Topic: Golf Talk / What's in a name?

Tingayj Tingay is my wifes cats name and J is my last initial.

12 or so years ago my wife got a kitten and wanted me to help name it. I was watching the AFL on tv and wasnt interested. to make her go away I started calling out the names of players on the TV

me: “Lyon”
she: “thats stupid”
me: “alright, how about Stynes”
she: “thats even worse”

I got through febey, grinter and most of my melbourne demons players before I said “tingay” she liked the name and the cat got it. and she had no idea where the name came from.

about a year later someone asked here why she named her cat after a footballer. I copped it for a week.

Topic: Golf Talk / am i a burglar?

I got down to 13 many years ago playing every saturday and practising during the week. I gave the game away for about 5 years and when I came back they said they were going to give me 14. I complained so they had me put in 3 cards (all in the 90’s) and they would work something out. they gave me 19. First comp day I was fired up with my burgular mask, black outfit and sack over my back with “loot” marked on it. Stroke off the back marks. put three balls out of bounds off the first tee and had a 13. nett 75 for the day wasnt too bad.
now off 18 and as it turns out the handicapper got it right.

Topic: Golf Talk / How did that happen!

on the 16th fairway at huntingdale for the masters a couple of years ago, I forget the golfer, but we could see off the tee it was headed our way. a woman standing next to us turned away as it bounced, hit her on the shoulder and pop up into her umbrella and wedged neatly in the forks. everyone was looking for the ball including the woman with the umbrella.
pretty funny.

Topic: Rules of Golf / Getting more adept with the rules

my suggestions

1/ reading the book cover to cover several times, its a dry read, but it starts to make sense in the end. Ask your pro for a copy or download one from the net and have one in your bag and one in the house for a quick read any time. (the R and A web site has downloadable rules and decisions on rules books)

link to Royal and Ancient Web page

2/ golf mags, most golf magazines have a rules forum, read and understand these definitions, if they dont make sense get out your rules book and work it out.

3/ be careful of the advise on rules you get out on the course. carry your book with you and confirm (later) what was told by the people in your group. I still cant get over the level of ignorance that is out there, I caddied for one our clubs best players (since turned pro) and he had no idea of the rules!!

4/ try the following link, its a bit of fun even if some of the rules will never come up in your normal round
US PGA Rules Quiz

I take pride in knowing the rules, and sometimes it can help your out on the course by saving a penalty or two. shots are too hard to save to give 2 away for an incorrect drop.

Topic: Golf Equipment / Vision Golf Ball Test

Hi Tingayj,

I like your work, and I appreciate the time and effort in posting
the review.
Keep in touch as I will put you on the Russell Project TP team.
I need players that understand our current balls and can write a full report on their experiences. The new balls for mid 2008 should be interestring.

In my last round I hit around 30+ putts, 2 bunker shots and a couple short chips with the UV/Arctic/xpert and my usual ball NXT tour and the end result was I reckon the UV/Arctic were the best mostley due to the feel on putts. (should have had less putts, but it was all in the name or research).
The real test has been at practice this week. 2 hours over the last 3 days with the UV and Arctic on our practice green, chipping area and bunker.
In the end I was hitting with so much confidence that the slight over hits just seemed to go a bit higher and pull up a bit quicker. I know these balls go longer off the tee, but I am now convinced if they were 20% shorter I WOULD STILL USE THEM. Its all about getting the ball in the hole, and ‘russell’ just seems to know where the hole is.

finally, Boz I use the <vision> mark as my alignment tool when putting, is this placed anyware particular, ie on the centre/balance point of the ball (like the pro v) or just an alignment tool (like the NXT)

Topic: Your Favourite Golf Courses / Canadian golf

I played at Prince George in British columbia 18 months ago and it was great. (it reminded me of Mollymook in NSW if anyone has played that, or the old course at cobram. lots of trees, lots of doglegs)
but if an outback country course like this is any gauge, then I wouldnt be surprised if canada had lots of good courses

the course is closed for 4 months of the year as it gets to minus 30C in the winter,

Topic: Sports Talk / What is peter roebucks story?

sounds like everything you would hate about a private school pompous english knob. no wonder him and bothom didnt get on.
and apparently he was instumental in sacking brian lara from his county team. smart move!

the judges comments suggest he satisfied “some need” in spanking these boys. I think that reflects his attitudes, especially to colonials and foreighers. to read the court quotes and then have him talk about racism in sport is enough to make me sick.

I will be happliy skipping over his articles from now on.

Topic: Golf Talk / my golf trip (err I mean family holiday trip to Victoria)

I get over to WA every 6 weeks or so, havent played any in the Bunbury area, but will definately give capel a try next trip.

(pity about werribee, when I was there I had to pay a levy to help pay for a new dam, pumping system and I think they even bought into the local market gardens watering system. it was supposed to make the course drought proof. sounds like it didnt work. great lay out. long holes, wide fairways good bunkers and big greens. what a shame)

I think bags are pretty much disposable,

I buy a mid range bag every 4 years or so. currently have a light weight (carry or buggy) eagles and birdies bag which is about half way through its term and still looks new.

Topic: Golf Talk / Anyone else fed up with the fairway Nazis?

My club a few years ago logged your tee off time and stamped your card on completion. these stats would surely identify where a back log occured. 1 slow round got you a warning plus counciling, 2nd warning and you get to play with a member of the committee, no one ever got a third warning.

And if your playing a public course on a busy time then you just have to remember your out having a good time, not at home mowing the lawns. I hate a 5 hour round, but when I go to the local council course at 2pm on a sunday you get what you get. just chill out and enjoy the walk, take a rules book and brush up, take a brush and clean your clubs, take some tweezers and do you nasal hairs, but getting upset with the beginners in front isnt their fault, sunday arvo is their time on the course, not yours. if you want a 4 hour round, stick to your saturday competition and maybe even join the committee and take a stance against slow play.
but its a fun game, just chill

Topic: Sports Talk / What is peter roebucks story?

I listened and watched most of the sydney test and have read just about every peice relating to the game and I just cant stand peter roebuck. I never really liked him in the first place, but to call for ponting to resign and then say he was just trying to get the idea out in the open, and then that he did us all a favour by bringing things to a head. what a tosser. I stopped reading his articles on saturday after I heard on SEN that he had been convicted of assault. the following is from wikipedia and is backed up by newpaper articles.

“Roebuck in 2001 was given a suspended jail sentence after admitting caning three young cricketers he had offered to coach. He pleaded guilty to three charges of common assault involving three South African teenagers between 1 April and 31 May, 1999.[1] Roebuck was originally accused of indecent assault but pleaded guilty to lesser charges of common assault. However, the judge said he did not accept the purity of Roebuck’s motives. He said: “It was not appropriate to administer corporal punishment to boys of this age in circumstances such as these. It seems so unusual that it must have been done to satisfy some need in you.” Ian Fenny prosecuting said: “Roebuck then pulled the boy towards him, in what appeared to be an act of affection. He then asked if he could look at the marks on the boy’s buttocks, something which he in fact did.”

Topic: Golf Talk / moral dilema re nonconforming driver

I agree with POM 100%, you cant choose which rules you like and which you can ignore.
If you break the rules in a club competition deliberately you are a cheat.
if you break the rules accidentially and someone calls you on it you may be dissapointed to learn your error, but that shouldnt give you cause for verbal abuse.

If we cant be self regulating we are inviting the need for the golf nazi’s, and we all want to avoid that.

Try and beat that team and all West Australian – Zoe Goss got Lara out did think about Pigeon or Warne but not from WA

couple of points on your “west australian” team, brendon julian was born in new zealand, but at least he played pretty much all his cricket in WA, but Mr Gilchrist (thats how spell it over here – correctly) born and made state debut in NSW.

like most good things in WA (appart from the weather, and then even your famous sunsets are second hand) they come from ‘over east’

Topic: Golf Talk / How long can you drive

I read an article in golf Australia last year that showed how far pro’s hit and how far they think they hit. there was around 5-10% discrepency. I dont think we are any different.
HOWEVER to suggest that no one NOT playing on the tour can average 250m is not logical.

I CONSISTANTLY hit my drives 10-20% longer than my mate who plays off 3. If hes hitting 4 iron to the green, I hit 5 or 6. The difference is, he hits the green and putts for par/birdie, I am into a bunker and end up with bogie/double.
If he could hit his drives as far as me, with the rest of his game he would be on the tour. But he’s not 6’2” and 95kg like me. he doesnt hit every ball off the tee like he is trying to hurt it, all he wants is his drive off the first to land within 10 meters from his drive off the 18th, I just want every drive to go as far as I can.

There are a few of us prone to exaggeration, but to say every claimed big hitter is kidding himself is wrong.
I said I was between 240-260 and I am confident that the next drive I hit will be in that range (drove the first at box hill today off the back tees 255m into greenside bunker – does that count)

Topic: Golf Talk / Anyone wear Cancer Council polo shirts?

hit off at 7 this morning and it was already 31c on the way to an expected top of 40C.
my shirt (the only one they had in my size) was a brown color, not the best I would have thought for a hot day, but it was great. I will definately get a couple more.
they are not exactly a taylored fit, so dont give the nike shirts a run on the fasion stakes, but they are definately comfortable, I didnt get hot, didnt have the desire to constantly pull up my sleeves and I didnt have to use sunscreen. Highly reccomend them.

(also used the Vision golf balls for the first time and got my best score for 12 months- check out the golf equipment forum)

Topic: Golf Equipment / Vision Golf Ball Test

I finished reading all the above and couldnt help myself.
Rebel at Highpoint in melboure has the 6 packs of UV yellow, 6 and 12 packs of the artic white and 6 pack samplers with 2 of each. bought a couple of samplers and am playing friday.
Surprised no one mentioned how good they are to put with. the softness of the UV is fantastic. I tend to be a bit tentative, but they come off the putter great, you can hit them with confidence.
I currently use NXT tour mostly because I like them to putt with and they’re long. interested to see how the Xperts go out on the course this weekend.

AJ

Having got my sample pack wednesday I Played 18 holes this morning at box hill in Melbourne.
decided before I hit off to use the UV on the front nine and the Expert on the back.
I am a previous 13/14 handicapper coming back to the game after about 5 years off for injury and poor time management. I have played 10 games this year and have struggled to play to my new handicap of 18.

front nine – 6 pars
back nine – 2 pars and lost 3 balls (the xperts are pretty easy to spot from a distance, but they dont float, nor come back when you hit them over a fence and accross the road)

8 pars in a day that I didnt hit the ball all that well. I would have been lucky to have had 8 pars all year, let alone 6 on the front 9!

I’m not saying it was the ball that did it, but I will definately be using these balls from now on because -

1/ The UV are long. I found them at least as long as my regular NXT tour with both my irons and my driver.
2/ UV is great to putt with. You can really give them a confident tap
3/ They are VERY easy to see. this not only helps to find em, but adds enjoyment when you hit them well. I hit a couple of hybrids today that went long straight. Both myself (and the guys I was playing with) could follow the ball over its whole 220m flight. Sure it was less satisfying seeing my ball so cleary enter the water or cut accross three fairways, but its great to watch you ball so clearly off the tee actually hit the ground.
4/ I have always played a “hit and run” shot with my mid irons (4,5,6) and the ball rolls well up to the green
5/ The Experts were ok, but I prefer the UV or the Arctic white for both distance and feel.
6/ They are around $10 a box cheaper. This is not reason to change, but a nice bonus
7/ support a local company

In short will not be using the NXT tour balls anymore (not sure they were right for me anyway).
I aslo notice that Golf Universe in Burwood (formally golf works) stocks all three styles in dozen boxes, just be carefull, they had the UV’s prices and marked as Experts.

thanks to the forum for introducing me to this ball. I will now be spreading the word to my golfing mates. (I have emailed most of them a copy of the following road test)

Topic: Golf Talk / How long can you drive

240-260,
I have driven 5 of the par 4s at Growling frog, two on the same day with the largest tail wind imaginable. (340m and 360m holes) I know I know, I wouldnt believe me either, but the next hole is back into the wind, I hit driver, 3 wood, 5 iron on a 475 par five and pulled up short. it gets very windy out there.

I hit an Taylor made R5-80 with aldila nv shaft. love it long time and it normally loves me back.
Usually use it on every par 5 and about half the par 4s. if only I could putt.
