. After all of that, I found the FT-5 the easiest to hit consistently. My recommendation in another thread is for anyone to hit lots of drivers, get expert/professional help and buy the driver that suits you best. I didn’t realise that only people on a low handicap had wisdom when it comes to golf. |

Topic: Golf Equipment / Recommended driver for older beginner I would suggest going to a professional club fitter to see what type of shaft, loft, lie etc your friend needs based on the actual swing mechanics etc |

Topic: Golf Talk / How did you all play this weekend? I had a good round on Sat – 40 points with 5 1 pointers. 85 off the stick. I came home bogey, double, bogey, double. I felt that I should have scored around 78-79. Handicap will come down from (inflated) 17. Sat was the best round I’ve played since July 2006, which was just before knee surgery. It has taken a while but I finally feel that I am back to playing reasonable golf, and I should be able to get back down to 11-13. Driving was pretty good – a couple of mental images helped my swing. The first is the concept of a plate of glass where the ball is that my head can’t go through until I release it by impact (to stop reverse pivot). The other is to be conscious of lag at the top (thanks to Bruce). Worked wonders. Looking forward to my next comp round. |

Topic: Golf Talk / Melbourne course options? At the risk of hijacking this thread, can someone please tell me what Northern is like. I lived around the corner when I grew up, and often wandered around in the rough (hiding from the golfers). Thinking of having a round in May, back to memory lane. |

Topic: Golf Equipment / Whats a good wedge? I love my Callaway 588s. I have 4: 48, 52, 56 & 60. The wedge that suits you will depend on how much bounce you need (is your course clay, sand, soft, hard etc). Try a lot of different wedges if you can. Demo days are really good. Your local pro shop should have some demo or second hand wedges for you t otry. Find a brand and model that feels good and that you feel comfortable and confident with. Then workout how many wedges you need and get the lofts adjusted accordingly. |
