Topic: When is it OK to pick up?

The aim of golf is to get it into the hole, not near it!

I think that ends the argument.

You cannot record a score for a hole in a competition round (other than matchplay) without the ball dropping into the hole. Full-stop. Fail to hole out with a legal stroke, tee off on the next hole and you must record a 0 for the hole in stableford, a loss in par, and a DQ for the round in stroke.

Any players and markers that tolerate conceded putts (gimmes) in comps other than matchplay should be DQed. You are implicitly agreeing to waive a rule of golf.

Obviously the situation with social rounds is a different matter. The art of conceding you manager 6 feet putts when he’s 2 down is well understood as one of the age old traditions of golf.

Reverse every natural instinct you have and do just the opposite of what you are inclined to do and you will probably come very close to having a perfect golf swing. – BEN HOGAN, POWER GOLF

One other; a card handed in which has had a “gimmie” recorded as a score is auto DQ for player and marker.

Topic: When is it OK to pick up?

I do not play competition, however, when playing socially, apart from enjoyment of playing with mates, i use it more for practice. I still always putt out for practice, no matter what the distance for practice purposes.

I’ve been playing once a week for a few months now to try and improve, to hopefully one day obtain some type of handicap.

I had an interesting experience a couple of weeks ago when I played at Growling Frog. I rocked up for my first time playing there and got put in a group with two young guys playing a competition that day (stableford). (Yes!- I was completly shocked and horrified at that news – my game is pretty ordinary. A G.I.R on the first hole of the day thankfully calmed my nerves, but still had some really hacker holes).

I learnt a lot about golf that day, both guys had a handicap of around 14. One of the young guys however could not putt. And to accentuate his problem every time he got on the green and had a bad putt he’d crack it and say ‘hate my putting’ or ‘i’m so sick of this’.... mind you I have to say that if he calmed down and concentrated for a second, he would’ve putted much better, as he was putting alot worse than me (a weekend hacker).

If I was in his position, I would’ve taken a breather, ‘put my head down’ so to say and used every single putt to address the problem.

Why pick the ball up?- especially when you are struggling to putt to begin with. I always putt out, in hope that one day, everything up to 6 or so feet will be rock solid.

anyway, that is my extremely naive 2 cents worth…

I play in a social group and the only time gimmes are given is when someone chips to within 300 mm and have not chipped with their putter. Trouble is the bad putters start wanting it be given longer and longer. I prefer to putt out unless it is just about in the cup. Never ever in comp though.

I think it is fine to pick up when you are single and there is alcohol and women in the mix.

I would have thought that in competition there is no such thing as gimmes. Gimmes should be reserved for the social hit. Avoid the problem in the first place and play to the rules in competition!

Matchplay when your opponent tells you or in stableford if you have wiped the hole unless “snakes” are being played are the only times you can have a gimme except if it is social and all bets are off.But that’s the way we have alway’s played it and I have never been given a putt over 3 inches.

In Stableford competitions you can only pick up after you can no longer score a point otherwise you are disqualified for failing to play out a hole.

Not so Hybrid.

Failure to hole out is Rule 3-2, and does have a DQ penalty in STROKE PLAY.

However, Stableford is a modified form of stroke play that does not require holing out on each and every hole. If you do pick up (when you could still have scored a point or more) you are actually only DQ for that hole.

Rule 32-2a lists the ways you are DQ for an entire stableford competition, and breaching R3-2 is not one of them.

However, it doesn’t seem kosher to pick up when you can still score points. If someone lodged a complaint to the committee – especially if the competitor in question was scoring pretty well for the day – maybe they would like to talk to the player, and consider invoking R33-7, or consider sanctions via club regulations.

Cheers

At no time is a “gimmie” allowed under the rules of golf, either individually or as a group concensus, any person or group who participates in “gimmies” are by defininition of the rules disqualified.
A friend ( Barry ) playing in a 4 ball had a side bet as happens with the other group, at one hole, one of the other team had a 2-3’ putt for par and his mate knocked the away and called “gimmie”, when quizzed as to what he was doing, he stated that the bloke never misses those putts.
Futher on Barry’s partner had a 8’ putt where by Barry knocked the ball away and called “gimmie”, the othe team went of their collectives heads, Barry said his partner always gets those putts and asked where in the rules does it limit at what distance from the hole gimmies can’t be taken. cheers peter

Never in a club competition. Why would it be?

You just cant do this during comp rounds !! Different if you are playing with a group of mates in a social round though… Lets not change the rules of Golf here – the ball must remain in the bottom of the hole for the hole to be complete and a score recorded.

You can pick up the ball whenever you wish. The worst they can do is DQ you.

If you are playing a Stableford round in either a club or Social competition with prizes at the end and several groups (up to 20 odd blokes)playing, when is it OK to pick your ball up and allow yourself a ‘gimme’.

That is absolute BS taking gimmies anything outside 1 foot. Gimmies should only be taken if they are offered and they should not be suggested, but they are only ever offered if the ball is less than 1 foot.

Topic: When is it OK to pick up?

In matchplay you can concede anything to your partner- it is your choice. If however you pick your ball up without it being conceded by your oponent, you are in effect deciding not to complete the hole and thus conceding it to your oponent – you go 1 down.

I think you meant to say you can conceed anything to your OPPONENT?

If you pick up your ball without a concession being granted, you actually would incur a penalty stroke if for some reason you had to continue the hole.

A concession should be made verbally – so don’t just pick up your ball and walk away – you should say something to the effect to your opponent that you conceed the hole.

In anything other than matchplay – the concept of concession simply does not exist. You can say you concede a putt, but it is meaningless as you have no right to say this. Only one fact remains, if you pick you ball up, you incur a penalty, and if you then tee off from the hole without having replaced your ball and holed out, you are disqualified.

You are correct in your assertion that outside of match play, concessions do not exist.

In stroke play, if you do not hole out, and tee off on the next hole, you will have to be DQ for not having a valid score. However, in par & stableford, by picking up you are not returning a score for the hole. You can pick up 18 times if you want, and return a score of 0 points….
