Topic: GPJ’s Journey to ... God Knows Where Okay time now from this morning’s Stroke comp up at Beacy ….. and after a solid start, it pretty much descended into bogey golf for the remainder of the round. A lot of putts went close, but didn’t drop on the reasonably fast greens . and after a while I got a bit tentative on the putts, including a very nice four putt on the 10th. On in reg, and then hit the ground with the putter on the first long cross green putt …......... then putted the 2nd one a metre or so past the hole on the firmish green. Then went and just pushed the return 3 putt, and finally tapped in for a well compiled 4 putt, for a new high of 7.. The drives were also just missing there targets, and the game was done and dusted by about the 14th hole. Aside from crap at both ends of the hole, the irons were working and coming off the face pretty sweetly. It was just one of those days though …..... and another round that won’t threaten the scorers, or effect the handicap. Meanwhile Wasa was hitting a few very nice ones and a couple of ordinary ones . whereas grumpy bastard Mark was bitching and cracking the shites on every 2nd shot he hit ….... and its starting to give me the irrates. Fair enough if you’re down on yourself, but get the hell over it, and stop carrying on like a dickhead and spoiling it for the rest of the playing group I reckon. Aside from his multitude of tantrums, it was a good day out with Wasa and Pete on Beacy. None of us tore the course a new one, but some handy shots were struck during the round. Finished with a grand total of 84 off the stick, so a net 78 . wow, impressive, not. Oh well, onward and upward ….. and Monday its time to try out another driver setting I reckon, as well as keep working on the HiFli. I hit a couple of nice ones with the HiFli, and also stuffed a couple, when I was a bit too optimistic in hitting it off some dubious lies, particularly downhill lie or when it was sitting in a depression. Another lesson learned though, so it’s all good, and I’ve got lots of work to do on just about everything but my irons ….... so driver, chipping, and putting this week. |

Topic: GPJ’s Journey to ... God Knows Where Update time now, and first up, it was a game on Anzac Day at Yarrambat with Georgy Boy, CB80, Benny, and the rest of Godly’s Yarrambat mafia. Partnered with Georgey Boy ….... with CB and Benny making up our group, and I had “one of those days”. While my driving was off, I was trying to hit a lot of hybrids, in order to get a handle on it, but it just wasn’t working. It was more mental than physical though, as some days you are really into it, and the golf brain is switched on, but it was like my mind was working through treacle, as it just wasn’t sharp or really focussed, and it showed in my golf. As I said to the others, I just wasn’t feeling the love. Georgey Boy though played very nice and solid golf, whilst CB was really on his game, firing at every pin and having a lot of birdie chances which he was sinking well. Benny was driving very nicely off the tee, but then like me, the rest of his game was just a tad off. Some days being just a tad off is all it takes …..... miss a fairway by a couple of feet, or a green by half a club, or a putt by a foot or two etc. It was good fun though, and I got to watch each of the guys hit some great shots, as well as have a laugh with Godly and the crew post round. Friday, and it was back up to Beacy, and again, early on, I just wasn’t feeling it. Started on the back 9 of the Hills, and then down to play the Lakes course. Played the first 6 holes or so like crap (just wasting a shot on each hole) ...... then turned it around when the brain eventually snapped in, and I got out of the “funk” I’d been in for a couple of days. It started about halfway, when I birdied 15, parred 16, birdie 17, par 18, then off to the Lakes. Parred 1, 2, 3, birdied 4, birdied 5, parred 6, 7, 8, and then birdied the 9th. It was nice to get back onto the greens at Beacy …. they were a fair bit faster and shorter than Yarrambat’s ….. and a hell of a lot quicker than Heidelberg’s …. and I think I putt better on quicker greens. So, “stroke” to look forward to tomorrow up at Beacy with Wasa, where every shot counts, and I really like that. I reckon every game should be stroke, as it’s the only really fair way to play the game, so I can’t wait, after a day off of golf today. |

Quite right Frank. It was probably a year, 18 months ago now, when I finally thought stuff it, I’d rather write down a decent score than occasionally having the shortest shot left into the green. Much easier to be hitting your second from the fairway and in having a clear shot of the green. I must admit though, I don’t mind hitting a long one out there at times, but I hate it when they don’t end up on the short stuff, so more often than not I’m lowering my eyes a touch these days.. Getting the ball in the hole quickly is more fun these days I reckon. |

Hey VC …...... Lets see now, top 3 … my aim was to finish one behind Frank …...... and I did that nicely finishing with 35 to his 36. (Wasn’t my fault he didn’t win it) As for LD . I think it about a month ago I said I wasn’t going for it, so if you missed that ….... not really my problem :-) Thanks for the birthday wishes too . it was a great quick trip, seems like ages ago already sadly …... but as always, Ihad a great time on my b’day with The Beloved. 2 Very nice courses too VC ….. so if you haven’t gotten around to playing them, as Molly would say “Do yourself a favour” .... as you’d enjoy them no doubt. A bit like our own MP courses, but a little more scenic, and with not a dud hole on either of them. |

Topic: ISG Vic OOM#2 - Heidelberg GC, 21st April 2013 I enjoyed the day out at bendigo last year… Except for the fact it took our group about 8 hours to finish. Got back to the clubhouse just intime to see someone finish the last bit if bee sting. If I can fit it into my busy schedule of doing as little as possible on weekends, I’m in. |

ha ha. I think Peaksy got very unlucky that day. I was actually getting off the tee pretty well. I remember looking at him after one of my drives and he was just shaking his head :) At 13th beach I couldn’t get off the tee to save myself. And then come the back 9 I decided to just start hitting it harder and bingo. |

Topic: GPJ’s Journey to ... God Knows Where A quick update form last nights practice, and it was a pretty rushed affair after finishing work a bit later yesterday. I managed to play holes 1, 7, 8, and 9, using a couple of balls on each hole. The main point was just in hitting a few off the tee with both Driver, and my Mizuno HiFli 17 deg club in order to try and get both on track. While the driver was solid and reliable once again, the HiFli was a little harder to come to terms with. It performs a bit like my 3W in that when I try to play straight, probably half the time the resultant ball flight has a slight draw flavour, so I need to be mindful to aim up the left with it. The only time it really goes the other way, is when I lean back on the shot, or play with a deliberate open club face. Perhaps my natural swing is just to draw the ball slightly these days, or it may have something to do with the club’s inbuilt offset, which allows the clubface that extra poofteenth of time, in order to rotate thru to just a fraction closed at impact. Either way, it seems to be fairly consistent in the shape of shot I’m seeing out of it, eg, straight or slightly left to right …....... but I still can’t hit a high one with the thing. I can certainly catch the ball just below the centre of gravity on the club though …....... and hit some bloody long and low bullets with it. It’s going to be a very good club in that regard, for when the wind is up, or I need to get a bit if run on a shot, so it certainly will have its uses. I’ll just have to spend a bit more time with it, in order to work out how to hit a high soft landing shot with it. I’m now playing tomorrow out at Royal Yarrambat with Godly and co …. so the HiFli will be in the bag, and I might try and use it on a couple of holes instead of driver. It’s been a while since I’ve played there, so I’m looking forward to it, as I really enjoy the course, and always have fun on it. |

Topic: GPJ’s Journey to ... God Knows Where
Hey Scotty, My ball positions tend to float with each club, depending on what shot I’m trying to hit at the time, as well as taking into account what slope I’m hitting off (particularly up at Beacy) Beacy’s a great training ground for that, as there isn’t a flat lie on the course as you know, so I can hit say a 6 iron fade, with two or three different ball positions depending on the varying slope of the lie I’m on. In having constant variables like that, it certainly keeps the brain working. I think in doing that, the one benefit we’re legally allowed, is in having a practice swing. Normally I’m just try to feel the right swing with an iron in hand, and nothing else, but when faced with a shot that I’m not totally sure of, I’ll deliberately take a divot on the practice swing … just to see which way it’s pointing, and where the strike zone is etc. From there it’s a good indication of what I need to do in terms of ball position, and how I need to set up for the shot ahead of me. (Not sure the grondstaff appreciate the extra patch of sand sitting around on the course, but I don’t do it often) For the push slice, you’ve pretty much described what I try to do . stay square, ball forward, On the LD hole at Heidelberg on Sunday though I did that but had the face square and the ball not quite far enough forward …. shame the hole dog legged left, as the ball went dead straight and I hit it right out of the guts ….... reload time :-) With my 3W off the above the feet slightly uphill lie ….. you told me a while ago how to play the shot, in that …....... I actually need to aim right of the green instead of left, due to the uphill part of the calculation overriding the sideslopes impact. When I’ve done that aimed right of the green, good things happen, when I feel I aim at the green, I squirt it leftward. It’s a mind over matter situation I reckon, and I need to have a fair bit of trust involved in the shot, as “logic” tells me it’s going to go further right. I really just need to clearly assess which is going to have the most impact, uphill or sideslope, and then pick the starting line accordingly. As for Operation Frank and Desert Storm ….. I can’t recall playing on greens that sandy, ever. It wasn’t helped by the early start, as it reminded me of many years ago when I used to play up at Olinda, and we played a round while it was snowing. As always Scotty, you’ve helped to clarify a few things in my head, and given me more food for thought … so thanks for that buddy ….... much appreciated. |
