Topic: GPJ’s Journey to ... God Knows Where Frank ….... if you happen to be around buddy … you have some new 68’s to try. I reckon you might enjoy the flatter lie angles as well, and they could just possibly …... tame that gay fade of yours a touch. So, if your interested ….... just let me know when you’d like a hit with them buddy. |

Topic: GPJ’s Journey to ... God Knows Where Summary time …...... And I think that these newly tweaked irons are going to be so good for my game. They sit so nicely on the deck behind the ball, and I find them so easy to line up with the target. Because they line up so easily, I’m confident in my swing I think, so my hands need to do bugger all when I’m swinging the club. I know the clubface is on line, so I just swing it back ….. and then swing it thru, and they just seem to start right on line. One of the issues with flatter lies apparently, is that the errors for a bad swing become more about your trajectory rather than accuracy, eg. you can hit them low or high if you catch them wrong. I haven’t had any issue with that yet, so I must be doing something right at least. In swapping over to them, I haven’t had to change my swing one bit ….. I just swing as usual, which isn’t what I was expecting. I thought I’d have to alter my swing in order to use them ….. because I just took a stab at it, when I asked Jon to set them at “2 degrees flat”. It seems though that my existing swing (on my first outing at least) is pretty well matched with them …. which was a bloody nice and an unexpected surprise. In terms of distance …. the new slightly stronger lofts certainly give a more penetrating ball flight, so the distance and then roll out factor is going to be a big learning curve over the coming few weeks I think. All of my club distance numbers are going to change, including my 3/4 swing numbers …..... so I’ll have to re-calibrate my brain quickly, otherwise it may cost me shots when I either overshoot or undershoot greens. Balls …...... and this may need to be addressed in order to go softer, for more drop and stop performance. I know in summer, the lower trajectory is going to be much harder (if not impossible) to stop around Beacy …. so I need to find some really soft balls. Chipping …... and this was the most unexpected result …. the ease with which I was able to line the face up with the flatter lie angles, that, and the fact that I caught them all nicely off the deck. I think with the slightly shallower swing, it just takes out a bit of the errors I get from time to time, in terms of catching them either fat or thin with the more upright clubs, and if that continues, then that is a real bonus, as it can cost me a shot or two per round. I was using the PW or 9 iron whenever I could around the greens because they just felt and looked so nice …. so now I’m thinking I might see about getting my other wedges bent flat if possible to match …... so make them easier to use as well. (Cleveland 52, 56, 60) So in summary …...... it was a great first up session, and looks extremely promising. Any time you can put a club in your hand and feel confident, you’re half way there I reckon, and thanks to Jon of TGP, and Brad Hughes ….... I reckon they have just added a huge amount of confidence to my game. I’m really looking forward to dialling them in for distance now, and then hopefully, taking a nice bite out of my handicap. |

Topic: GPJ’s Journey to ... God Knows Where Okay, update time from last nights practice with the MP 68 irons, all now set 2 degrees flat. A couple of clubs in the set according to Jon, the master clubfitter, were actually adjusted down by 5 degrees …..... so they should play very differently. Got to the course all excited and ready to go, and then it started raining as I got the clubs sorted out ….. geez, have the golfing gods got something against me these days? Anyway, I grabbed a coffee and then off to the 1st, resplendently dressed in my wet weather gear, yet again. Started with a half decent drive .. then found myself 128m from the pin, slight ball below my feet lie. As Jon had also tweaked the loft my irons a touch, I figured I’d go with my usual tactic from this location, but drop down a club. So it was a 9 iron instead of an 8, aiming a fair bit right of the hole location, and hoping to play for a gentle fade and have it finish on the front half of the green (rear pin). Geez, the flat club looked nice sitting behind the ball. anyway, I took a reasonable with it, and watched the thing take off like a dart. It stayed straight, then landed on the back half of the green and bounced over the back …........ oh wow, as Hacky would say. New balls please …....... I dropped another, this time I aimed right at the flag, and used a touch gentler swing …..... right on line, it landed mid green, skipped to six foot from the hole and stopped. Usually my 9 iron goes 120m, but with an easier swing, this went 128m. Nice start to proceedings. As the greens were pretty wet again I didn’t do much putting, just getting them on the green and then I’d putt if there was no obvious water, but if there was I’d just pick the balls up. On the 174m Par 3 ….... Easy swing with 5 iron flew pin high and just right . I hit another playing for a fade, and managed ot work it just short left and safe. Chipped them with my new flat PW and wow, was that easy to line up. I mentioned to Jon of TGP whilst back in the shop, that I find it hard to line up the clubs when they are too upright, it just doesn’t look right when trying to get the face to point to the target, and he said he felt the same. With the much flatter looking club though it just lines up so easily to the target with my eye, and those first two chips . one lipped out, and one was right on target from 30m away. Fast forward to the uphill par 5 4th, and after putting my drive in play, the next shot was again off a sloping lie ball below my feet. The shot from this position is to aim for the trees up on the flat section, and let the slope gently move the ball back left to the middle of the fairway …........ so I hit an easy 4 iron right at the trees ….... and that’s where it stayed, only fading slightly to keep me out of trouble. Hit another one, this time aiming up the middle of the fairway …....... like a bullet and dead straight, oh wow, these tweaked clubs seem so much straighter off ball below the feet lies …...... have to remember that. Hit 3 approach shots from 135m with 8 iron (7 iron is usually137m for me), all of them went pretty straight, and pin high or slightly longer. On the bastard dogleg left 5th hole …. and I decided to go with my 3 iron off the tee. (I generally hit 3W) ...... I just aimed to cut a slight bit off the dogleg, and just swung through it nicely. The ball sailed like a rocket thru the dogleg corner and out onto the middle of the fairway, leaving me 120m to go, and in perfect position. The fact that it was just a smooth swing now means the 3 iron is again an option on this hole as it was long enough to get me in perfect position. so, 120m ball above the feet this time .. going for an easy PW. Body aimed at the pin, so the ball will start just left of it …. nice smooth swing .. the ball started out just left a metre or two, then curled gently, landed a couple of metres short, and stopped about 2 foot from the hole. So my former 110m club is now my 120m club off that lie … nice. Onto the 6th, short uphill par 3, 8 iron usually, so I went with a 9 iron …...... played for a fade but it went straight and bounced off the green rightside …. new ball, right at the pin this time .. and it finished pin high and 10 feet left …... nice. What I was finding, was that the clubs are longer, they are straighter, and pretty bloody easy to hit. I never had one misshit with them going around. The trouble I did have with them (if you could call it that) ..... is that with a lower ballflight, the balls on landing would skip foward about 3 or 4 metres, even on the very soft greens. I had changed balls in the last week because of the soft conditions …. to go with Srixon Trispeeds, which I find a little firmer than the Taylormade Lethals. I figured with the greens being soft, even the Trispeeds would drop and stop …. but I will definitely have to re-think it and go back to soft balls I reckon, given the ball will be coming in on a lower trajectory from now on. Fast forward to the 8th …....... nice 3W off the tee, then at 140m out hit 8 irons. Did the usual off the ball above the feet lie ….... aimed left of the green …..... and sent the ball right over there …... then aimed right at the pin …... finished up just short …. last ball ….. put it on and within 15 feet. So aiming where I want it go to off any lie is pretty much the process i need to take with these clubs, rather than “use the slope”, as the clubs just seem to ignore the effects. So, I went up to the green and chipped with the ball sitting just short of the front fringe with PW …..... straight into the hole, and so bloody easy. I just picked the line, swung it gently and it rolled out perfectly on line …...... I’m liking this chipping stuff. Off to the 9th ....... 3 iron off the tee and I went for a slight draw in my setup . hit it perfectly . went for a big draw hit it perfectly went for a straight one ….... oh, so nicely up the guts. All of them within a metre distance wise, and 130m from the back in placement. So 3 smooth and easy 8 irons up the hill with just a touch taken off them …....... 2 balls finished on the green, one on the back fringe. The closest ball …..... was 10 inches shy of the flagstick, and the one on the fringe (the furtherest ball) ....... was about four paces behind the hole and had landed just short of it. So …......... summary time of Day 1 of the experiment, in going with flatter lie angles (and slightly less lofted clubs) |

Topic: GPJ’s Journey to ... God Knows Where Hey Wasa, actually it wasn’t too bad once we were out in it. The worst greens were 2, 15, and then surprisingly 18, as the water was just sliding down slowly towards the front of it. Aside from those, the rest of the course was pretty well playable, so it wasn’t too bad if you just ignored the constant cold and rain. A good chance for you to catch up on your sleep though buddy :-) Looking forward to resuming our Sunday ritual the week after Sandhurst …... and in the meantime, keep hitting them well Dave. |

Topic: GPJ’s Journey to ... God Knows Where Okay, update time again. And after having a quick swing with my MP 68’s (3-PW) in the garage last Thursday evening, and finding that the old lie angles were looking decidedly upright in appearance.. (from memory ranging from about 0.5 in the PW up to 2 degrees upright in the 3I) .... so it was time to do something about them, as they are just too upright for me thsee days. Im currently gaming the MP 57 and MP 32 combo set in the bag, all set at standard lie angles …. and have been for the last couple of months, so my swing has quickly gone from “upright with the 68’s” to a more flatter one with the 32’s (in order to compensate for the standard lie angles that I chose to game). So, a couple o hours ago …... I set off on the short trip around the corner from work, with my shiny, but currently idle MP 68’s … to see if Jon at TPG felt like doing a little “bending” today. Jon as always, was most accomodating, they really do bend over backwards for their customers, or in Jon’s case ….. he bends flat. So now, after lunch I’ll be able to head back on over and pick up my much flatter, but still pretty, MP 68 set. I’ve asked Jon if he could bend them all 2 degrees flatter than standard ….... and he said he’ll also check the lofts, to make sure they are consistent from club to club, etc. No doubt in Jon’s capable hands, I’ll end up with a perfectly matched set once again, and one that I’m really looking forward to trying out. It’s a bit of an experiment, but I figure if I can go from 2 deg upright down to standard lie angles, and pretty much cope okay with it after one or two hitouts at most …... then another 2 degree flatter again shouldn’t be too hard, should it? I figure that whatever clubs we have in our hands, our bodies can soon work out the best way to hit them anyway, in order to see something playable come out on the other side of the clubface. It’s all part of the master plan though, in order to get my big muscles working more, and to stop my hands from taking too much control of the clubface, which is at times ….... where I stuff up. Like some I guess, I can get a bit handsy at times, as I reckon (thru trial and many errors) ....... that it’s really the lazy man’s option in trying to work the ball ….... eg trying to make the hands roll thru quicker at impact to hit a draw, or to get them hold off thru impact in order to hit a fade. Basically I think I do it, because the rest of my body is too slack …. to do it all properly or consistently, and I’ve found that my hands can do it a touch better at this stage …....... but its a skill that I am not good enough to control as much as I want, or need, in order to improve my game further. On my good days, my hands can hit some bloody nice shapes, but on my bad days, they can be equally as destructive ….... so I’ve decided for the most part …....to try and “sack them” ..... for their inconsistency. So the less I involve the hands the better I think, and I’ll just try to get consistent in using the body more, and this hopefully, will help me to become more consistent. This of course …....... is all in line with the thoughts and teachings of Mr Bradley Hughes Esquire, whose works I have been reading on here, and other places, a fair bit of in recent times. With a much flatter swing, I shouldn’t stall on the way down into the ball which is what I feel I do at times with an upright swing, and then I have to use my hands to get the clubface where it needs to be. Hopefully instead, I should be able to use the rotation of my body to power the shot and as Brad says, keep the clubface on line for longer, without having to artificially manipulate it there. A lot of Brad’s teachings really seem to strike a chord with me though ...... eg, who gives a rats ass about pretty swings …... or an over emphasis on the techincal side of things …... its all really about impact and where the ball goes afterwards, and in general, in just using your body effectively …... and I like that. I’m not one for studying the minutae of the golfswing, I just “feel” what I’m doing and hopefully, in trying this out ….... l might just feel what a consistent golfswing is like. No doubt more on this in the future …... Wow, it’s almost time go get them ….... then go give them a belt later on somewhere ….. happy days. |

Topic: GPJ’s Journey to ... God Knows Where T’was a mere 31 for me yesterday Orbs …...... so a played to 12 pfft, will waste a spot on the golflink for the next 20 rounds. (It was the playing partners had a pair of 36’ ers) Beacy yesterday was right in the middle of the thin rain band that circled around the metro area …...... so while some areas escaped with just the odd shower, (including my place some 15 mins away) ........ the middle of that long thin band just kept circling around right over the course so we had constant rain for at least 5 or 6 hours. Speaking of which, with the upcoming house move, I seem to have misplaced a few new golf gloves (I’ve probably packed them away someplace safe) ...... so I might have to try and find them today, as I need to stock up now that winter is well and truly upon us. By the way …...... I did note your lack of 3W over in your thread, nicely done buddy. So you’ve dropped 3.5 in the last 11 games …..... see, you should play comp more often :-) |

Topic: GPJ’s Journey to ... God Knows Where I understand the wet gloves and everything else thing after yesterday at Sandhurst, Gaz. 36 is a great effort in wet conditions. Although I reckon Sandhurst was probably a bit drier than Beacy. And as for the 3W wielding madman….my favourite club didn’t even get a run yesterday. Driver all day. No wipes. Like you…36 points. Down to 21 now…so only 11 start from Frank on Sunday. Assuming yesterday gets entered into GL in time. I may have to give the SGA guy a call….... |

Topic: GPJ’s Journey to ... God Knows Where Update time from the weekend now …....... and it was very wet Sunday morning up at Beacy. I got there before the sun, and donned the rain gear and then wandered over to the clubhouse. Soon there was about half a dozen guys under the porch watching the steady rain come down, as we also watched the 9th green, and practice green, start to get covered in water. The rain showed no sign of abating, so one by one, most of the guys pulled the pin on the morning’s golfing. Wasa turned up then and hung around for a while, and I almost had him tempted enough to have a hit (thankfully Grumpy Mark had long since pulled the pin and departed). It looked for a little while after the sun had got up, that the rain was going to stop, but it just kept coming ….... and so a few of us remaining hardy souls bid Wasa a fond farewell as he headed on home, probably for a warm bed and a nice brekkie. A big social group turned up next, and after hanging around for fifteen minutes, decided they’d do a bit of team bonding over brekkie somewhere else …. so off they went. Meanwhile, after seeing the water on the 9th slowly start to dissapate and run back off the front of the green, three of us decided to give it a go, so we paid our comp fees, grabbed our clubs …... and off out into the rain we went (dickheads) ...... just before 8:00am. For Wasa’s benefit, it was big Jase, Tony the American and myself. A few other groups after seeing us hit off, decided to follow us, at a discreet distance … so there were at least 4 groups in the field, so let the games commence. I started with a good drive right down the middle (after my obligatory 3 practice swings), then pushed my iron approach shot some 20m short and wide. A handy lob shot with SW onto the green to about 15 feet …... and then I drained the long par saver on something of a “slightly moist” green. Thankfully there wasn’t the “formula one” like, plume of water, after the ball was sent on it’s way, but that did appear a few times, later on in the round. Onto the 2nd, and this green was slightly damp, with just the odd Koi pond laying about on it. I figured on the tee looking down at the water, that the best tactic was to avoid it completely . so I pushed my 3 iron just short and wide. I then had another chip of some distance, and managed to lob it over most of the puddles, and it dropped and rolled a few feet to stop within a foot of the flag ….... easy tap in par. And so it went for most of the front 9 holes. A lot of the green’s were pretty good, as they do slope a fair bit, so it was trying to get them to the dry sections, and thankfully, most of the pins were up the back half, so if you managed to get your ball right up there, it wasn’t too bad. Leave them short though, and you were pretty much stuffed, as you just had to belt them thru the water. The rain though, just kept coming down, and after a couple of holes, I was pretty much, as wet as I was going to get for the day. It was a round of “changing gloves”, and I got through 3 of them on the front 9 ….. and it should have been 4, after losing my drive leftward on the 9th, when I nearly lost hold of the club completely. I got through the front 9 though with 17 points, with the other guys in similar fashion, on or around their handicaps. The back 9 was much more of a struggle though, as I lost my tee shot on the par 5 10th way left, so that turned into a 1 pointer. I then followed it up with another 2×1 pointers on the next two holes, and then wiped the next hole, the short but tricky uphill par 3. So, 4 holes down and a grand total of 3 points …...... outstanding golfing. I had no dry golves left, so I was trying to recycle them, and to find a dry patch somewhere on my golf towel, both to no avail. Another 1 pointer followed, then I hit a nice tee shot on the short downhill par 3 15th, a gently fading 8 iron, which just cleared the river that had appeared running left to right thru the centre of the green. I just missed the birdie putt, but tapped in for my par, so two whole points suddenly leapt onto my scorecard. All three of us meanwhile had been in a race on every green. As most of the holes were full of water, when we sunk our putts, we’d just leave the ball there …. so whoever was last in, had to get them out of the freezing water. We also made it a rule that even if you wiped the hole and didn’t get to sink your putt …... you still had to get your hand wet by playing “ball bitch” for the others . so there was a good incentive to get it in fast. But back to the round, and I hit a nice drive on 16, despite being pretty much blinded by some sideways rain, then hit a great 8 iron approach shot up the hill and on, to about 15 feet . Meanwhile as the others struggled on the hole, I managed to drop the birdie putt firmly into the centre of the cup, for a 3 for 4 (handy). I then hit a nice drive on 17, then a half decent approach and more than a one pointer went onto the card again. On the lucky last, I hit a fading 3W as I lost the grip again, but it got a nice bounce off a tree, about 140m out from the green. I then hit a nice low 6I fade around the treeline, up and onto the front of the green ….. but then 3 putted as my first putt, although smashed, failed to get even halfway up to the back pin placement as the water plume rose two feet up in the air behind it (knew I should have chipped it from the front half of the green). Anyway …. I scored 14 on the back nine …. the best part though, was that we got thru the round and had some good fun going around, despite the constant rain, the odd patch of fog, the grey skies, the soaking conditions, and the freezing wet feet and body. So, I finished with a grand total of 31 points for the morning’s efforts, while my two playing partners both had solid 36 point games. I figure that 36 points off any handicap was pretty good going out there, as it certainly wasn’t easy at times, so they both played really well. Post round and it was home for a hot shower, some warm dry clothes, and a hot coffee, before heading out into the garage to sort out all the wet golf gear. It reminded my of sorting out the wet “footy gear” all those years ago. Still, we got to play and swing the clubs, and that is never a bad thing, whatever the conditions :-) |

Topic: GPJ’s Journey to ... God Knows Where
Interesting that you had a visit to the range, Gaz. They have done a little bit over the summer months and I’ll be interested to see how it holds up over winter…...if we get a lot of rain. Rees (Dr Sue’s son) is still working down there so I like to “visit” him when he’s working. ;-) (Some balls at a better rate usually fall my way.) Weekends are the best days. Just got back from Yarrawonga this arvo. Didn’t play great golf and yesterday was very poor…...so I’ve slipped to 9.6 At this stage I’m giving Godly 12 shots. :) Congrats on the 9 K posts, by the way. |

Topic: GPJ’s Journey to ... God Knows Where And speaking of the big move ….. and in packing up …...... I was taking a few more packed boxes out to the garage last night, and having a dart whilst there, and I happened to go over to the old club rack. I grabbed out one of my Mizuno MP 68 irons (the 5 iron) and after dusting off the clubhhead, had one or two practice swings with it. (The shiny, sleek 68’s have been out of the golf bag for a few months now, as I am mainly using their previous generation blade counterparts, the MP 32’s) Anyway, after a couple of gentle swings, I then put it down onto the concrete floor at the address position, and the toe of the club was sitting way up in the air, like some arabian dancing shoes. I’d forgotten that they were roughly 2 degrees upright … whereas the combo set I’m using at the moment (MP 57’s and 32’s) . are all set at “standard” lie angles. I then shifted my address position in towards the ball .... to where the toe finally sat flat on the ground, and thought to myself, christ, that just doesn’t feel right …...... it feels like I’d be hitting the ball right underneath my body. I think over time, we can tend to adjust our swings to whatever works with the clubs we’re trying to use ….. so in using standard lie angled clubs for the last few months, I have definitely flattened my swing plane out by a considerable degree (or two). I then grabbed another couple of the irons just to check that I wasn’t going blind, the 3 and PW to get both ends of the iron spectrum, and yes, both of them are definitely too upright for my liking now. Going back about 18 months ago when they were new, I got fitted for them by Garth at TPG, and they have progressive lie angles, starting at around 2 deg upright for my 3 iron, incrementing downwards thru the set to just a tick above standard for PW (from memory). That being the case ….... the MP68’s are now nowhere near what I would call ideal for my current swing. I really do like the clubs though, so I might take them into the boys at TPG once again, and get them to bend the bejeezus out of them …. this time, to err on the side of “flat”, I reckon. As I’m reasonably consistent with how the existing irons are going with their standard lie angles, I might go a degree or two flat for the MP 68’s (in line with the teachings of Gold Jacket Brad) just to experiment and see how my swing feels with them. With a lot going on though, I’ve just got to find the time to do it, but I think it could be good fun trying something different, so I’ll definitely get in touch with the guys and get it done soon, as they are just too nice to sit idle in the rack forever I reckon. |

Topic: GPJ’s Journey to ... God Knows Where Update time from last night’s practice session ….. and it was something a tad different last night, due to being a tad “time poor”, and some inclement weather. Instead of another trip up to Beacy, it was a huge bouquet of balls just down the road …..... at Frank’s Driving Range. It’s been ages since I’ve been to a range, and I must say, Frank has done some work on his place, and it seems to be a little bit tidier and in much better condition these days. So onto the practice and I started with some warm-up SW and GW work, hitting all sorts of shots with them, and then on thru the irons. Last night the irons were 9, 7, 5, and 3. Then it was hitting some 3W’s off the deck, followed by some tee shots with my Driver, and then hitting some drivers off the deck ….. well, off the mat anyway. With it being showery I didn’t venture out onto the grass, so it was just hitting off the mat. I was working mainly on my set-up and in hitting various shaped shots with my clubs, and they were all coming off pretty nicely. I wasn’t too concerned about where they went, but I didn’t kill anyone …. which is always a positive I reckon, at the driving range. So, I hit some left to right, and then right to left, some low ones, some high ones, and pretty much everything else I could think to try. Because I had bought a huge “bouquet of balls” (That reminds me, I need to speak to Frank about his prices …. $24 a bouquet, no wonder the bugger is always on holiday) ........... I finished up using the last 30 odd balls hitting them all at the 100m sign with everything from driver down to 7 iron. It was good fun for instance, in trying to hood and hook a low bullet of 3 iron, and I managed to slam a couple of nice ones into the sign almost at full pelt …........ so I should be right now if I ever need to hook a low 3 iron on course. It’s a slightly harder task to fade a low bullet with 3W, but bloody good fun nevertheless. So, last night was pretty much just a session to get some “feel” with my clubs, as it’s been a couple of days since I’d hit them, due to some crappy Melbourne weather, and in having other stuff on the plate. As The Beloved and I are about to move abodes in a week or two’s time, the official big truck moving day is in fact, the day before the Sandhurst Order Of Merit game. (how fresh am I going to be feeling for that game the next morning?) ........ things are pretty busy at home at the moment, in getting everything packed up and ready for the move ….... so golf is taking something of a back seat at the moment, and being fit in where it can. It was nice though, to go swing the clubs one more time before Sunday’s planned comp game up at Beacy (no golf tonight or Sat as it’s The Beloved’s birthday). |

His wallet was still in its infancy during that time. Doesn’t have the same pull-out power that it enjoys today. He should be advisor to the government on how to withdraw our troops from Afghanistan. They would all be home a lot sooner and better for it. |

If only Frank had of been in charge of the Vietnam conflict. Thousands of lives would have been saved. |

While the old Troll sleeps of a busy night, we can have our little moment of fun! I like the wallet reference Gaz, very nice. |
