Topic: Ask Golf Guru - Golf Instruction / Maximise Your Woods From The Fairway

Interesting read, thank you ISG.

I’m currently hunting for a 3-wood for my bag, and will definitely be looking for a club that produces a low ball flight, as my swing currently produces some shots so high the ball has ice on it on the way down…

Does anyone have any suggestions on 3-woods that have a lower trajectory?

Thanks in advance,

Bunny.

Topic: Golf Equipment / skins for golf

I’m always the guy wearing a floppy-brimmed hat amongst a group of guys wearing baseball-caps. My old man’s had one removed from his nose and I have skin like him, so I’m always careful.

The worst case I ever saw was when I played at Yarrawonga, there was a fella there in his 60s or so, looked like he’d been playing his whole life, he had bandages all over his arms and a big one across his nose. He looked like he’d had at least half a dozen cut out, and his skin was just…. ugh. That’s Australia for you I guess, highest skin cancer rate in the world.

Topic: Golf Equipment / skins for golf

I’ve got a long-sleeved Nike one, they normally run around $80-90, I got mine through a rep for $20. I went out and played a couple of times in 35+ days, and it takes a while to get used to but I love it. You warm up a bit but as soon as a breeze hits you the venting mesh cools you down so much, it feels great.

Word of warning though if you get a white one, wear white gloves, cos on one of the superhot days, my sweat made my black glove leak onto the sleeve, leaving a gross-looking mark I had to wash out a couple of times.

Just to the right of the target line most of the time, but not by very much I think.

Topic: Ask Golf Guru - Golf Instruction / Slice turned to push

I’ve tried correcting a nasty banana slice I hit sometimes by trying to use a FLW and making sure my downswing comes from the inside, but I have produced more of a push shot as a result. I have a problem with completing a full follow-through on my swing, and I’m pretty sure it’s the cause.

Can anyone offer any advice on either correcting the push, or working on a full follow-through?

Topic: Golf Equipment / Commodities and USD start to bite

Agreed, we’ll be feeling the inflation everywhere except our salaries, which are experiencing downward inflationary pressure, from what I’ve seen.
This makes the effect all the more noticeable for the average punter, when they’re told their rent is going up by $20, their petrol expenses are going up, and their weekly paycheck isn’t changing at all.
My friend also runs a sportsgoods store that imports certain lines direct from the US and said prices are going up on the 2009 stock he’s ordering now. I think we’ll definitely see golf prices going up, and more people purchasing overseas if the US$ continues dropping in value.

Topic: Ask Golf Guru - Golf Instruction / Let us all know please (2)

Impressive statistics indeed Dart, well done :)

I really do enjoy heading out and trying out the recommendations I get from ISG… as has been stated by previous posters, misinformation abounds with coaches etc. The most telling example I’ve had of that thus far has been 9 out of 10 pro’s telling me I’d need 2 degrees of upright on my clubs, and only 1 telling me 2 degrees flat. You can guess which one was correct.

I just picked up Hank Haney’s ‘The Only Golf Lesson You’ll Ever Need’, and I tell ya, it’s a pretty big book for just one lesson. That said, the section on bunker play was great for me, and tonight I’m going to find out if the ‘slice repair’ section works. I’ll keep my eye out for anything with Homer Kelley on it though…

Topic: Golf Talk / How Many Have Had Lessons

I played on Friday with a guy that hadn’t played in 8 years or so, and he was carving perfect divots, and sending his 5-iron 180m+ in a straight line every time… If you’ve got that freakish sort of natural ability, and you don’t have serious goals about reducing your handicap, then you don’t have to bother with lessons…

IF, on the other hand, you can’t do things like that, and DO have a goal of improving your h/c, go spend the money… I’m in the latter group, and I’d definitely say it was worth it.

And as for listening to them on a come-down… I can’t imagine anything worse for a hangover… Except for that song ‘Ruby Ruby Ruby Ruby’... I’d contemplate suicide if I heard that in that state…

Topic: The Lounge / Mean or funny - who is right?

I’m going to call funny… I mean, I showed this (wait for it to load) to people at work, and they didn’t find it terribly amusing, so maybe I’m a bit mean….

But doing it once to a creature that’s not running at full tilt, it’s just a bit of fun…. do it repetitively, and you’re a couple of steps away from being a serial killer.

Topic: Golf Talk / Hot weather

My home city now hold the record for heat waves. This isn’t something I’m proud of, I’m actually very sad, because 35+ isn’t exactly weather to play much golf in :(

An edited clip from news.com.au:

Adelaide to break capital city heatwave record
ADELAIDE will today break the record for the longest heatwave recorded in any Australian capital city, as the extreme weather spreads into two other states.

Temperatures in the city are predicted to rise to 40 degrees Celsius. It will be the 11th consecutive day of temperatures above 35 degrees in the South Australian capital, surpassing the previous capital city heatwave record of 10 days above 35 degrees, in Perth in 1988.

Adelaideans can expect no immediate relief, with temperatures forecast to remain over 38 degrees until next Wednesday.

And I’m meant to be playing Glenelg on Sunday which is a beautiful course… I’m betting my playing partner will cancel now. sigh

Topic: Golf Equipment / Irons For "Average Player"

For someone of 188cm height. Usually you need to +1 inch longer and 2 degree upright lie.

I wouldn’t listen to him, and go get fitted on a lie board dude. I’m 195cm and was told similar stuff, but it’s about body shape as well as height. Because I have a longer torso, I ended up being 2 degrees flat, not 2 upright.

Topic: Sports Talk / Tyson to Fight Again

Tyson’s a nutcase, and definitely a bit of an unknown, I think it all depends on his level of conditioning before entering the fight. If he has his timing and his stamina, he’s as dangerous as anyone. If he fights like he did in the last couple, Larry could make a fool of him.

Anyone looking for a laugh at Tyson’s expense should check out this clip of Mike’s craziest moments

Topic: Golf Talk / Ultimate Golfer Fight.

With the exception of a few pro’s, most would laugh with scorn at the idea of risking their one main asset, their body, in something as silly as a cage fight.
If people’s careers can be put out by a small back injury, imagine a golfer coming back after having their shoulder dislocated with an arm-bar.
Leave that sort of barbarian crap to cavemen like Kimbo
