Topic: Your Favourite Golf Courses / How about a New Topic...

I usually drive right past the Eagle Ridge front door on route to St Andrews Beach….My second home is around the courses like LaTrobe, GAcres, Kew etc. Good value golf close to town.

Not a lot happening of late. Here’s one for you lot in Melbourne. What are your favourite courses close to the CBD? I include the (no longer) mud belt in this list.

Missed all the recent discussion re StAB. Before the course was built, the archie was out for and marketing day to explain his design to prospective members. Although the area shown is the Fingal plot, this give a cool insight to the mind of the designer.

What about Jack's place at Wonga Park? Or Croydon?

Neither are too far from Eltham

If you're in KGround, head up Henley Road, jump fence and you're in the new course at the Heritage...

Re: 13th hole.

Is a fairway that pinches in to 35 metres at its narrowest unreasonably narrow? Seems like a generous target to me.

The original fairway was more "domed" and had to have some work with the front end grader. He took about a metre of height off and probably should have done more...tough hole into it!

That and the site of the 15th green are about the only spots that had earth moved, except of course, tees...

15th at St Andrews Beach. Initially dissapointing beacuse it suffered in comparison to most of the holes there, grows on you. The second shot which is more often than not blind, is a real challenge in line and length.

Topic: Your Favourite Golf Courses / Eastern Golf Club on the move?

I was at a function with some senior EGC members yesterday and they expressed profound dissapointment (really pissed orrf) that the deal was dropped. Their small faction did not have a problem with the proposed travel, are tired of the eastern hill climb and the place is virtually out of water. The cheaper fees and the use of a cart was a huge plus for them...

It is pretty cool . . . I have downgraded my Foxtel to Sport only . . . save me $40 a month and mininova or btmon will cater to the rest.

With my DiVX DVD Player, I fit, for example, 22 episodes of "Married with Children" onto 1 DVD and the quality is just fine...

These will keep me going for a while... biggrin.gif

There used to be a 9 hole public course in Rosanna, just north of t he Rosanna rail station, on the east side of the track, but was turned to parkland. The course behind Latrobe Uni was part of the Mont Park mental asylum and I am sure that it's still there, called Strathallan? (9 Holes).

Sorrento Downs was adjacent my folk's holiday house and we where chased off the place many times as kids by the mad green keeper. He objected to us pinching the flag sticks.

Why would a member accept that? Members get attached - I'd be surprised if it went through.

The EGC land is worth approx $90M. The club needs at least 75% member support and their are three compelling plusses:

1/ Once Eastlink is up, travel times aren't anywhere as bad as now and
2/ Members get half price memberships subs for 3 years...
3/ A much better golf course

The mail I have is that subject to members accepting, the Eastern Golf Club will re-locate to Kingston Links, which they have offered 20-30+ million for. The land at EGC is to be sold off as housing. My source is reliable and a member.

Makes you wonder how many suburban clubs go through these issues...

really? I'm not sure anyone but these guys is going to buy a monaro just to do powerslides.

These guys have a great gig on that show. Powerslides in a monaro and hammering around spain in a lambo.

I know we are at least one series behind, but they said last night that was the last in the series. It can't be, it has only just come back on this year. Surely there is more to come??

Go to torrentz.com and download the lot...

Player,

Just watched the video. Very cool.

Just fascinating to hear Tom talk about tees and cards/handicapping. So true that the regimented mentality clubs fall into because of handicapping system dissuades them from doing interesting things with day-to-day course set up. Alister Mackenzie warned of the exact same thing at the end of the Spirit of St. Andrews.

Would love to watch others if you have them.

Coupladays and I will post the others...

Members can arrange for unaccompanied guests to play St AB as well.
Given their desire to get people on the course, they seem to be fairly accommodating, as long as a member rings up and organises it. They don't actually have to play with you, as I understand it.

If anyone is interested, I could try and get a round going down there through some members I know. I think the rate is $75 as a members guest.

I'm sure 'player' could probably confirm all of this for us.
edit : probably should have posted in the other ST AB thread and kept this one for Tither's reviews.

They are fine if a member does the intro. The guests can play without member on the day. Not sure if it is still $75 though...

What exactly is on offer these days and what does it cost, if you don't mind? Are the original 'no subs' memberships still being sold? Or have they been capped and they are selling different types now?

Cheers,

Al

The 'no subs' offer is still the fundamental membership model. New individual 'E' class members can pay the $fifty$ upfront or the company offers an installment option, ie, 46% now, 18% once Fingal opens and 36% when official c'house opens. These figures are from the club's website.
