Oh that will hurt.
When I ring my business partner from OS it’s more than $1 per minute from memory.

But if it’s data usage argue it and negotiate.
We got that 3k bill down to $1500

Wow! How old is he?

We’ve had a 3k bill but that was overseas data usage. Other than that I’ve only at $500 bills when I’m OS for a couple of weeks and using the phone a lot.

…..

He’s 18. A little more info has come out today…........apparently he rang a mate in Thailand…........we are getting an itemised account to have a better look at it.

I had to laugh when the lad actually rang Frank from two fairways across, to tell him that he couldn’t find his ball …. and …. what should I do now?

Topic: GPJ’s Journey to ... God Knows Where

Just a quick update this morning, as last night I was joined by ISG royalty Frank and his lad for a relaxed knock around 9 holes up at Beacy.

No serious practice last night, aside from just trying to hit a few 64 deg wedge shots just to get a feel for the club..

I did learn not to open the face on it too much when in a bunker though, as the club has little bounce when the face is open, and it just slides thru under the ball with just a very minor glancing effect.

Much better for me to play it a bit squarer with a high lofted club, to make sure that the face gets behind the ball I would assume, so I’ll have a go at that next.

I don’t tend to “find” many bunkers around Beacy (famous last words?) ..... so it will be a practice activity.

I also tried to hit a few approach and pitch shots with it, but still have no exact number in terms of hitting distances. I figure that will take time to nail down, as the elevation changes effect distance on most shots around the course, so that might take a bit of time to nail down, unless I just find a flat section and get the rangefinder out.

At this stage though it won’t be going in the bag for comps, but it is good fun trying to get a handle on it’s capabilities.

Finished up just a tad later than usual last night, and you really notice it these when the sun drops down a bit, as it turns bloody cold on those last couple of holes at this time of year.

As always, it was a nice relaxed stroll with Frank and the lad who is busy trying to learn the game.

I had to laugh when the lad actually rang Frank from two fairways across, to tell him that he couldn’t find his ball …. and …. what should I do now?

So another fun night of hitting balls up at Beacy….....

a lot of fades, intentional?

The Big Queasy
A two-foot putt counts the same as a two-foot drive.
http://www.golflink.com.au/...

Yep Kinesh, definitely intentional.

I do like to vary my practice, as it would get a tad repititious just hitting the same shots night after night.

Sometimes I go around for the night and hit one draw, then a fade, then another draw etc …(which makes me really think about positioning the ball)..... sometimes I’ll try to play 2 clubs more and just do 3/4 length swings for a few holes, or even a nights practice.

Somtimes its trying to hit high shots and low shots for a night …..... but I’m usually trying to do something out of the ordinary at some stage during each practice session …..... just to keep the “interest levels” right up there, and to try and learn something new about my game, or in how to play the course a different way.

In playing and practicing so often, its a bit of a luxury, but its certainly one that I really enjoy.

Topic: GPJ’s Journey to ... God Knows Where

Summary time ….

And as you might have picked up from some of the shots I hit last night, there was a common theme in what I was trying to do.

The old “Francie gay fade”, is something that I can do fairly comfortably.

In having the odd wild slice for 20yrs or so, a gay fade used to be my stock standard shot when playing golf, although back then it was never intentional …..... it just happened time after time with just the odd slice springing up every now and then.

Anyway …...... after hitting a slight fade with driver for my first shot of the evenings practice, I thought “okay lets just go with it”, as like usual, it just felt so very easy to do … hence all the subsequent Francie gay fades I hit going around the hills of Beacy.

By the way, I do have to pay Frank royalties for each time I say “Francie gay fade”, but I can afford it.

What was interesting though, was not how easy I could hit them, but how easy they fitted into the course. On a few, particularly with driver I did have to aim at the trees rightward, but I have a fair bit of confidence in getting the fade to appear, so there wasn’t any tension in the body during the swing …. and they just curved leftward nice and safely, and I didn’t lose any discernable distance with the driver.

The other thing I do appreciate about playing “FGF’s”, is that it forces me to take one more club, and in doing so, I feel like I don’t have to hit the club flat out. I can just position the ball in my stance and set myself up for a FGF … and then just swing smoothly.

My FGF iron tee shots (on the par 3’s of 13 and 15) were just nice smooth no fuss swings at about 80% power …. and that is a very comfortable and relaxed way to go about playing golf I reckon ….... so I might continue to work at it, but particularly with my approach shots, as they do land nice and softly with a FGF.

The other new part of the game last night, was in putting another wedge into the bag …. the 64 degree.

I’ve had this old thing sitting in Francie’s Footlocker for a few years now, and I’d read on here recently about the 64 wedge and how handy they are around the greens etc …. hence me slipping it into the bag.

In using it ….... it’s certainly a big leap from my 60 Deg LW, but its a really fun club to use …. so I was hitting a fair few shots with it going around last night, and trying to work out hitting distances with it and what types of shots I could play with it.

On a normal smooth swing its good for 60m, but one thing I have found is that I am better off playing it square for a full shot, instead of opening up my stance. Open my stance and it drops way short of 60m.

Around the green though and it’s just so versatile. I can close down the face and hit a fairly low chip that rolls out just as far as it flies, or I can really sky one and have it land 30m away and stop within a few feet. (I spent a bit of time post my 9 holes hitting the club around the practice green and shooting a few skyward)

It’s a club that is going to take a lot of experimenting with though, in order to get a good handle on what the ball is going do off the clubface for the numerous type of shots I may want to hit with it ….. but it’s certainly a club that can make you smile …. and I like that.

At the moment I’m trying to work out …... if I have a club in the bag currently, that I can afford to chuck out, in order to make room for the 64, but it’s not clear yet if I can squeeze it in, as the current clubs in the bag are just looking at each other and saying “you should go” to each other.

Time will tell on that one though, but in the meantime, I’ll just carry 15 clubs when in practice mode ….......

Topic: GPJ’s Journey to ... God Knows Where

Okay update from last nights practice hit around Beacy’s Hill course ….. back 9.

Started with a mild Francie gay fade off the tee of 10 Par 5 …...... a mild fade with the 17 Degree HiFli to some 50m short of the green …..... and then hit a nice smooth 64 deg wedge up and on. Two putt par.

11th Par 3 170m ….... Hit a nice bullet of a 5 iron that landed on the green and stopped within 2 inches of the plug mark on the softish green. Two putt par.

12th Par 4 …...... A nice Francie gay fade with driver, a solid choked down HiFli landed on the left front edge of the green but bounced down the bank ….. chip on with 64 deg wedge …... missed a 5ft putt for par, tap in bogey.

13th Par 3 140m ….... A nice Francie gay fade with 6 iron to front edge, two putt par.

14th Par 5 ......... A nice Francie gay fade with driver starting right finishing back in the middle of the fairway, 195m to go. HiFli to just wide right of the green, chip on with 64 wedge, 8ft birdie putt of goodness.

15th Par 3 …..... 8 iron off the deck gay faded its way to 12ft shy of the pin ….. missed the birdie putt, tap in par.

16th Par 4 ….... Waited ten minutes under the umbrella as a deluge engulfed the course ….. then when it eventually lightened up a touch, hit a nice Francie gay fade to left of fairway part of the way up the hill ….. 118m to go. Hit an 8 iron fade just a bit too well, finishing up in the ditch on the left of the green, but 15m or so past the pin. Chip on with 64 wedge …. missed the par saver, tap in bogey.

17th Par 4 ….... Nice straight drive to 100m out. PW Francie gay fade to 15ft left of pin ….... lipped out the birdie putt, tap in par.

18th Par 4 …..... Nice Francie gay fade with driver to 95m out, left half of fairway . hit GW up and on …..... solid two putt par.

Well it’s not me …...... and no, I hadn’t noticed there was another GPJ on here. (So I don’t know who it is)

Could get confusing though if there are two GPJs.

Sooooooooo Gpj, with all this knowledge and practice why aren’t you a gun or at least a decent player ?

I’m Bill Doova and i’m a chopper

Ouch ….........

Fair point though I guess, given I can string a few nice holes together on occasion.

For myself, I just don’t have the discipline (or the inclination) to go and get myself a coach ….... or for that matter stand at the range hitting 100×5 irons to really groove my swingwith it …. or to have my swing picked apart and put back together by someone else.

I’ve had one half hour golf lesson in my life, and probably won’t ever have another one, (now being the wrong side of 50) ...... as I prefer to work things out by trial and error and to do my own research.

I would also much rather spend my time doing what for me, are the enjoyable parts of the game, actually walking the course, and in hitting some “good shots”, rather than mindless grinding of balls.

Those good shots by the way, don’t have to be in getting the lowest score possible each and every time I go out to play.

At times I’d rather pull off a tricky shot on a hole and bogey it …. than to have a boring par that I can’t remember 5 minutes later.

For me, golf is not “always” about the score, and never has been.

Now having the “knowledge” is one thing, but being able to:

1 …... remember it at the time you need to, or

2 …. being able to apply it at the time you need to

...... is another matter entirely, and at both of those, I’m just not consistent enough.

We can all be brilliant on the golf course in hindsight, or when playing our “provisionals” ........ so for me, it’s about improving that side of things, as well as just getting more consistent and skillful with the actual shots I hit.

While I am aware of my current capabilities and more importantly, my current limitations when it comes to golf, it’s always nice to have a second opinion …... so thanks for that Bill.

After many recent changes here is my updated WITB.
Driver; Nike Covert Tour stiff KK Silver
3wood; Nike SQ stiff Project X 7C3
5wood; TaylorMade R11 Ti stiff Fujikura Blur
3-Pw; TaylorMade Tour Preferred Muscle Backs DG S300
Wedges; Titleist Vokey SM4 52-6 & 58-8
Putter; Titleist Scotty Cameron Newport 2 33”
Ball; Nike 2013 20xi
Shoes; Nike TW 2013 Free’s
Bag; Titleist 9.5” staff bag
Cart; Smoothy Micro Suspension

“Wooosaaaahh”

Ok, so I couldnt help myself.

Driver: The Covert Tour now has an Oban Kiyoshi BLK shaft in it, set to 11.5R

3Hy: Put my VR Pro 21 deg hybrid back in the bag to replace the 3i. I’ve found I’m using it more often right now. There are a few shots that require a high 200m ball, and this is the club. Much higher launch.

Putter: Method Midnight 006 @35”. I’m really impressed with this putter. I’m especially impressed with the groove tech and I think it works well. Almost identical to my Scotty Newport at address except for the colour obviously.

The thing I keep changing the most is my bag. I cant stop switching between my Titleist staff bag and my Ogio stand bag. Both are awesome for different reasons and I’m swapping on a regular basis.

I also acquired a couple of shafts to go with my already bulging collection. First one is a Matrix 7M3 BlackTie, the other is a Graphite Design AD-DI 6. Both are currently staring me in the face waiting for me to get some flexloft adapters sent from the states, however I’m yet to try sourcing them from a local supplier (which I doubt anyway).

I’m considering a 48 degree Vokey to match my 52 and 58…but we’ll see.

“Wooosaaaahh”

I put a 48 Cleveland 588 forged wedge in

while it’s a PW loft It plays as my gap wedge as my PW is 45 degrees

its great for the knock down shots yet still spins a heap….

great club for around the greens also..as it spins and stops unlike the PW which is bump n run club

the spin is different and the ball flight is different

disatnce wise only 5 meters or so

Always wanted to do this so:-

Driver – Ping G20 8.5 w/ ilima 70 x tipped 1 inch
3 wood – Titleist 909F2 13.5 w/ whiteboard 83x
Hybrid – Adams Pro Black w/ PX 6.5 HC1
Iron – MP 52 3-PW w/ S300
Wedge – Titliest Vokey 54-11 and 60-07 SM4
Putter – Odyssey 2-Ball Blade w/ Lamkin Jumbo grip and 30 grams of lead tape

Doesn’t change much – G20 just knocked out 905R w/ Blueboard 83x.

Looking for -

More loft (15) on a 3 wood (either G20 or I’ve heard the Mizuno MP Ti fairways are good)
An easier to hit hybrid or driving iron (I reckon the one mentioned is not much easier to hit than a 2 iron)
