I thought (at a glance) he had a Callaway ball too. Driver looked like B’stone/Tourstage.

Topic: Golf Talk / Barnbougle Dunes in winter - worth it???

As a born and bred Tasmanian, I think the weather factor is completely over dramatised. Yes, it can be cold in winter but the coldest golf I’ve played in Australia was Canberra. It can rain but not like the drenching I got at Coolum. You get the idea. People seem to think that when you cross the strait your’e in the Antarctic. Anyone remember the opening day of the 06 Aust Open at Royal Sydney?

Playing Barnbougle is a pleasure regardless of the weather and I wouldn’t think anything Tassie could offer would rival a Norwegian winter. Go for it , you will love it.

Topic: Golf Talk / Compressing the ball

I’d say very possible. I seem to do it differently every swing unfortunately!!

Things like angle of attack, fat/thin contact, face angle at impact etc all would effect compression.

Topic: Golf Talk / John Daly still hard at it!

I’ve never understood holding up JD for his “honesty etc”.

He is an alcholic who is slowly killing himself and everyone says Good on ya John. All the so called fans and sponsors might be better off trying to discourage the self-destructive behaviour instead of fuelling it. Callaway tried that though and what thanks did they get.

Dave_1, how can you say Harmon has a problem because he dropped Daly? He came to Butch with the usual “I’ve cleaned up,going to practice etc” line and Butch said OK. He didn’t clean up or practice , he continued to get pissed. Harmon makes his huge fortune because of his reputation for helping players get better. Why should he throw that away for someone who is not taking the advice?

Sad to say it won’t be long till we’ll be reading his obituary and everyone will be saying what a great guy he was and what a waste.Too little ,too late.

Topic: Golf Equipment / Bridgestone J33r 460...reviews please

I’ve just got the 420cc version and it does exactly what I hoped.

My previous driver was a R510 TP 10.5 and although I hit it very straight I felt I was losing distance. The ball flight was high with no roll.

The J33R though, is a 9.5 and starts lower and flattens out then releases when it lands. Unfortunately my swing has been a little off since I got it but when it is swung well it is a great feeling driver and very long. It’s been out since ‘05 I think but, unlike some of the other companies, they only seem to put out new models when they improve on the the older stuff.

I wouldn’t recommend it for a high handicapper but if you are a half decent ballstriker they are great. I also like the sound when hit in the middle – bit of a clank if hit off centre though.

Topic: Golf Equipment / What's in the Bag - Week 41 (2008)

I have noticed that more pros are ditching the PW from their sets in preference for 48* Vokeys etc. Four of the five winners in this article have.

Any idea of the reason? Are the PW’s too clunky, soles too wide, too heavy or what?

Topic: Golf Talk / Charles Barkley

Sir Charles has always been a showman and I wouldn’t be surprised if this is just him taking the p… Have you seen the youtube clips of coaches “straightening out his swing” to show how good they are?Probably a nice little earner/attention getter that makes some pocket money for Vegas/keeps his face out there.

As for him being fat, he was known as the Round Mound of Rebound when he entered the NBA, trimmed down later in his career and has returned to his former weight. I’d still back him in any athletic endeavour over any on this forum even at his current weight.

Topic: Golf Talk / Mission Hills

A friend of mine has just come back and really enjoyed it . He played 9 of the courses. Norman is the hardest and Annika and Ozaki the easiest. (No Tiger course) The others are Faldo ,Olazabal,Els…can’t think of any more, check the website.

He said the same thing re the staying on the cart path etc and the caddies repair all divots and pitch marks. He took loads of photos and it all looked pretty good. Some of the houses along some of the fairways are well into the 10’s of millions.

Topic: Golf Classifieds / TM R510 TP driver 7.5. $200

I’ve just seen a Tour issue 9.5 (head only) at $122 US with 4 hours to go on ebay so they hold their value fairly well.

Mine is 10.5 and I only found out it was Tour issue by chance after reading about Txxxx serial numbers having had it for 6 months.

Topic: Golf Classifieds / TM R510 TP driver 7.5. $200

It might be an old driver but I still haven’t found anything to kick mine out of my bag. If you aren’t worried about resale value and want a good driver you won’t go wrong with one of these. 7.5* is a pretty specialised market though.

Topic: Golf Equipment / what percentage of tour pros use a Titleist ball?

And what were the details of the settlement? Settlement in these cases doesn’t necessarily mean complete exoneration.

One man’s “facts” are anothers opinions. You refer to other marketing and reader posts being misleading yet you declare that because most pro’s use the ProV then Titleist make the best balls. That is not proof and does not make it a “fact”.

Even if your posts do have good intentions, the point I’m making is that , just because you swear by Titleist does not mean they are the solution for us all. I don’t mind their stuff – I have a Vokey wedge and use their balls sometimes,my brother loves his 735 CM’s – but I don’t like the “missionary zeal” with which you push it and the kind of sneaky way it’s done.

There was another poster on here a while ago with the same affliction for Srixon and it just wears a bit thin after a while.

Credit us with a little intelligence, we are all capable of making our own purchasing decisions.

Well done though, you’ve got me posting about the mighty Achushnet and keeping their products in the spotlight.

I’m sorry but I still don’t get your motivation for your post if it is not to promote this brand.

What are these “facts” you are enlightening us with? That most pro’s use Pro V1’s proves what exactly to the average handicap golfer?

They are just another OEM and I think we can all make up our own mind what suits us as individuals. Unfortunately this may mean that we don’t all spend vast amounts on a complete Titleist fit out even though that must seem misguided to you.

Perhaps while you are giving us the facts you could update us on the legal action between Titleist and Bridgestone regarding the formers alleged ripping off of designs for the ProV from the latter.

Topic: Golf Talk / Jean van de Velde

I don’t think he is a broken man at all. I think he handled the debacle with as much grace and dignity possible.

He’s done some commentary on Euro Tour events and it was the most informative and entertaining I’ve heard.

He’s won since and can still play at a very high level.

I think others make a lot more of his mistake than he does. After he said “It’s not like anybody died.”

Good luck to him in the Open, I’d love to see him do well.

Topic: Golf Talk / anyone shopped at golf dimensions gold coast?

If it’s the place I think it is,they have lots of gear but as Gribbles says it is way,way over priced.

A year or two ago I was just looking at the TM R510 TP’s and the salesman started giving me a spiel about how they get them from a contact in the US and were “exactly what the Tour players used.” I’d only recently heard about T serial #’s and B stamps etc and mentioned that because the one I had just bought was a Tour Issue and I hadn’t realised this until after as the seller hadn’t mentioned it! Now I don’t think (at least hope) I came across as a smartarse but Boy did it go down like a lead balloon with this bloke. “I’ve never heard of that, sounds like BS, these are definitely what the Tour players use ,so you know more than our bloke in the US do you? etc, etc”

I just told him that I had purchased a Tour club for half the price that he was asking for the retail version and wouldn’t be bothering to look at anything else and walked out, never to return.

My experience then wasn’t favourable in the least. As I said I wasn’t being a knowall or condescending but got a mouthfull and the prices were super high. They may have changed since (hopefully) but at the time I got the impression they hadn’t realised the effect online retailers were having on used prices.
