Topic: Sports Talk / Michael Phelps

I love my golf and have the utmost respect for Tiger but Phelps is better at his sport than Tiger is at his (IMO). Great, great athlete.

Topic: Golf Talk / Playing by yourself?

I go through periods where I enjoy it on my own but I enjoy playing with good friends more. I also play better when on my own but get frustrated easily because I tend to rush and stuff shots up.

I actually DID have a hole in one when playing on my own once. Luckily it was on the first hole (old Southern GC) and there were a couple of guys hanging around near the tee box to see it. Also it was lucky they saw it because I didn’t – I was looking straight into the glare of the sun. Of course, I didn’t get my name on the board which was a bummer.

Topic: Golf Equipment / 3 and 5 Wood?

As I’ve said elsewhere, I’ve dumped my 3 wood. I also haven’t carried a 5 wood for years. I carry a 1, 2, 3 and 4 hybrid, although I’ll usually take the 1 or 2 out of the bag (too many clubs) depending on the course.

I find the 1 hybrid goes almost as far as a 3 wood but is easier to hit.

You don’t find it newsworthy that he was a world class tennis player and is now coming good as a pro golfer?

Topic: Golf Equipment / what can I use for shaft glue?

I just used “Super Strength” Araldite in one of my clubs. According to the directions it takes 3 days to fully set so it’s been put away for 3 days, being held in place with plenty of tape.

If it comes apart at a later date I’ll let you know.

Topic: Golf Equipment / Golf ball finder?

Same concept as 3D glasses in a way – blocking/enhancing a particular colour spectrum. Get a small piece of blue cellophane and see if this does the same job. Polarised sunglasses should also enhance the white ball against a green background but needs plenty of light to work so beneath trees will limit effect.

Another way is getting your eyes “trained” to find a ball – you do this by placing another ball in the same area and this will give your brain a better perception of what to look for – strange but works.

Then there’s no need to find your original ball ;)

Topic: Golf Equipment / Cleveland HiBore Drivers

Cally FT3 has a smaller head for a 460cc driver
so easier off the deck

Sumo LArge large head

Why use a driver off the deck (when is not built for such situation) when a 3 -wood can do the job much better (when it’s built for that)
if you screw up the shot w the driver
you’d ask for it as far as i am concerned
it’s a high high risk shot by all accounts
if you r not laura davis try not to do it….

Not many pros can do a off the deck driver on a consistent basis I reckon

dont tell me it’s ego
this takes the cake for being stupid

it’s like using a driver to putt when it’s not built for it
when a putter will do the job

If Tiger plays Lefty will he be that good ?
You sure Square is Good ? Don’t Think So !
Good Golf is Fun plus the Great Outdoors…
In the Bag: Clubs and Balls. My Handicap is Bad Golf.

By using the driver off the deck (maybe just once or twice a round) I have been able to ditch the 3-wood as stated, allowing room for an extra wedge in the bag. Honestly, I have very little trouble hitting it off the deck and can connect as consistently as with my 3-wood.

There are some par 5’s (most) that I’m just not gunna reach so I’m comfortable playing a layup and hitting from 100 metres rather than trying to belt the hell out of a 3-wood hoping I can reach. On those holes that have little trouble within say 50 metres of the green (sideways and in front) I’ll take the driver out and give it a whack. If I duff it I’ll still get reasonable distance along the ground, usually to a layup distance anyway.

You can get yourself a HDTV USB stick for well under $100 ($49 @ MSY Computers in Melb). Then you can watch TV on your computer, including all the currently available HD channels.

Topic: Golf Equipment / Cleveland HiBore Drivers

I use a Cleveland HiBore (not XL) and find it to be pretty easy to hit. I also find I can hit a high or low shot at will by teeing the ball higher or lower or forward or back in the stance.

I’ve been considering upgrading to the XL but don’t need to muck around with my driving at present, which is pretty consistent with the HiBore. Mine is a stock 9.5° with Regular Aldila shaft.

Amazingly, it’s also easy to hit off the deck, which I didn’t expect when I got it, so I’ve ditched my 3 wood but use a 1 hybrid if the Driver is too long for the planned shot.

Topic: Golf Equipment / Best Clubs for Older Golfer

Cleveland HiBore irons are a “hybrid” set:

Cleveland HiBore

I have a set of these:

Macgregor M565

...that I got from eBay for a very good price and after using blades for almost 10 years followed by Ping ISI’s, IMO they’re brilliant for a slower swing speed.

I’ve complemented the set with some hybrids and taken out the 3 and 4 irons, although those irons are “hittable”.

Topic: Golf Talk / Adam Scott - the round of his life

Shoots a course record 61 to win the Qatar Masters. COULD have shot 58 or even better! When you consider that he missed an “easy” putt on 16 and missed two others in the middle of the back half that he’d been sinking all day, as well as shooting for par on the last (birdie hole for these guys) to ensure victory, it could have been the greatest round of all time. Still, it’s easy to talk about in a forum and a great round nonetheless. Congrats.

Topic: Golf Equipment / What is the bees knees in golf shoes?

I have some Callaways and agree with the previous poster who said they take a lot of breaking in. I had blisters on my blisters, but they’re ok now.

I also have a pair of Nike SP-6 and they are damn comfy. As I said on a previous post my last pair of Nikes lasted me many years and I’ll be happy for these to last half as long.

I also recently bought a pair of Footjoy Dryjoy Pro’s but I like my Nikes so much I gave the Dryjoys to my brother for Xmas.

Topic: Golf Talk / Blisters Blues

Last year I crushed the big toe on my left foot and nearly lost it. If you put a ripe plumb on the ground and jumped on it, that’s what my toe looked like. I have no idea of the amount of stitches they used to put it back together but there were plenty. There were only 4 tiny bone fragments they could find, the rest was crushed to pulp. As the surgeon said, they just stuck the bone fragments in there and sewed everything around them. I had to wear a moon boot for 6 weeks and couldn’t work for the same period. Grumpy_dog may remember a dude in a moon boot coming to his place to pick up a putter.

I still went and played a couple of rounds of golf during this time but drove around in a cart. I also beat my handicap on both occasions!

I agree, harden up!

A mate of mine has two wooden legs due to a car accident. Do you think that stops him from playing every week? Well yes it does, but two wooden legs is pretty cool so I just thought I’d mention it.

Topic: Ask Golf Guru - Golf Instruction / Trigger finger pressure for a swinger

Flinders post up a photo of your left hand grip. You should probably not get a sore hand where you describe.

Would you like a closeup of the hands at address?

I think my problem is that I’m very “left handish” with my swing, and all the various pressures seem to be on the left side, even though I’m a right hander. I think I pull the club with my left hand/arm/side rather than push with the right.

Could this be the reason I get a very sore left thumb (at the joint with the hand) after a game of golf? Too much left thumb/hand and not enough trigger finger/right hand?

Topic: The Lounge / Skins?

We don’t hear too much of skins these days.

Ever play/ed it? I never seem to win, although I’ve only played it a few times.

For a few years running I played for $10 per hole with two mates. We played on handicap, which cost me. I probably lost enough to buy a new set of clubs.

Some of my mates play better in this environment for some reason. No matter what form of golf I play, club championships, skins or whatever, my golf stays the same, i play no better or worse than normal.

It’s also very hard to call rules infringements on mates when you’re playing for money.

Any horror stories out there?

Topic: The Lounge / Losing your balls

What’s the most you’ve ever lost in a round? I lost 6 brand new Titleist balatas once at Sanctuary Cove Pines course. I bought them (a dozen) at the course and paid full price, so it was an expensive round. I think they cost me $9 per ball at the time!

Yesterday we played ambrose and our group went through 24+. I lost 5 personally and I know one of the other guys lost 5 and another guy was trying to smash windows in the houses next to the course (ok not deliberately) and I’m sure he went through at least 10 (3 on one hole that I remember) and I know the last guy went through at least 4.

I can’t bring myself to hit mine either.

Maybe Boz could organise a prize for Russell losing his virginity – the first Russell hole in one (of course, this would need to be verified)! This might encourage people to actually use the balls instead of sitting them on their desk peering out the top of their packaging box.

Topic: Ask Golf Guru - Golf Instruction / Gripping Down

What’s wrong with gripping down, as compared with shortening the club shafts? I’ve always gripped down between 1.5 and 2 inches and my brother holds ALL of his clubs at the base of the grip, costing himself probably 4 inches or so (I’m 6’ and he’s 6’2” and gets the ball out there ok).

The reason I ask is that I understand that shorter shafts generally give better control, but why shorten the shafts when you can just grip down? Keeping the longer shafts then gives you the opportunity to grip “up” for a wide, down wind, fairway.

Does gripping down affect the wrist hinge or something?

I have to make a few more slaes to be able to afford to
dress you guys in a style that Russell would approve of.

Remember to dress the part is half way to being the part,
a quote from my old coach Norman Von Nida.

How bright are your balls?

C’mon Boz, everyone knows Russell wears a shirt with a VB logo on the front. Perhaps CUB would come to the party?

While we’ve been sitting here looking at the screen, I had a bit of a chat with him, birds and bees stuff, you know. I’m not sure he gets the gist. I went to a few websites to show him “stuff” but he just sits there with that stupid grin.

It does make you want to give him a belting with a 4 iron. That’ll wipe the smile off his face (or put another one on it if you hit him a bit thin).
