Topic: Golf Classifieds / WTB Callaway FT3 10 degree Probably not. However the wife has an 11 degree FT3 and we are looking for a slightly lower ball flight -hence 10 degree. The gap from 11 – 9.5 is probably taking things a bit to far. |

Topic: Sports Talk / Thorpe Quits Maybe he is not a sook. However it is hard for Australians to see a guy with world beating talent but no remianing drive simply give up. As it is Thorpe is a great Australian Olympian but he is not a global great -probably on the next tier (around 12 swimmers have won as many or more golds than Thorpe at the Olympics). I suppose for many that is a slight disappointment. |

Topic: Sports Talk / Worst Australian Cricket Captains I accept that Ponting has made what appear to be some errors in his reign so far. And whilst I have nothing to back it up I wouldn't be surprised if many of the greats have -however with the passage of time they tend to be forgotten. I simply object to the bagging of the current team and captain by those who have history's rose coloured glasses on. Some also seem to forget that Mcgrath is now an old man and a medium pacer and Warnie talks more spin than he bowls. And yet Ponting continues to deliver. |

Topic: Sports Talk / Worst Australian Cricket Captains Sorry I can't believe some of you guys can rate Border a great and bag Ponting. There is no right answer or way to go about it but comparing records of consecutive captaincy gives an insight. Border had a win ratio of 34% with pretty much the same team as Taylor who led the team to a 52% win ratio. Poor old Ricky is leading his team to victory in a mere 73% of all games. Bag him all you like for some one off issues but his record stands for itself. By the way S Waugh -the greatest captain of all time -has a win percentage of 72%. Whilst numbers can be used to support different arguments for different people for me its about winning -afterall sport is a contest. |

Topic: Golf Talk / High markers winning comps It doesn't piss me off however it is a fact of life that if you get to low single figures your days of winning stableford events are long gone. Go play something with a scratch prize if you are interested in winning at that point. |

Topic: Your Favourite Golf Courses / Changing Par For Stroke Events MM, Understand my list comprised only of courses which I have played. Whilst I understand your comments about how to judge quality I make this broad statement (I am a in the property industry). A beautiful old building that is in a poor state of repair is for most considered to be of less value than a less asthetically pleasing but much more comfortable modern building. However, ask an architect and they would vote for the old building irrespective of the fact that 95% of people don't agree with them. Well a sunny day and a well kept challenging course is todays glass high rise. Old, small, poorly maintained classics are the province of the afficianado -of which I am not one -but quite a few ISGers are. |

Topic: Your Favourite Golf Courses / Changing Par For Stroke Events JJJ and MM, One of the issues with posting a list of 20 courses which I consider better than Newcastle is that it gives everyone 20 chances to have a go at me. Despite that risk I gave it a run. Yes I understand that within that list of twenty are some contraversial picks however as I alluded to in a prior post sometimes that relates to the situation in which you played (recognising some of these courses I played a while ago). Two examples which have been picked up -Cape Schanck -spent 10 days on the Mornington playing a dozen different courses. The weather as a rule sucked but we had a cracker of a day at Cape Schanck and a really enjoyable round -this probably clouds my judgement but I was honest enough to put it in there despite the obvious criticism it would cop. - Secret Harbour -we played it 5 years ago when it was relatively new and in fantastic shape. I thought it was a great top 50 course -it may have suffered lately but then I haven't seen it in 5 years. Regarding RM I played E and W maybe 6 years ago and hence simply cannot make any reasonable comment about its current state. However, I have previously asked the question about its possibly dwindling greatness and if its greens regularly suck this can only add further to that question. |

Topic: The Lounge / Al Gore's Movie - 'An Inconvenient Truth' All things in the media are highly prejudiced by the barrow they are pushing -no more so than the green movement. Remember that cutting down forests is a large contributor to CO2 buildup and global warming. But No that is incorrect -mature forests actually are CO2 negative (i.e. they use more than they emit). So I await Saint Al's support of the forestry industry who obviously should be making tapping into the market for those CO2 credits. PS I first heard the tree CO2 thing from Doctor Karl so it must be right. |

Topic: Your Favourite Golf Courses / Changing Par For Stroke Events May I complete the conversation by saying a couple of things: 1. a number of you act like I said Newcastle is one of Australia's worst courses -that is not correct. I simply don't believe it is Top 20 material. Top 50 absolutely. 2. Moe listed some of the positives about the course -I completely agree with him. 3. Spend som cash on the Newcastle and complement the positives Moe noted and Newcastle will roar into any Top 20 analysis. Some of the responses for the Archie fraternity very much remind of education professionals -technically correct but debatable in the "real world". Where you place emphasis (technical / reality) is how you will perceive these arguments. As Tithers said its a matter of personal opinion -the fact that variances in opinion are often stomped on at ISG is one of the disappointments this site. |

So you rank Royal Melbourne well behind Newcastle and in fact barely top 100. Less drama and more intelligence would add to the discussion. Anyway off home now have a good evening all. |

Topic: Your Favourite Golf Courses / Changing Par For Stroke Events Before someone asks I think the more informative list is courses I would rate behind Newcastle. And no this is not exhaustive but it gives you some ideas.
1. Every A grade course in Sydney not mentioned in the above post
including my home track. woops gotta go the wife is calling. PS Andrew sorry for highjacking your thread!
Moe,
Warts and all mate -as I said I liked Cape Shanck -it was a
respite from the never ending wastelands that are the links
courses of the Mornington -maybe it was because it was the only
day the sun shined in 2 weeks while we were their! |

Topic: Your Favourite Golf Courses / Changing Par For Stroke Events Ok, after much demand here it is -Miro's top 20 (that I have played) that I think are better than or at least equal to Newcastle -excuse the obvious courses left out as it simply says I haven't played them.
1. RM west So there you go -not in any particular order and only courses I have played. But all would be courses I would play again before Newcastle on a given day. If Newcastle won Lotto and took some advice from Andrew on some pruning and some minor rerouting I could easily wipe off half those courses. But alas I don;t think Lotto tickets are in the club budget. |

Now now Moe don't misquote me. I asked the question whether it was outdated, much as I have asked it about Portsea. However, the Melbourne intelligensia of course design seem incapable of having a dsicussion with recognises that technology has outdated, or threatens to outdate, many of our classic courses. Ignoring the 2,000 pound gorilla in the middle of the room does not make that gorilla any less real.
AA, I have played much links golf, at least the Australian version, I wasn't aware that poor green conditions (mixed grasses, mixed speeds) was a pre-requisite of this most arcane version of the game. Obviously all those fancy courses on Mornington need to get their act in to gear and start letting their greens deteriorate. |

Topic: Your Favourite Golf Courses / Changing Par For Stroke Events StA, Nice dodge -so when did you last play it and what have you got to say about my other comments? When I ahve a moment I will list 20 courses I have played that are better (let alone the great courses I have not played which would ecedd it). I do agree that with a load of cash that the course is fantastc -the reality is that it does not have access to that load of cash. |
