Topic: Vision Golf Ball Test

Hi CB, thanks for the update, yes good info as usual and the
full blown tour ball in painted white just very old school on course
as well.

Hi Tenacious, ok the initial reply has to be no ,,,,not yet.

As the Vision range has developed I started with full game
improvement type performance aiming at players that I thought
would trust my Vision designs more than the lower markers that
would not even look at Yellow to start with as the words Range
/ Ladies / Novelty were thrown around a lot.

Where we stand today is coloured balls ( not all good colours
mind you ) are very popular in Japan and Yellow is gaining
popularity through Srixon’s ad campaign but male Tour players
in the top 200 will still probably not support colour that is unless
there is some real money paid.

But on the Ladies / Seniors / and 2nd tier Tours Yellow is finding
a place so over time I feel it will find plenty of better players or
aspirational type players that will want a Premium type version.

I have come close with my latest prototypes like the 888 and the
PT UV so sooner than later I should have something but it is a
work in progress.

Cheers,
Boz

Hi Ben,

Sorry I’ am looking at the last two 888’s on my desk till
the next test batch are produced.

The problem is that I have some very good balls waiting in
the wings but not enough players are keen to try them and
as such I am looking at whether I need to move to the US
to continue my chase to create enough of a player base
that will support my design efforts.

Thanks again,
Boz

benno, if you are hitting the ball like that, how on earth are you a 20 HC???

I’d like to say I am a top class Burglar!! But the main reason is I work FIFO, and for ever week I get at home practising, I spend 3 weeks in the middle of nowhere not practising. For example, my week home I get 3 rounds in and they went 98, 106, 90. By the end of my week home I get my groove back, only to lose it all over the next 3 weeks.

In fact, I would only say I got my groove back for those last 6 holes, and that is by far and away the best I have ever played them.

Still waiting for an offer of a dozen 888’s by the way Boz… (kidding, but happy to pay retail of course….)

Cheers,
Ben

>I am convinced that I am on the right path and this has to be
better than you as players just buying what the Pro’s play
because it is almost promoted that they some how know
better when they don’t play golf like you.

To be honest they don’t know what products are better for
your game because they don’t care about your game, they
are focused on their own game and playing it better than they
currently do. The same goes for the low markers at your home
club they don’t need to know anything about Game Improvement
designs and their effect on a regular players overall game.

What do you think? I am just looking at it from a marketing
perspective and trying to understand why so many players
are buying the wrong gear for their skill set.

Hi Boz
A lot of mid to high handicappers and even low markers around 8 -10 mark that I play with use Pro V’s because they honestly believe that playing a better ball will make them better players.

When asked why they choose Pro V’s, its because they think they will get better spin around greens, despite fact that they dont have the swing skill to compress the ball and generate spin that way particularly on half wedge shots and chips.

The other issue is most club players consistently use a high lofted club for chipping and standard shot is to throw up a chip with 60 degree wedge and expect it to stop dead when in fact a low running chip with low spin and roll out will work much more effectively.
Most see Phil hit the high spinning wedge and want to do same.

In other words golfers want the ball to spin for them, but they dont know how to impart spin or take spin off the ball in first place.

Hardly any know that a high spinning ball also spins more to side on not so good hits. Most struggle for control of ball off tee.

Truth is unless play all golf on rock hard greens, then a soft pro v will give no better spin than a firmer cover ball on soft greens, particularly now in winter coming on.

putting feel, lets be honest, if have an insert in face of putter this makes the ball feel softer anyway and lots using Pro V’s come up short.

The message is playing a premium tour ball wont suddenly make you a better player.

Hi Boz
just wanted you to know that I used an X3 white ball to win 5 out of 6 pennant matches this year.

I am a 8 handicap and still find the X3 to be a great ball for control.
particularly in the wind, and when greens got a little slower in wet the feel of X3 was the best for click on chips.

distance wise I hit it 215 to 220m consistantly with driver and when I wanted to hit a controlled fade the ball stayed there.

Not sure where the X3 is in your future range but for me this is a great ball.

currently trialling it against Srixon Q star

Hi Boz,

I have been trying out a few different yellow balls, so I can see the ball flight. My eye sight is not the best and I can not play with glasses, so I thought I should try a yellow ball, haven’t really liked any yet.

I was just wondering if you have any balls similar to a PRO V1 that I should try.

Im still trying out balls, looking for “the one” but the yellow vision balls rank right up there. Especially off the tee I find they trvel long but are pretty forgiving off misses

Might be able to have another bash with the 888 ball as I have been informed that the black mongrel thing with a liking for yellow balls has found a dislike to ….... and is no longer troubling the users ….

The 4 holes I used it for last weekend I thought it was on the money so time will tell…

Hi Ben,

Thanks for the detailed post, it really helps with all the info being
both valid and valuable from a design perspective. :-)

This is yet again why I love the Test Pilot team approach as so
many of you have been sharing balls with other players to give
me the chance to possibly find a new convert to Vision, thanks
to Node and thanks to all of you as sharing the love is very
much a part of my approach to life.

Ok, here is a couple of thoughts, Titleist continue to promote
the ProV1 as the best ball for all players in their ball fitting
system and to that end so do all the other brands nowadays.

But I don’t agree, here we have the 888 it is a Premium Multi-
layer design with a TPU Flexi-Gel Spin cover that is aimed
NOT at the Tour player types but at the Club player that wants
to play the BEST ball for their type of game.

The 888 unfortunately is not finished yet for mass production
but it is a great design that over the next few months more of
you will get a chance to trial for me.

I am convinced that I am on the right path and this has to be
better than you as players just buying what the Pro’s play
because it is almost promoted that they some how know

Topic: Vision Golf Ball Test

I put my first effort into actually trialling a proto ball, and comparing what difference it made to me.

I played the first 12 holes on Wednesday comp using a standard Artic White that Node gave me. This ball was ok, but I didn’t notice much difference to the Gel.

I wasn’t playing so well, so I decided to put the 888 (yellow) into play for the first time. For the last six holes, I managed to be +3 (very happy as a 20 capper, and the last 6 on Maryborough is a tough stretch).

For the first time in a long time I had a ball that was:
1. Long and straight off the tee – I averaged about 10m longer per drive, plus a found the fade I normally play became barely noticeable. All drives in play on the fairway.

2. Holding greens – I played shots into the green from a variety of lengths (55 – 185m) and EVERY shot landed on the green, and stopped on the green! This for me is only an occasional occurrence, so i was very pleased with this aspect of the ball. I was especially pleased on the the 185m par 3 (affectionately known as “The Wrecker”. I launched a 4 iron into the heart of the green, and the ball only rolled out 3m from its pitch mark. This is unheard of for me. Normally I’d be lucky to get less than 5m of roll from a 7 iron.

3. Putting – putting feel was excellent, and the sound off my Versa was spot on. Capitalised on my great tee shot on The Wrecker to record my first ever birdie there on a 6m putt.

So it begs the question – how do I get hold of more 888 balls?

Thanks Boz for the great ball, and Node for giving me a few different balls to try.

Cheers,
Ben

No it will be more tripping as the US market is really keen to
see where I am heading next with the ball designs and I look
like I can get better market support there as they can see the
value in the bright approach plus they have no Crows.

Hi Guys,

Just got off the phone to a new contact in regards to our UV
technology, it looks like we might be able to work with another
Australian company to bring the UV White and UVEE projects
to market using the latest materials that are being developed
by Australians for the world market.

Happy times! Cheers, Boz

He is excited, again or still….

Thought of the day, can nano particles be used to contain an effing crow repellent without effecting the ball???

Hi FB, the idea of SS for balls fitting is not a part of the way
I look at fitting balls and most of the other brands are not
looking at this as much especially when you hear they are
suggesting ProV1’s are the best ball for everyone if you are
prepared to pay the price.

The better ball designs are working much more efficiently for a
wider swingspeed range of players nowadays.

what I do see is that players are using feel as one of their main
criteria for choice with overall distance being so close with most
balls in the 85 to 105 core compression zone.

The MonsterBall Long Drive guys have shown that a 75
compression smart multilayer design will go as far as any
other ball they have tested, the Gel V series UV Yellow has
been really effective in competition.

The Gel X is firmer / The Gel is softer and the Bear Ball that
we have been testing is Softest.

PT 2.0 will be on hold for a little while as e will trial the new
UV White version next,,,,, I hope that is.

No it will be more tripping as the US market is really keen to
see where I am heading next with the ball designs and I look

Hi FB,

you’re welcome,,,,, you asked a very good question that I have
spent plenty of time looking into over the years seeing there are
now so many AAA type 2nd hand balls on the world market.

The big OEM’s don’t really want to talk about these type of issues.

Topic: Vision Golf Ball Test

Hi FB,

What you see with many tour balls is a very light slick silicone type
final lacquer coating, this helps to protect these balls from moisture
penetration that is in the air, whilst they are sitting in storage before being bought by you.

Years ago Taylor Made proved that this type of moisture could
have a negative affect on a balls overall performance,,,,
speed / distance / spin and think small but real in scientific terms.

They packaged their Premium models in a special plastic tube to
help stop this damage but they also made their balls very expensive like when the Penta’s were first released, without the right market penetration they failed to get players at the time but the story was a good one.

Here is the issue with second hand water/lake sourced 2nd hand AAA balls,,,,,,

if you play say ProV1’s you will have noticed the really slick
coating wears off after a few holes, and before the latest versions
which have a new paint system the paint would start to oxidise
pretty quickly and be stain which made the balls start to look dull
and off white.

This lack of lacquer also allows the cover to absorb more moisture
and most ball losses tend to occur during a round after being both
hit and then landing and rolling on the grass, soil etc that wears
it off which means the balls will not have a decent amount of
lacquer left on them to slow the moisture penetration,,,,,,

Once the cover has been compromised it will never play as well
as it was designed to. Depending on the amount of moisture that
has been absorbed and the time it has remained wet there will be
a reduction in all areas of performance and durability even after
the balls have been properly dried.

How much is these changes,,,,,, mainly small is probably the right
answer in general terms but if I was a good player it is enough that
I would not want to trust that piece of equipment because I would
be a player that needed the ball to do what I expected it to and
that is why I would also be playing a Premium Tour Urethane
design in the first place.

I hope the story is of interest.
Cheers,
Boz

Hi ST,

If the balls are found on course they should be ok and the look
of them will give you a pretty indication of their condition.

If they are from a water hazard and had sat there for 24 hours
or more then they are probably good for practice rounds or
practice but they are compromised, all the balls are some what
porous and do absorb moisture affecting the cover.

Tour balls with RIM Urethane covers are the most affected by water, ProV1 / Penta / Lethal ,,,,,,,

Boz

Could you elaborate on the ‘compromised’ aspect? I have always been curious whether 2nd hand balls, especially those from water hazards would play as well. Which part of the ball characteristic would be most affected? i.e. distance, spin?
