Topic: Golf Talk / What's YOUR top 5 Favourite Golfers at this moment ?

OK, let’s get real people. Woods inspires like no other…he’s my fave. Palmer – the people’s man. Hogan – the benchmark of those aspiring to become professional golfers. Nicklaus – the epitome of a successful golfing career. Els – who doesn’t love that ‘big-easy’ swing? Finally, Lee Trevino / Jim Furyk – for the unorthodox brilliance that these two have brought to the game!

Got our man! Reminds me of a ‘Benny’ Gale type to play ruck/forward. Like how hard at it he is when the ball hits the deck too.

Axl seems to have aged pretty well. Dunno how the voice has fared though. Anyone know if Slash’s still on lead guitars?

Gold Ditty! I think we’re all “He-man Woman Haters” once in a while. Ever heard this song from Extreme? A blast from the past for those hard-rock fans. Bye the way….....anyone heard any of the new GNR album just released?

Topic: Golf Talk / Confirmed Australian Masters to Move From Huntingdale

Is it Adam Scott that won’t play at Huntingdale and has anyone heard his thoughts in regard to why it’s not one of his faves? He seems to support the rest of the events on the Australasian tour calender, so maybe it’s a case of Huntingdale being his least favourite and him skipping the event to squeeze in some R&R whilst back home.

Bad luck for the king of ‘fairways hit’. Hope Nick will return asap with that half-swing waggle we love so much.

Yeah…..well done. In fact I reckon’ it’s a bit of a cliche that you have to take one step back to go 2 steps forward. In the past I have always responded with remarkable ball striking progress having adopted a change in regard to grip/set up/swing. Sure it might take a session or two down at the range to become comfortable with such changes, but once that change becomes routine it’s usually impossible to return to such bad habits. The bottom line…....each time I spend any length of time with a pro or scratch marker it reminds me of the importance of having someone look out for your game.

Chill…........Huntingdale’s monopoly on the Masters is officially over. From next year we’ll be able to spend countless hours watching the who’s who of golf bashing balls on the practice fairway. Hopefully at Kingston Heath.

Topic: Golf Equipment / Ping i10s or Mizuno Mp 57s?

Thanks for all the feedback. I regard myself as an average ball- striker, definitely not a flusher. I’m leaning towards the i10s for this reason. I hear people talk about Ping clubs being ‘workmanlike’ and that might be just what I need in an iron. I have certainly found the sweet-spot regularly with the 6-iron demo (not fitted). I suppose I just need to demo the MP57s and see if I can hit them consistently well. If sweet contact is made, it will be a flip of a coin I reckon.

Topic: Golf Talk / Defence Force Golf

Cheers. I know I’ll get the opportunity to play certain individual tournaments on an annual basis, but I suppose I was wondering most about how stiff the competition was for spots in different teams. How much golf could I expect to play at 11 handicap? Any chance of representing the ADF internationally against other nations’ defence forces or at the Arafura Games for example?

It’s a wild shot I know, but have any ISG members represented the Australian Defence Force in the sport of golf? I’m on the brink of being accepted into the Army and am keen to compete in tournaments once commissioned to my role.

Topic: Your Favourite Golf Courses / New Sandhurst Champions Course

Just finished playing 4 rounds in the Victorian Mid-Amateur. Really enjoyed the challenge. Expected it to be windy being so exposed. No surprises there. Fairways are good but still immature and lack of spring rain means they are a suffering a bit. Found the greens big, undulating, hard and fast. Players who are skilled at running their ball up to the pin will score better. Given the challenging contours, difficult pin positions make aggressive play a dangerous option and players who fancy themselves as good lag putters will have the edge here. Long Par 3 195m 6th hole is my most memorable hole and will probably become the course’s signature hole. A water carry of some 170 odd meters, played into the wind this hole is well um…....intimidating. Green is set back in between some mighty gums for the added visual thrill. Check it out on the Sandhurst website. I hit 5wood/3 wood into the wind in all 4 rounds. Hit in regulation 4 out of 4. Walked away with 2 pars only. I guess when you’re staring down the barrell of a 60 footer, you’re in 3 putt territory.

Topic: Golf Talk / Melbourne Publicv Access + Comp

They do. And if you join their ‘Saturday club’ in return they will handle your handicap through Golflink and give you access to Saturday tee times. This will only set you back $150-$200 odd. Ring and ask them about their club. Despite being labelled ‘public access’ these courses run comps for their Saturday regulars. You might still be able to play in their comp without joining if there’s a space available come Friday evening for example. If not….how about Ivanhoe? Use your Golflink to play in their Saturday comp…should be sweet.

If you’re happy enough to outlay $40-$50 a pop I’d be looking most closely at Growling Frog, Waterford Valley, Kingston Links….or private membership if being closer to home has to become a permanent deal. $150-$250 a month and the golfing world is your oyster.

Topic: Golf Talk / Is it really true...

Fair enough. I guess your post was more about being stuck behind hackers and the fact they didn’t know how to deal with the situation properly. Ignorance? Yep. Selfishness? Maybe. Definitely not regular golfers based on how long you waited for them to clear each green. Ah…...club membership certainly has its benefits.

Topic: Golf Talk / Is it really true...

Here is my view. I am a club member and I have played with groups of 3 in front and behind my group. I have never experienced playing a competition round that lasted longer than 4.5 hours, stroke included. Bottom line….I have never had a slow round. For those who can’t stay focused unless they’re going round in 3.5-4.0 hours…..I say comp golf is not your go. Go play the course on Monday or Friday on non-comp days when there’s no-one out there if it affects your game so much. Otherwise stop your whingeing. Complaining about slow play has become a trend. Unless you’re stuck behind hackers on a public track….sorry no sympathy from me.

Topic: Golf Equipment / Odyssey 2 ball vs Ping Craze E

Thanks for the comments. Yeah…..I don’t think the feel comin’ off the Odyssey 2-ball could be any softer. The reason I like both these putters is that the take-away is so effortless. On my current piece of junk I feel as if I got to drag the bastard back to make a putt, and when I do so it can easily slip inside or outside the line…sometimes both. My days of putting like this are over. I’m sick of pulling the trigger and just hoping.

Topic: Golf Equipment / Odyssey 2 ball vs Ping Craze E

That’s it! In a desperate effort to eliminate my routine 3 or 4 3-putt holes I’m buyin’ meself a new putter. Thought the Odyssey 2 Ball woz my man… but today saw the Craze E which is similarly weighted and just could be the answer. I know putters are a personal preference but is anybody using the Craze E and what do they think of it?

Sounds like he might have gone close to shooting his age and comin’ from a 19 handicapper that’s unfarkinbelievable!! Hat’s off to the old man…good golf requires passion and persistence. He’s just pulled a proverbial rabbit from a hat. Will probably shoot 90 next week!

Topic: Your Favourite Golf Courses / The New Croydon

Got out there yesterday for a bash of links golf. Man, this course is one tough mother. Thankfully I played with a member who acted as course guide coz this is links golf at its meanest! Let me share with you my first impressions.
Firstly, water features on just about every hole (No exaggeration believe me). Next, there are a number of blind tee shots that combined with long, thick penal rough can quickly bring about mental disintegration once a ball or two have simply “vanished”.
Finally, the hard and fast fairways and rock-hard greens really test your club selection and often your sanity!
Definitely a course that you would need to play many times before really feeling comfortable out there. The fairways and greens should settle as the course matures…until then lower the expectations just a tad as you tackle this beast! How are you Croydon members finding it?
