Hi mekat, I don’t post much, but thought I’d pop in and say that your journal is probably one of my favourite topics on the isg forums. I like reading detailed accounts of rounds from serious golfers. Thanks for all your posts.

Topic: Playing the game / Max's Journey to stay below 10

This Saturday was Canadian foursomes. I was paired up with an elderly gentleman off 18. He could hit the ball quite far and we got off to a good start. He was super nervous though… As is always the case in foursomes, esp. If you’re playing with someone you do t know well. I think he duffed or skulled all his greenside chips. No biggie though, I had insisted before the round that neither of us were allowed to say the word “sorry” for the entire round. Finished at +6 and was good fun. I do prefer foursomes when you’re paired up with someone you know well though.

Topic: Playing the game / Styles' journey to Scratch and beyond!

Hi styles, I had the same issue: pw at 110 and sw at 90. I removed the hybrid and added a gap wedge for shots at 100. Best decision I made in a while. Good luck with your new club and options

Shot 5 over recently at stonecutters ridge. Great course, fairly easy to score on when not hitting from the tips.

I was battling with my driver, on the first tee hit two drives oob, thank god it was a stableford round..

I did manage to sink 4 birdies, three of those on low index holes giving me 4 pointers.. I don’t really get a lot of those anymore. Have been focusing on hitting greens recently and walked away with 12 yesterday. Need to grab another lesson with the big stick, its all over the place.

in unrelated news I notice that I’ve shit under 10 over for my 16 last comp rounds. High single digits, sure but still fairly consistent.

That should read hit and not shit….

anyway, make that 17 rounds.

Weekday comps??? No problems at all even week end comps I just rock up and wait for a free spot.

give the proshop a call they’ll know how busy the week end and week day comps get. Also ask if the joining fee can be waived.

Topic: Golf Talk / Which credit card for the golfer?

Hi all, i know amex and other providers have rewards programs targeted specifically at golfers. These programs are available to US card holders and include points redeemable / offers at private golf courses, lessons, pga tour event tickets etc..

Are there any similar programs aimed at the australian market?

Topic: Golf Talk / Best matchplay advice

Lots of holes come down to a putting contest. I recommend not giving anything over a foot long. You’d be surprised how many short putts I’ve seen missed in match play.

Topic: Golf Talk / Tips for playing Ryde Parramatta?

Agreed with syd golfer who was kind enough to invite me out for a couple of rounds. Pace of play no slower than other Sydney courses.

great track with some truly great holes. Cored about a month ago but the greens were already in fine form last Thursday.

as for tips, yes hit the ball where you can see it. Id suggest putting driver away on 3 8 13 and 15. stay on right side of fairway on 10. Have fun its a great course.

Lessons are slowly sinking in. Although I’m still not hitting the high draw off the tee with regularity, I hit many low stingers with the driver to the fairway with little or no distance loss.

I’ve also decided to focus more on greens hit and played well on Saturday hitting 12 greens. Still walked off with 7 over with some shocking putting. I’d like to blame the cored greens but truthfully I putted poorly. Maybe a good focus for my next lesson.

in unrelated news I notice that I’ve shit under 10 over for my 16 last comp rounds. High single digits, sure but still fairly consistent.

I was also told of the no caddying rule, and have therefore been careful not to offer advice, carry clubs, pull buggies etc. spectating is another issue

Thanks RD. I think the local rule in question was to avoid over-zealous husbands (not parents in this case) being a bit too present.

I think it’s a fair call to request it, but to make a local rule and condition of play out of it is another matter entirely. I have replied with a thank you and a promise that I’d stay out of everyone’s way as much as possible.

Ok so this has now been resolved. I received this e-mail:

“After consultation with Golf NSW and the match committee, it is clear that due to the nature of Golf Course being a public course and a parkland, we cannot stop any member of the public watching or following players. Thus your presence is fine, we will seek to accommodate everyone as best we can by putting Your Wife in a group with those ladies who don’t mind someone accompanying the group.

I hope you and Your Wife are happy with this ‘middle’ ground.”

Okay so pennants season is over. I did ok winning four of my six matches. Some I won playing crap, others I lost playing well. Its the way it goes. All in all I loved it. I really enjoyed match play, playing to beat someone, not just playing the percentage shots.

our team did get relegated though. Too bad. Or is it?

So now its back to lessons and becoming a better player. First lesson with my pro today. I told him i’d like more distance off tee and to learn to hit driver into the wind.

he had me hit with a launch monitor behind me.

clubhead speed at 107 mph, carry at 201 yards, smash at 1.35 launch angle in the 20s.

some minor adjustments saw me setting up for low draws as opposed to my stock high fade. Clubhead speed stayed constant, carry jumped to 228 and smash closer to 1.41.

And that was just with setup changes. Oh and this was range balls, not pro vs or any type of premium ball.

Also learnt how to punch a driver into the wind.

Loved the lesson. Can’t wait to try it out on the course. Next thing I want to work on is tightening up wedge play.

How do they define an observer?

The Rules say an “observer’’ is one who is appointed by the Committee to assist a referee to decide questions of fact and to report to him any breach of a Rule.

What other rules are we not playing by?

I brought up this very point. I think the term they use is “spectator”. I have asked for the local rule and condition of play in question to be sent to me (those were not available on their website).

I also note that the course itself is on public parklands. I was told that shoud I be walking my dog there, that would be perfectly reasonable. I don’t have a dog. I will get to the bottom of this!

Topic: Rules of Golf / can local rules ban 'observers'?

Here is the explanation I just received as to the rule came about:

A situation arose a number of years ago in our match play Bronze where an ‘observser/spectator’ to an event was unsettling other players.  As a result a local rule was introduced to matchplay and we have extended it to our general competitions.  As said it is not an R&A rule it is a local rule implemented by the Associates at YYYYYYYYY and the XXXXXXXXXX Bronze participating clubs.

still no news as to how it will be implemented..

I’ve asked her to find out what the definition of an observer is, how this rule will be implemented and what the penalty for breach of rule is.

Then next week I will go and observe the lady captain.

Topic: Rules of Golf / can local rules ban 'observers'?

Hey all my wife’s club has recently banned ‘observers’ from the ladies comps. I’d walk around with my wife’s group every now and then being careful not to offer advice, carry clubs, bags or tend flags as I knew caddies were banned. But observers? Can this be done? On a public course where ppl walk their dogs?

Topic: Golf Talk / more useful: compass or gps?

I ask as I was explaining to my wife why smartphones were banned from comps… Because they have a compass, or so if been told.

her answer: of what use would a compass be?

I guess to match prevailing winds. I’m not sure I would find it that useful either.

So is it a silly rule?

Topic pretty much says it all. What would you find more useful on a golf course?

I personally have not used a compass before as I hear they are banned, but I’m not sure what I’d do with one if they weren’t..
