Topic: Sports Talk / Brownlow Betting

Jeffrey,

Paul Chapman never received another vote after he and Ablett bitched about Goldspink swearing at them late in the year. Could this be the new 'Dieselgate' in years to come . . .? If Chapman were to pursue this, it could be the Brownlow's equivalent to 7th protesting against 4th in a trots race at Charlton. Hang on to those tickets Jeffrey!

Topic: The Lounge / Brownlow Thread - 2006

Billy 'The Croc' from Global Sportsbet on SEN tonight had the right mail. Claimed Judd would lead after 8 Rounds, before Goodes finished all over the top of them. Was trying desperately hard to not give too much away but reading between the lines it seemed he knew exactly who was getting votes when.

I wonder how far before the count, the bookies (corporate or otherwise) get their mail. It certainly is in their best interests to circulate the hoax e-mails we all receive in the week prior. The dopey buggers who got sucked in backed Goodwin to win $1000s.

Topic: Sports Talk / Baseball Season Coming Soon!

So the World Series is upon us, Boston leading series 2-0.

The American League playoff series was ace, the most enjoyable I have seen. How did the Yankees go from requiring three outs with a two run lead to sweep the series to losing in seven??? Either way those last two games at Fenway Park, despite being marathons, had everything.

Since the American League has had it all over the National League in recent years, it is looking particularly good for the Red Sox and not so good for the curse.

Looking forward to the next couple of games in St Louis. I'll be interested to see how having to actually field affects the batting of Ortiz. Apparently he will be taking over 1st base.

Topic: Sports Talk / Brett Lee

Peanuts

,

In my view, despite his pace, Brett Lee doesn't really seem to intimidate anyone other than tailenders or playing against minnow countries. When he is fired up and bowling short batsmen seem to have no problem hitting him to all parts. I can't think of too many he has had hopping around.

I'm interested in your opinion as to why a bloke like Merv Hughes, who seemed to bowl nowhere near as quickly as Lee, could really get the ball to 'spit' off a good length whereas Lee really has to dig it in short to have it up around a blokes ears.

Hughes could intimidate blokes and get them out with some prolonged 'chin' music, whereas a lot of Lee's wickets come from either that searing yorker he bowls so well or genuine outside edges with balls that move away.

As a result and as batsmen have got more and more used to his bowling, Lee has become less and less effective (granted injuries have not helped). Brett Lee doesn't deserve to be in our current test team as he doesn't offer anything better than we have already got. In fact, now that Steve Waugh is no longer around to push his case, the road ahead for Lee may continue to get tougher.

I'm surprised Butchy hasn't chipped in with his take on this latest development in The Life of Badds! Seems like he and BobToski share a similar opinion. biggrin.gif

What made Keith Miller so special is that he was everything that every young boy in Australia dreams of becoming.

A brilliant batsmen and bowler for Australia, played footy at the top level, National hero through his deeds as a fighter pilot in WWII, very popular and from what I have read . . . all the girls loved him

Topic: Sports Talk / India v Australia - 1st Test

fast bowlers generally don't know the rules, that's why as skippers we used to tell them to appeal if they hit the pads.

Peanuts

,

Are you saying I should toss out my application to become an umpire? biggrin.gif

In my view, asking a team to follow-on is the same as giving them a written invitation back into the game. There is absolutely no benefit to be gained from it unless you are running out of time in the match.

We saw the perfect example of it in the Sydney test last summer. India made a massive 1st innings total and we fell just short of the follow-on. There was much speculation about what Ganguly should do but the bottom line was our only chance to win the match was to hope they made us follow-on. Unfortunately Ganguly had too many brains for that and batted again leaving us with no option but to battle for a draw.

but I did bowl a bit too and I reckon I got a couple I shouldn't have...

Yep, typical of a batsman.

Everyone knows fast bowlers only appeal when we think the batsman is out.

I'll second Tithers comments, Mau.

I'm guilty of coming into this forum without logging on way too often therefore without posting anything and not making a contribution.

The reason I can cruise in here a few times a day and always have something new to read? You and everyone else who posts frequently.

If there were more of me and less of you (and say the other 1000+ posters) this forum would be dead.

Cheers guys! biggrin.gif

Yeah but at least two of those Gilly failures were mighty dodgy LBWs. That was one of the last series a home umpire...

Clarke's form against spin is what's got him there. Katich is the unlucky one as he is a more established Number 3 and he made 125 and 77no last time out against these blokes...

Peanuts,

I think you'll find Katich is in the team and wll bat number 3. Clarke comes in to replace Ponting and will slot into Katich's number 6 position.

Just a guess mate, but I reckon you were a batsmen through your grade career, all you blokes are the same when it comes to LBW's. According to batsmen, all LBW's are dodgy . . .

Nothing personal but yet another reason why I have an intense dislike for all batsmen. Sure, it's always somebody else's fault.

Michael Clarke finally set to make his debut in another ground breaking decision from the selectors to pick a New South Welshman instead of a Victorian . No word yet (that I have seen or heard) on our bowling attack.

Coverage on Foxtel starts tomorrow afternoon I believe at 3pm (or is it 2pm :? ) . . . can't wait. If it's anywhere near as good as our last series over their, despite the wrong result :x , I'll be happy.

The pitch clearly looks to be doctored, apparently to suit their spin bowling attack. It seems the Indians have forgotten we have the greatest leg spinner perhaps of all time in our team, although blokes like Gilly might be having nightmares after his finish to our last tour there. For memory he scored 0 0 1 1 in his last four innings.

Topic: Sports Talk / Jonathan Brown

Brown relies heavily on the fact that his modern opponents aren't expecting that type of behaviour. In the old days and without the element of surprise, he'd get killed out there

I wonder how many blokes he has to punch in the head before his opponents do start to expect that type of behaviour! biggrin.gif

I'm not old enough to remember games from a few decades ago but all the old replays seem to suggest that quite a few of the 'cheap shots' in those days did come from a player coming from behind an unsuspecting victim.

Is it too meek to suggest Brown is about two generations after his time? Blokes would get away with that sort of thing all the time back in the 1970's.

Topic: Sports Talk / AFL GRANDFINAL DAY

I now have a new found respect for anyone who has had to endure sitting through a grand final watching their team lose. Yes, Collingwood supporters I mean you.

The last 20 minutes of the game on Saturday were the worst 20 minutes of football I have ever had to endure and that includes every Fitzroy game during the 1995/96 seasons.

I sulked like a baby for a good half an hour after the match before the reality that we had won the last three flags and they had only won one set in and let's not forget, there is always next year. I'm proud to say I sat right through the entire last quarter although it was tempting to leave before the end.

As a committed Fitzroy supporter (I hardly missed a game right until the evil end) who had never experienced the thrill of winning a flag I never had enjoyed a football game so much as when we won in 2001. Conversely I've never left a game as disappointed as I was after getting rolled on Saturday.

Topic: Your Favourite Golf Courses / My next golf trip

Fishhead,

If you are staying on the Monington Peninsula and would like to play any of the courses on the Bellarine Peninsula (Thirteenth Beach, etc) there is a ferry service which leaves Sorrento (on the hour, I believe) and takes you to Queenscliffe, which isn't far from Thirteenth Beach.

It could save you what would normally be a two and a half hour trip around the bay, whereas the ferry only takes about 30 minutes or so (I think).

Topic: Sports Talk / ICC Champions Trophy

Another ho-hum one day tournament in my opinion.

By the same token I'm really looking forward to tonight's game when we take on the Poms, chock full of confidence after series wins against hacks.

It has been surprising to see the amount of trash talking coming from Ricky Ponting since he took over the Captaincy. Especially when it has come to the Poms. Somebody must have forgotten to tell Ricky when he took over the Captaincy that the Australian Cricket Captain isn't actually supposed to say anything. Yeah sure talk a lot but don't actually say anything.

I wouldn't be surprised to see the Aussies have their pants pulled down tonight, it is true, most of them have poor histories against us but I'm not sure that we have ever seemed so publicly arrogant and therefore IMO vulnerable.

Greg Anderson. In the Top 5 famous mullets of all time, I reckon.

Butchy,

Credit where it's due, mate. You hand out some of the most vitriolic sprays that I have had the pleasure of reading. While I don't agree with you one little bit in this instance, that was right up there with some words of advice you had for Badds a few months ago.

[quote="butchy"]

i think it is great to see someone like capriati, who has been through more than anyone could possibly know get something go her way. fine, they were bad calls, but there are a few in every match.

Can't agree with your comment about Capriati here. I don't think anyone forced her into a life of drugs as a teenager. She's very lucky that she has a talent which allowed her to pick herself out of the gutter and not end up as a prostitute or in jail trying to pay for her habit. Most young girls that choose the path she took as a kid aren't so lucky. I haven't got any time for her at all. In fact Capriati would have known better than anyone that those balls that were called out were in. She's the closest one to the ball including the central chair umpire and linespeople and was quite happy to knowingly cheat her way into a grand slam semi final.

I agree that eveyone gets a bad call every now and then but three bad calls in the final set, including two shockers when Capriati was serving for the match seems like more than coincidence to me. Serena had every right to go off her nut.

I love Serena Williams.

She's different from the other women players and looks like she is actually enjoying herself out there. It's difficult to capture in words but there is a charisma about her. And all of that without me even having to mention how attractive she looks. Best looker on the circuit in my opinion.

The she plays a white woman in the quarter finals of the US Open the other night. There were at least three blatantly bad line calls against her. Are they hiring blind linespeople and officials now? Or is there a more sinister reason behind this bias against Serena?

Why does everyone seem to dislike her so much? Is it because she and her sister have been so succesful? Crowds in the US have never really warmed to her, to the point of accusing the Williams' sisters of not trying against each other to allow one or the other to win in the final. That's ridiculous.

Now this year she is cheated out of the tournament against a white American player. Without accusing anyone, I think the question now needs to be asked, does racism exist in tennis?

Topic: Sports Talk / This season's Under-achievers

Just read this thread from start to finish.

Admirable performance from VJ Stinks. Hopelessly outnumbered by Carlton supporters, put up a good argument. I thought the call on the '95 season was a rippa comeback, great way to get a bite from Blues supporters.

This Season's Underachivers . . . . and perennial winners of the award . . . . Western Bulldogs.
