St Andrews,

Crenshaw played the Victorian Open at Metropolitan in 1980 and the World Cup a Royal Melbourne in 1988.
He played a PGA at Royal Melbourne as well but I have no memory of the year.

1982 at Royal Melbourne in the PGA. I watched him play the second round he was 8 under after 7 holes, I think he finished 2nd or 3rd in the end:

Is Bill Coore doing this on his own or with Crenshaw, does it matter if Crenshaw isn't involved??

I walked the lost farm site (BD's new course) a few years back. In the right designers hands it can easily be the best course in Australia. The dunes are twice the size at Barnbougle, but maybe not as much of an oportunity to route the course along the bay as with Barnbougle. Man this is getting exciting... tongue.gif

Interestingly if you tally the votes of all the panelists they are all pretty much in order apart from a couple of oddities. St Andrews Beach should be in position 15 as Commonwealth has more total votes (and so do the others behind St ab) and The Dunes should not even be in the top 20 as Woodlands, Peninsula, and National Old have more total votes than it. unsure.gif

QUOTE: AndyA @ Dec 8 2005, 05:57 AM

JJJ, I don't have a problem with the architects rating their own courses, so long as the vested interests are listed in the magazine.  Perhaps they should devote a page at the end of the article to a list of club memberships  as well:

eg. Mollica, Oliver and Perrett - The National; Clayton and Perrett - Metropolitan; Berg - Commonwealth; Langford-Jones - Kingston Heath; Harrison - The Australian.

They should also mention that Ramsay has or had a pecuniary interest in Laguna Whitsundays, and presumably has one at Club Pelican, which would explain its extraordinarily high ranking on his list.

You can understand them rating thier courses highly, but what the four of them did with Barnbougle makes them look very ordinary. Obviously as designers of new courses they don't want Barnbougle to be rated highly as it makes them look bad. I am sure they would not have known their lists would be printed as they should be embarrassed as a group.

The others rated Barnbougle 2-2-2-2-3-6 wheras the four architects rated Barnbougle 7-8-11-13 They could not have made themselves look any more unprofessional if they tried. mad.gif

QUOTE: Jerry Springer @ Dec 8 2005, 05:32 AM

Royal Canberra, I played there last year and thought it made a fair comparison to Yarra Bend or Caloundra!  It has no place in the top 50.

The other one that has me a little mystified is Barnbougle, are we all that desperate to love a Doak course?  It has four brilliant holes (3,4,15,17), 6 good ones, 6 just ok, and 2 stinkers in 5 & 16.  I just can't see that NSW, KH, Metro, Victoria, National old  and probably a few others shouldn't be above it.  I has great views and is spectacular which I must admit is something I really like, but I can't help but feel it is overrated by the panellists.

The speccy views have nothing to do with why the gold label of rankings have BD in the top 50 in the world after not even being open for a year, and why the US Golf Digest had it number 6 in Australia 4 months after it opened. It has hole after hole of top notch quality. 6 good, 6 just OK, and 2 stinkers??? Any golf course will have it's detractors but Barnbougle has had pretty much unanimous predictions that it will be in the top 2 in Australia within a few years, and it's not a surprise that 4 of the raters had it at number 2.

Topic: Golf Talk / Does 'flight' have another meaning in golf?

Flight simply refers to each group. Instead of saying you are in the second group or 4th group of the day, you are in the 2 flight or 4th flight. Has nothing at all to do with grades. Used mainly in Asia. smile.gif

Anyone can teach anywhere in the world if you can do it effectively.  Getting a job teaching in Oz without PGA membership is harder though far from impossible.  Gerry Hogan and myself have done fine without it though.  More than one way to skin a cat:)

Cool... smile.gif

I was under the impression that you had to be a PGA member to teach golf in Australia. I know in the US you don't, but thought it was different here.

Hardly an independent source you're quoting there MattM. rolleyes.gif
Has it been open for a year?

Mike Kieser wasn't quoting how good the place is or anything he was talking about how it has gone in it's first 8 months, and he is one of only a few that really knows how it has done. I have heard from another source closely involved that BD has exceeded thier expectations by a country mile. Obviously over it's first winter it is bound to be quiet.

I can just see it now...Pro Shop well stocked with beanies laugh.gif

Seriously though, I never even contemplated going to Tassie in the winter - probably got this thing in my head that it would be a bit Antarctic like.

Same here DJ. Went down last winter though and that changed my mind, really is nice that time of the year and as Brummer said you still get sunburnt. blink.gif

Topic: Your Favourite Golf Courses / Is Barnbougle Set Up Too Tough.....

QUOTE: dgstones @ Mar 15 2005, 10:28 PM

Spooky, I did comment about some prices and the paths on another thread but I'm happy to answer you on this one.

Continental Breakfast $12-00.
Stubby of Boags Premium $6-00.
Squash & Bitters $5-00.

IMO these prices are a touch on the steep side.

Dangerous paths -2,3,4,7,8,10,13,16. Bear in mind me and my father were using motorised carts which were quite heavy. I'm sure with some tweaking these paths can be improved.

DG they do seem a bit more than your average club prices. I know I drink stubbies, which at most places are $4.50 to $5 on average. But I would not mind paying an extra $3 or so if I had my regular 3 after a game, considering the view from inside and outside the clubhouse.

Your paying a small percentage extra for an experience that is 100% better than any other clubhouse experience. wink.gif

Latest price on the yardage book that was paid by my father was $13-50.

Dg, you say the breakfast were too expensive as well as drinks. How much were they?

Also which paths do you think were dangerous? The path from the top of 3 and 16 are the only ones I can think of, are they the ones you were thinking of?

It's actually a pretty good public course. The front nine especialy is quite good quality with some testing holes. The back nine is a bit micky mouse, but all in all it is one of the better metro public tracks in Melb...

Topic: Your Favourite Golf Courses / Some thoughts about Barnbougle

I agree MM, the 8 hole would be rediculous with an undulating green. Left side off the tee gives a much better approach, whether you finish on top of the hill, or for the big hitters a much shorter approach via a sling down the slope.

I was thinking however that the dune on the right of the green around 50 meters short of the green should be removed (not the main one short of the green) This would allow a bit more of a lay up area, whereas at the moment if you can't go for the green you have to lay up 100 meters short. In my opinion this would make it a much better hole...

Spooky,

Photographs tell you a lot about the setting and bugger all about the golf course.  As an example, if you look at photo's of the Ocean Course at the National it looks fantastic, yet playing it is very different.

JJ

True but you have to admit these pics are a big step above any pics on show of the ocean course etc. All this place is missing is some marram grass, wich it looks like they need on the 18th to stabilize the dunes instead of tree branches.. rolleyes.gif

QUOTE: dgstones @ Feb 25 2005, 10:27 PM

JJJ,

what do you think about the grassy mound in the middle of the 8th fairway at BD ?

I'm heading back to Barny on March 8 & 9 and not looking forward to that tee shot on hole 8 purely for the reason that I think it to be extemely unfair. I know it is something different from the normal but IMO it's a very tough par 4 even down wind.

I love the course except for that tee shot.

dg

The tee shot is easy it's the second that is hard...
