Topic: GPJ’s Journey to ... God Knows Where Hey GPJ, I’m pretty close to signing up at Beacon hills.. But my old man who is a member at both Waverley golf club and Moonah links.. think he has turned into a bit of a golf snob since being at those 2 courses. Anyway he wants me to be sure, before signing up that Beacy has plenty of members so that when I’m not with a mate there are plenty of other groups to play comp with.. and 2 do they have online bookings? Or if they don’t do you just call to say what time you want and they throw you in a group? Hoping you can help with either of these 2 questions. Cheers mate! |

Topic: GPJ’s Journey to ... God Knows Where Yeah gaz i do enjoy that little par 3 , i like to tee it up a bit and really flight it in ….in some ways perhaps i should thank the indexers as it provides a chance to cash in again. I really love the stretch 14-18 , i reckon if you re on top of your game, can really boot it home from there Just need to improve my second shot approach on the third, my plan is generally a mid iron to leave me 90 or so out for a downhill pitch which i generally go ok….its getting that second shot away ok on a typical uphill or uneven lie…tricky biz, golf wasnt meant to be easy at Beacy Hills |

Topic: GPJ’s Journey to ... God Knows Where Update from last nights practice now, and it was a slightly shortened session on the front 9 at Beacy. There was a little bit of traffic just ahead of me as I teed off, so I played the 1st, then headed on over to play 6,7,8, and 9. The aim of the practice was really to work on three areas, ... my driver tee shots …....... my approach shots ….... and my putting, so in playing a few holes less, I spent a lot more time on each area. I hit a couple of tee shots on each hole, three or four approach shots from varying distances out, and then putted out several balls on each green from all corners of them. Driver …....... this was working well last night …... after a I drew the first tee shot slightly, I went with that for the rest of the afteroon’s session. I have worked out that in order to play a controllable draw shot (and not a hook) I need to start with an open clubface …. so I was lining myself up right down the middle of the fairway, and then starting them out slightly leftward before the draw kicked in and drew them back to the middle nicely. Not a hook in sight last night which makes a nice change. (It usually occurs once or twice a round when I start with a squarer clubface and manipulate the club closed with rolling wrists thru impact) Approach shots …...... these are still a work in progress, as some days I can nail the approach shots off sloping lies, and some days I just can’t. Some days, the shots just don’t seem to add up, (after noting the clubface alignment pre shot, and then my divot post shot) and on those days its anyone’s guess what has just occurred. It’s all a matter of degrees though at times, and in getting the clubface angle just perfect in order to counter the slope and not have it open a degree more. Last night I hit a couple of fades “against the slope” and finished up fading it just a touch too much left of the green …. so it’s definitely a work in progress in terms of clubface and slope. Putting …........ And this is really going well at the moment. At last it’s starting to feel really good standing over a putt, and I’m really getting them to roll nicely. I am starting to understand the theory of “stroking the ball as gently as possible” ...... and at the moment, I’m really getting a feel for it. The ball is rolling very smoothly and easily with just the right amount of speed, so I’m stopping the vast majority of putts just past the hole. I’m also dropping a fair few putts in practice mode, which gives me good confidence now when I get to each green, as I feel like I can realistically make any putt. Hopefully this will continue and the greens will remain in the great condition they’re in at the moment, as I’m really enjoying putting. Post the “on course” work, and I had time for another half hours solid putting, over on the practice green. Again they were rolling very nicely and using 3 balls, I was probably dropping 1 out of the 3 on putts of all distances …... and putting out the furtherest ball from the hole …..... consistently with one more putt. (So no 3 putts). So, a good nights work, and I feel like my game is coming back to somewhere where it should be. I’ve just got to work on having my mental game switched on during comp mode, as well as do more work on my approach shots, and then just keep everything else on track, and all should be good going forward…..... |

Topic: GPJ’s Journey to ... God Knows Where
Wasa, you do love that little par 3 15th …. don’t you? I guess when you drop the ball a foot from the pin, it doesn’t play that hard does it? :-) For the rest of us mere mortals though ….... it can be a tricky little downhill hole at times I reckon, particularly when the wind is up, and is often back into you or across you …..... but once you eventualy work out the tee shot, it doesn’t play anywhere near as hard. It’s all in the club selection on the tee, in terms of distance I think, with deep bunkers butted right up to the green on either side at the front corners of the green. There is not much room for error if you play for the front half or try to land it short and roll it down and on, as the balls can certainly bounce and turn towards either bunker once they’re on the deck. Hit for the middle to back half of the smallish green though, and the only real danger is in going over the back. With say an 9 or 8 iron in hand on the tee at most, it should be coming in from a fairly high trajectory, so it should stop pretty quickly once it lands. If you’re in the bunkers though, then you’re in trouble as there is little room for error, with the green being only small. I reckon, because the green is so small, in either bunker you can consider yourself to be short sided … as they have high fronts on them, and are usually not in pristine condition, and you have not much room to work with for any pin position. The green is fairly flat to look at, but it has some great little twists and turns, and some nice subtle slopes both front to back and from one side to another as the mounds around both front bunkers effect putts if the pin is towards the front. I really like this green for its variety of breaks …... while you can see most of them, you stil have to hit them perfectly otherwise you have no hope of sinking them. I’d have to agree with your thoughts though Wasa …. the par 3 15th isn’t as hard as the 3rd hole …..... I guess a lot of people must still struggle with it a bit, in terms of either finding the bunkers or in going over the back (both can be done if you’re not careful .. been there done that). Perhaps they should just play it like you on your nearly “hole in one”, a smooth iron shot right at the pin, dropped it two foot short, one and a half foot of roll towards the hole …. then a quick few inches tap in for your bird ….... next hole please :-) |

Yes, the 3rd is always tricky and in no way do I find it the easiest hole. You need at least two really good shots on that hole to have a chance at your par. The drive as you say has to be fairly long up the hill. You can’t go left and risk the trees, and going right gives you a much longer 2nd shot, so you need to hit it straight and long, and let the slope push it slightly leftward once it lands. The 2nd shot is long, hitting over the crest of the hill and on down towards the green with either a long iron, or hybrid, or 3W. The best place to be, is definitely somewhere left of the green, so that your 3rd shot has a chance of stopping. If you finish directly above the green, instead of left, then the chip or wedge shot down to the green is perilous and you certainly can’t back yourself to stop the ball on the front to back sloping green. Go over that green and it’s not good news ….. Once you finally do get on the green though, you then have that big fast slope from front right to back left ….. so you see a lot of 3 putts the result. I certainly can’t work out how that hole could ever be regarded as the easiest on course. As you say Spec, any of the standard par 4’s on the front 9 holes, or even the par 3 6th, would be much easier I figure. |

Topic: GPJ’s Journey to ... God Knows Where Kinesh, Beacy at the moment is moving to winter golf, so its soft landings on the fairways, and the grass seems to be just a tad longer, so not there’s much run on the course. In the last two Sunday comps, we’ve had preferred lies on the fairways, but only a couple of times have I had to pick up and clean the ball …... so it’s not quite full on winter conditions yet, but its certainly not far away . so the hitting distances in general are changing in the colloer air. I probably notice it more during practice, on those late afternoons as the sun goes down …. it definitely gets a bit cooler over the last couple of holes. The green though are still rolling very nicely and remain “good to fast” which makes for some really good putting I reckon. |

Hi Kinesh …..... In regard to temperature … not really. I know they won’t go as far when it’s cold, or more importantly, when I’m cold …....... so I generally just grab a bit more club on the first couple of holes and try to swing a touch easier until I’m warmed up. On the 1st, with my approach shot, I’ll generally go with the club that will get me to the back of the green distance, as I’m usually on a “ball slightly below the feet lie” anyway, so the ball is likely to fade and drop a couple of metres .. (so I tend to over estimate the distance requirement early on, and just swing easier). I just use the same ball throughout the round. At the moment Im using the Taylormade Lethal’s …....... which are pretty good I reckon, not too hard, not too soft, and with a predictable amount of roll. |

Topic: GPJ’s Journey to ... God Knows Where Yea i find the rating fairly remarkable, i don’t doubt for a low marker it aint all together hard however , cumulative scores across the board surely would tell a different story. Typically second shot will be played on a decent slope with ball above feet. Followed by a third shot on a harsh downward slope. If not flighted well, that shot will keep going , putting you out of the frame for 2 points. Now compare this to a downhill 138m Par 3 on the 15th…that is now ranked as more difficult ….go figure |

Topic: GPJ’s Journey to ... God Knows Where The 3rd hole is now ranked the easiest? It’s a challenging hole, can’t get your tee shot left or you roll down into trouble, then your 2nd shot most often sits on a hill and you can’t see over the hill where it’s going. Would hardly call it easy.. Any one of the par 3’s minus the first one on the 2nd, any of the 3 finishing par 4’s on the front 9 and probably the 1st, 17 and 18 would be up there as well… strande choice.. |

Topic: GPJ’s Journey to ... God Knows Where Club and Shot Selection …....... I have worked out that this can really cost me at times (no kidding) .... after a couple of real clangers yesterday. It probably cost me 3 or 4 shots yesterday, in just picking the wrong club or option at the time. Ones that really stood out ….. ........ my chip on the par 5 3rd, where I duffed one and then sent the next over the back of the downward sloping green. Should never have been above the green to start with, but hit a poor 2nd shot with my HiFli (should have gone leftward with it instead and then had an easier chip sideways to the green) ......... a short chip on the par 3 11th …. I went with GW and rolled it past the hole by about 3m, when I should have gone with my SW. On 16 another short chip and I thought I had SW in hand …. but I had LW instead and came up about 12 feet short of the pin. I’ve just got to be more focussed. On 17 with my approach shot …. I was up against the side of the mound at the end of the fairway with the ball above my feet. I went with a 7 iron for the 134m shot, aiming right at the middle of the green . and it drifted right and long, as was always going to be the case off that lie. I just have to play for a fade (in order to get it to go straight from that lie), as well as go down one club …....... so another poor choice, and one I should have learned from in the past, as time and again I’ve watched them sail rightward. Its those little things that can really hurt my scoring ability. On the flipside, I made some good choices going around. I hit some nice par 3 tee shots off the deck, and shaped some nice drives. I did put myself in a bit of trouble off the tee a couple of times, but managed to get out of it without too much trouble (never hit two bad ones in a row) ... so they only cost me one or two minuses, when it could have been worse. Another thing that was good ….... was my putting. Time and again I gave the ball a chance to go in, and they felt really nice and smooth off the face of the putter. Some days it feels like I’m hitting them, but yesterday it was a very slow smooth backswing and just rolling the ball nice and gently to the holes. I probably missed half a dozen 20 foot putts, but nearly all of them went past the hole and stopped within a foot or so, so I was happy with my putting. So, another comp round been and gone, and this one should be another flagged round (a played to 8 replacing a played to 9). As always though it was good fun playing with Wasa, and new best mate Pete, and I’ve now got practice to do for this week, which is always a good thing. |

Topic: GPJ’s Journey to ... God Knows Where Okay, update time from Sunday’s comp up at the home of golf. Being the first Sunday of the month it was par comp off the back tees, and we headed out into the early morning light just a tick after 7am. Recently, the hole ratings have changed up at Beacy, after some boffin spent countless hours going through thousands of competition scorecards to finally come up with a reasonable 1 thru to 18 ranking of the holes. Needless to say, there are a couple of real clangers in amongst them I reckon. Anyway, I started off with a solid par (0), and then another after a pretty lame birdie attempt (+) ........ then managed to stuff up the 3rd hole par 5 for a minus. This hole unbelievably is now ranked the easiest on the course, which leads me to suspect the guy doing the ratings hasn’t seen the course. Anyway I manged to accumulate a few “halves”, but had the odd minus tossed in for good measure, but it was fairly consistent golf if not setting the world on fire. It was pretty much one step forward, one step back. Managed to finish the front 9 on minus 1 ….. and off to the back 9 when we then lost one of the playing partners due to a bad back. Grumpy Mark pulled the pin citing a bad back and a minus 3 on his scorecard, so we bid him a fond farewell and then headed on down the par 5 10th. Managed to get myself back on track and then dropped another, got a nice birdie on the uphill par 3 13th, before giving it right back on the next hole. Solid par on 15, a solid bogey on 16, and a nice par after missing the green twice on 17 (missed the approach, then chipped right on and over the green . chipped it back up and in) ..... and then finished with a solid bogey after pulling my approach from 100 out …... to go back to all square for the back 9 holes. So, minus 1 was the wash-up of the round, and it was a mixed bag pretty much for the full 18 holes. There wasn’t anything really bad in the 18 holes, and nothing outstanding either …. just fairly solid golf with the odd slightly wayward shot or missed opportunity, but plenty to work on in my game as a result. |

Topic: GPJ’s Journey to ... God Knows Where Just a quick update this morning, as last night I was joined by ISG royalty Frank and his lad for a relaxed knock around 9 holes up at Beacy. No serious practice last night, aside from just trying to hit a few 64 deg wedge shots just to get a feel for the club.. I did learn not to open the face on it too much when in a bunker though, as the club has little bounce when the face is open, and it just slides thru under the ball with just a very minor glancing effect. Much better for me to play it a bit squarer with a high lofted club, to make sure that the face gets behind the ball I would assume, so I’ll have a go at that next. I don’t tend to “find” many bunkers around Beacy (famous last words?) ..... so it will be a practice activity. I also tried to hit a few approach and pitch shots with it, but still have no exact number in terms of hitting distances. I figure that will take time to nail down, as the elevation changes effect distance on most shots around the course, so that might take a bit of time to nail down, unless I just find a flat section and get the rangefinder out. At this stage though it won’t be going in the bag for comps, but it is good fun trying to get a handle on it’s capabilities. Finished up just a tad later than usual last night, and you really notice it these when the sun drops down a bit, as it turns bloody cold on those last couple of holes at this time of year. As always, it was a nice relaxed stroll with Frank and the lad who is busy trying to learn the game. I had to laugh when the lad actually rang Frank from two fairways across, to tell him that he couldn’t find his ball …. and …. what should I do now? So another fun night of hitting balls up at Beacy…..... |
