Topic: Mizuno mp-60's

Hi all I know this treads a bit old but im having problems with a fairly new set of mp60
Got them custom fit nippon stiff shafts
Problem is i just cant hit them as far as my old cobras
They seem to come off sweet enough with reasanable flight angle and stop or backup on the greens, but distance lacking.
mp60,5 iron 160mts
cobra 5 iron 175 mts

hc 15 play weekly
Question,is it normal for a blade type iron to loss distance
As per nornal they were great till I bought they!!!!

i’d check your lofts for a start. for example. my pw is 47 degrees (Mizuno MP-57). the cobra s9 pw is 44 degrees which means the cobra will go further. my 9 iron is 43 degrees so the cobra pw is really only a 9 iron.

companys started doing this to promote that their club goes further. eg Nickent say they have the longest 5 iron but their loft is lower so technically its not a 5 iron at all. its sneaky and misleading. i can’t believe golf companys would say anything to sell their product lol

other than that i would say your shafts are too stiff.

I have a set of 1990 Cobra’s similar (maybe slighly smaller) in design to the MP 60 with a 29 5i and Rifle stiff 5.5 shafts. I also have a set of 2007 Cobra FP’s with a 26 5i and Nippon stiff 1030 shafts (Cobra’s version of Nippon1050)

I personally find the 3 degrees less in loft, mid cavity head and lighter shaft translated to about 8m extra in distance over the blade type club. So I find loft is king when it comes to distance. I’d be checking the lofts of both 5i’s. Forget about the numbers and concentrate on the lofts;-)

One thing I noticed is, while the Nippon’s are a great light shaft and feel very smooth, in my experience they felt a lot softer in stiff flex than the Rifle 5.5…more like a Rifle 5.0. However, I guess that dosen’t apply to your distance problem, it’s more a “feel” or maybe an accuracy thing.

cobra and daiwa were prone for stonger lofts than any other company tried a daiwa hitrac iron about 7 years ago and was hitting the 8 iron 170meters when the pro checked it an his loft and lie it came up at 30 degrees similar loft to a 6iron he said no wonder they have been selling heaps as everyone cant believe the distance they are getting

Distance breaks down through the range
Old shafts were rifle stiff
New shafts nippon 950 stiff
Dont get me wrong, the ball comes off sweet and very accurate just wondered if by going to a lighter club and shaft has that lost some of the power
I normally give the ball a fair whack average drive 240
Even chipping,i have to give it a bit extra to cover the same distance
Or could be LOFT ( lack of fffucing talent)
Had a few tuneup lessons cant say they helped more hindered
Would hate to put them on the shelf but they might be like a pretty blonde, nice to look at ,hard to handle!!

Is the loft the same on the two 5 irons? The 5 on the cobra UFi’s is 25 degrees. The MP-60 is 27 degrees. That wouldn’t make up 15m but it will have an effect.

I have recently picked up a custom made set of these irons. I play off a 5 and they cater to all my needs but could also see how they would benifit a higher handicaper. The grain flow forged provides the best feeling iron I have tried including titleist, callaway, hogan and others. If you are in the market for a new set of irons and are serious about your golf then give these clubs a go, you wont be disappointed.

I picked these up off a guy from ebay who works in the states and orders directly from Mizuno. I had them custom made to 3-PW, DG S300, +1/2”, 1* upright, golf pride full cord w/ 2 papers. Cost me under $900 brand new delivered. He always has new custom mizuno sets on ebay so do a search and grab yourself a bargain

I am currently using Ping i3+ blades with CS Lite stiff shafts. While I am happy with them, I reckon I deserve a new set of irons.

Any opinions as to how they compare with MP 60’s or AEP’s in terms of head size, offset, forgiveness etc?

Cheers

Ian

i am curious about this too. as soon as my move is done i want my irons tinkered to fit and that includes shaft flex plus all the other stuff! remember the PM virge? i am coming soon

What are the stocck shafts like? Currently playing a True Temper Dynamic Gold R300… what are the reg and stiff shafts like?

Stock is DG shafts . . . Reg and Stiff are all DG.

Great clubs IMHO.

bingo! the thread I was looking for. these are a set that I am considering at the moment.

Good to hear the reviews of folk who own them and have hit them… all good food for thought!

Someone mentioned a bit earlier the thin top line on the MP60. I've looked at the MP30 at address and actually thought it looked quite chunky, a similar thickness to Hogan irons.

Does the MP60 have a thinner top line than the MP30?

Or do my irons have a REALLY thin top line to consider the MP30 and Hogan irons top line to be thick?

not sure which hogan irons youre referring to, but if theyre the apex edge pros, the mp-60's are thinner

i dont think the mp-60's are chunky at all

I have MP-30's, which are fairly similar...tried the 60's at a demo night and not a lot between the 2.

I love my 30's, only issue I have at all with then is wear rate...on my short irons which I use a lot the face is starting to show a noticable wear mark after about 18months of use...that said I practise a fair bit.

They aren't that hard to hit, mid teens or better can definately look at em. A guy of 16 got a set of 60's at my club and loves em, he is down to 12 now though.

Make sure you demo first though...your opinion is really all that counts for your clubs.

Yeah, i keep my handicap at Riverside Oaks and only really get to play the minimum amount of comp rounds at Riverside. Mates make me play off 14 around Gordon in our Social comp.

$%#@ Gordon!

I learnt to play my golf there almost 25 Years Ago.

Those houses down the first really got a beating!!

Hit the club house roof a few times coming home on the 18th.

Do you find them hard to hit playing off 18? I thought they were more aimed at low/mid handicaps, but I guess handicap isn't always a direct indication of ball striking ability.

Had them - played with them - matched them up ...

Went back to my Hogans... nothing wrong with them... just prefer the Hogan's... little nicer to hit badly.

Peter, I'm a chopper - a reasonably strong one, but a chopper nonetheless - I find that I get better results with the 60s than I did with the x16s ... the shaft probably suits me better too ...

Hi,

You can call me a Mizuno evangelist!!

I've been using MP60s for about a year now. I love them. They just look so good at address and it gives you good feedback. However, like all forged irons, they are prone to little dings.

I play off 18, so you don't have to be a low handicapper to use these babies.
