Topic: Golf Equipment / Advice needed

X20 irons are great and sooo forgiving. then you need to think about a driver, fairway woods and/or hybrids, wedges and a putter which if you are like me (similar handicap) could well be different brands. Go and try out as many different brands as you can without getting too confused then buy the whole set from the US via internet. There are plenty of threads here to tell you who is reputable. You may need to split it into 2 deliveries of less than $1000 so as to avoid GST coming in but need to balance this against the delivery charges.

Topic: Golf Equipment / Melbourne Demo Days

Gead
What other brands were available ? Was it very crowded or easy to get to try a few different clubs ?
I had to work so it means waiting another month unless I can get to Sandringham in a fortnight.

Hugeslice
Try gripping it down a bit and see how you go. I had similar problems as the standard length is a pretty long 45.5”. After finding it much better I had it shortened to 44” and find most fairways except during Melbourne’s current gales.

Topic: Golf Equipment / Melbourne Demo Days

I am in dire need of a 3 wood and a 5 wood or hybrid 18-19, trying in the shop is a waste of time. Where can I find out where and when demo days are being held. Want to try TM, Ping and Adams.
I live in Brighton and so anything bayside, south or south-east is preferred.
thanks guys

Topic: Golf Equipment / TaylorMade Burner Draw or Nike Saquatch Sumo Square

Go internet from the US, even with postage it is heaps cheaper than Oz. I got mine on special in Singapore whilst I was working there but all the rest of my clubs have been over the Net from Edwin Watts. You will see lots of threads with the many other on-line retailers who are fine. EBay maybe dodgy but if you find something interesting just do a search here and see if the seller has been mentioned as good or bad

I am a member of the slicer club and I swear by my Draw Burner Driver. Just go out and buy one. You won’t stop slicing until you fix your swing but at least you will find the right-hand side of the fairway fairly often. Also, look to change to a ball that doesn’t give you too much side spin. That combo has made a huge difference to my scores. I have had mine for 9 months and occasionally I get a little draw but not a single hook.

Topic: Golf Equipment / TaylorMade Burner Draw Drivers

I bought one for $360 in Singapore october last year and the price has plummeted since. I am a consistent slicer and it has helped me heaps. As an approx 18 marker I can now make most fairways and average 200-230m. I would not swap it for quids. The main thing is the huge sweet spot. To me this is the epitome of game improvement clubs. One tip is that it comes with either 45.5” or 46” shaft which is way too long for me. I reduced it to 44” and have seen many more fairways. A mate who doesn’t slice much bought the ordinary Burner and is also very happy. A no risk purchase for hackers IMHO

Topic: Golf Equipment / Whats an "A-Wedge"?

In the callaway X-20’s the AW is 50deg and between the PW 45 and SW 55. I use it more than any club other than my driver and putter.

Topic: Golf Equipment / 3 wood for a slicer

Thanks for the input guys. I must say that my main aim is to win money from my mates, at 57 I have no great aspirations other than trying for an occasional birdie putt on long par 4’s.

One last question Nigel, I take it that the lot of offset allows time for the hands to get into the right position ? So the offset and the closed face are really slightly compensating for swing issues ? I assume you have made your own wood but what brands have a similar combination that I could try in a 4 or 5 wood. Also what type of shaft should I look at to get more height, should I go for the 50gm REAX I have in my 10.5 draw burner which works well for me ?

The other option I am considering is going to a 2 hybrid as I find my 4 hybrid very easy to hit consistently with a nice high trajectory.

Topic: Golf Equipment / 3 wood for a slicer

Making me think hard Nigel, probably 20-30 degrees left ie club going outside in and not very deep divot at all. Flight is quite low and starts left of centre and if I’m lucky stays in the right fairway. Carry would be 170 then 20m run.

I had a Callaway X 15deg with regular factory steel shaft but I sold it as I couldn’t make it work. I am looking for 200m+ straight.

The problem stems from lack of hip rotation which is not getting any better with age. However I can get my draw burner driver out there 230m on a good swing with a carry of over 200m and a nice trajectory. The driver has the regular reax 50gm shaft.

I hit my Callaway X-20 steel 5 iron dead straight 160m and hold greens ok. I have a Callaway X 4 hybrid (bent to 22deg) which gives me a high trajectory 170m with only a little fade so ok into greens

Currently I have a Callaway X 19deg F/wood gives me 180m but with a more pronounced fade which makes it useless hitting into greens with no room on the left.

I am trying to fill in between the driver and 4 hybrid with one or to clubs

stiff shaft and/or lengthen the shaft ! You’ve got me intrigued Gribbles, can you please explain the science ?

I actually cut 1.5” off my driver so I could get it under control, 45.5” was just too much.

Topic: Golf Equipment / 3 wood for a slicer

No matter how much I spend on lessons, and it has been plenty, I am still going to have a bit of a slice. I have a draw burner driver which helps to compensate and usually I only see the right rough once or twice per round. I sold my Callaway X 3 wood as I couldn’t keep it on the fairway and I am looking for a 3 wood to help me like the draw burner driver does.

Any suggestions ?

Topic: Golf Equipment / Titleist golf ball advice

I was using Noodles but whilst doing the Fantom trial Boz inspired me to try a few other balls and found an old xmas present dozen of Optima TS in the garage. Since I started using them I have shaved 4 strokes off my handicap in a few weeks. I get 230m off the tee, without too much slice and I comfortably hold the greens with all my irons. My putting is still crap but that has nothing to do with the ball. I can get about 45 holes per ball and since it is going straight I haven’t lost any.
Now you have me worried and I need help, are the Optima TS balls finished ? I looked at ebay and found nothing other than practice balls.
What advantages other than supply do the TS Plus+ and the NXT extreme have ?

ps Back since the communists at the AFL nobbled free enterprise and knee-capped the mighty blues I have been saying we will recover and get back-to-back premierships for 2010-11.

I am the other way and trying to swap a 5 wood for a hybrid. I find the hybrids much easier to control. Any interest in swapping for a Callaway X 5 wood 19* with a regular steel shaft and some money ?

Hi Boz
How does the Tour Lady compare to the other balls in the Fantom range ? Also, where do you see it fitting in the price range ?
