Topic: Golf Equipment / Which Driver

You need rules in some way or another but I think there are ‘too many’ rules in golf….

Out of 18 holes I might use that driver 12- 14 times depending on the course. Out of those 12 – 14 I will hit, maybe 10 (feeling optomistic here AB) that go well/straight/where I wanted…as to whether I get any to go further/better than if I was using, say a Ping G5 (first choice) is highly unlikely…

I used to play off 18 when I was 14 and have gone down hill since then….I dont see me challenging anyone and at this stage I dont play comps, so the issue of non-conforming is a non event!

I hear what you say mickyboy, but come on, you only have to get out of bed in the morning when you are hit with rules…cant we at least find sanctuary on the couse?

Hey AB…youve given me the driver bug…I cant stop looking on ebay now and have my eyes on a Ping G5 and a Bang O Matic! The BB has been going well at the range and I take it out for its maiden voyage this Sunday…I might have to get another for comps!!! I can see a divorce coming on!

The ‘rules’ as compared to conforming equipment are two different things in my book. We all play by the rules in a club competition, that’s why we can compare scores and have a winner etc etc.
Conforming equipment on the other hand allows everyone to have the same advantage or disadvantage (whatever way you look at it) in the equipment they are using.
If the rules and the conforming equipment are different for everyone or if golfers decide to not adhere then the humble golf comp or the amatuer events become a free for all.
Remember, golfers are given a handicap to negate differing abilities. To say that a high h’capper can use non conforming gear coz’ they are hopeless anyway is giving them an advantage and also insulting?
I am in no way a rules police but maybe I should go and check some of the 18+ cappers gear in the comps coz they seem to beat me all the time even though I shoot a low score?
Even playing field. The USGA and R&A came to this agreement this year didn’t they?

Mate my personal opinion is who gives a sh!t.. You are playing in local comps (I assume) not for the Australian Open. I think the “rules police” get a little to excited at times. If you are playing in pennant or in high class amateur or professional events then yeah hang it up. But honestly if you get questioned by a member of the “rules police” tell them that this is the conforming version bought out by Callaway as you have had it checked out. I can honestly tell you that they won’t even know! Being an authoritarian is a disease for some people – call them on it and tell them to prove it does not conform!!

Hope that helps!

Mate if you are happy and you hit it well then that is all that matters. If you can stand up on a tee and feel confident with the stick in your hand I would say half the battle is won!! Price wise, yeah I think you did well. Performance is always the telling factor over price. I have hit $300 drivers that out perform $800 ones! The same as sometimes high quality, high price drivers often outperform sh!tty cheap ones. Feel and personal performance is what really matters!

So lets tell people to break the rules ehhh.
The other 99% of players in a club comp who comply are disadvantaged.
Golf is about a level playing field thats why we have a handicap system.
Ummm, I know, maybe suggest to get rid of that too? or just make up your own handicap depending on what you feel like on the day.

Even more dribble!

Your ‘expert’ opinion resides in your head. The problem you seem to have is the bias to everything LD and as you stated very early on in this thread that golfers owe nearly everything to the sport of LD! What came first the chicken or the egg?

You need to get over yourself and just chill. Your reference about yourself not forgetting conjours up a picture of the brain of an elephant (and therefore the body).

Anyway, you seem very passionate about your sport and that is great but I don’t think that should extend into being so opinionated. Like I said – chill. It’s not always you versus anyone that doesn’t agree with you and trying to win votes (this ain’t a popularity contest forum!)

1. I have never stated that LD is the pinnacle of golf. Check you facts on that one.

Yep you are right that was someone else.

Please stop the dribble now, I’m drowning!

The pinnacle of any technically oriented sport always filters down improvements to the basic level.

Ok, not trying to bring anyone down here but I personally don’t regard LD as the pinnacle of the sport of golf. It is a great twist of the sport but it is far from the pinnacle! If it were the pinnacle (ala F1 of motorsport) then I think the LD guys would be banking the millions not the PGA pros on nearly all tours across the globe.

My original comments if read carefully were about normal club golfers (and even the pros) and the technology limits being reached in that realm. I also said that I agreed that the technology maybe moving forward in the LD arena. Please go back and read it before jumping down anyones throat. Heck, if you go back and read your own posts Aussie bomber I think you even stated the very same thing:

I love your posts Nigelo. Do you even know half the stuff that is on the market? Have you received any prototype clubs of late?I agree it is over for the average golfer.

Please stop telling me that I am kidding myself. We all can agree to disagree here most of the time.

I believe that for normal golfers (club level and the pros) things have reached a peak (or getting very close) in the cor and moi area.
The next advances will be how to either ‘cheat’ the tests or push even further to the limits thru different designs and so forth.
One thing to note as mentioned is the shaft technology. The next biggest gains will probably be here (almost certain).
The reference to LD and it’s overall influence on the equipment that normal golfers are using (and I put the PGA pros in this category of ‘normal golfers’) has probably been over emphasized. We are talking a whole different category of people and equipment that as stated performs differently and sometimes won’t even perform until the clubhead speeds are way up there. How this correlates back to normal golfers is sometimes (and probably mostly) irrelevant.

it’s the same chris either way.

But really why bother with just 1/2 inch difference?

Just try them shorter and see if they perform.

Topic: Golf Equipment / Why are tour prefered drivers so more exspensive?

Simply because the OEM’s can charge more. People can say they are using a TP model just like the pros use. But there is alot of difference between a retail TP head and a real TP head. Real TP heads from a tour van allow you to choose face angle, lie, weight (the positioning of any discretionary weight) shaft etc etc.
If you want these options then alot of the better component makers have offered all these for years.

Great points there. The Aus dollar has been strong for quite a while now.
BTW you would cringe if you knew what some non-retail, non-sponsored Aust PGA members are buying prov1’s for everyday of the week without any negotiation from Titty.

Topic: Golf Equipment / buying local

we get ripped off here full stop.
Notice how imported goods prices went up when the dollar was at 50cUS? Now that we are at 94cUS I haven’t seen many price decreases.

I had my pro shaft a Cobra L4V head with a Diamana whiteboard shaft the other day (hits unbelievable now). He asked me how much that set up cost me – answer just on $400 AUD (all imported from some of my connections). He sells the Cobra driver for a discounted price of $520 with the 20c stock shaft!
Anyway, just a rant as things won’t change here in Oz. Lucky all the stuff being imported by Mr and Mrs Smith thru the post and couriers doesn’t show up in our current account figures as the deficit would be waaaaay higher in reality!
cheers

Topic: Golf Equipment / Project X Flighted

I didn’t think I was slagging them off (that much anyway). Like I said I have hit many shafts and these were offered to me but looking at the characteristics I declined. And after doing some ‘web’ research decided that these weren’t for me. These maybe a great shaft but I am purely comparing them to PX performance.
So you retail a set (8) for less than $150 AUD? If so that is a great price and everyone interested should order from you.
There’s some business for you Tim.
cheers

Topic: Golf Equipment / Project X Flighted

I believe he is on about the fst KB TOUR shafts. Same bloke that was involved with the PX design. Constant weight design (or supposed to be)
‘Supposed’ to be like the PX but smooth (better feel not as harsh)! I personally doubt that they can have the characteristics of the PX and yet feel better. How do you get the lower spin rate and flatter flight of the PX without having a stiff butt mid and tip? Surely the softening in the KB shafts would make them ‘feel’ better but the spin rate would increase and the flight change?

Read some of the US forums (read hype). Some have liked the shafts others have not.
I was offered some for $150 a set but declined as I have way too much shite as it is.
Might be the perfect shaft for some and not others but I did read something interesting comparing the KB shaft to Nippon 1150 tours and the conclusion was that in feel and smoothness there was no perceived difference. I play the Nippons 1150’s now and they are the best shaft I have tried so far and I have tried heaps (DG, PX, PX flighted, TT tour concepts, Nippon 950wf, Rifles).

Topic: Golf Equipment / Recommendation for carry bags

Buy a good quality bag! Don’t skimp as others may suggest.

I would argue that if you are carrying your clubs then the better quality the bag and strap system the BETTER you will score. Less fatigue and stress on your back, shoulders etc etc.
I ask the question why would you score better if your clubs were OEM? Spend your money where the greatest benefit will come. That is not always with the gear that actually does the hitting. To suggest that is showing naivety.

Try out as many as you can but make sure that you put weight in it at the store as this will test how the straps sit on ur shoulders.

I have used: Titleist, Ogio, bridgestone, Tourstage and cheap crap bags. The cheap bags last 5 seconds. The Ogio bags are worth every cent and are well made. The Titty bag was ok and lasted a fair bit. I am not sure who makes them now though. The Bridgestone and Tourstage bags are first class ordered from Japan and are quality stand bags. Yes there is a difference between the US/Aus market bags and the bags destined for the Japanese market (and you will pay more).

Anyway, that is my rant.
Don’t skimp if you can help it.

Topic: Golf Equipment / Cobra L4V Driver

I shafted a L4V F 9 deg the other day with an Accuflex Icon V2 shaft (S) @ 45” long. Also added 12 grams weight to bring it upto my preffered head weight. The F head I have is almost dead square but I believe they are suppose to be closed?

Firstly the Cobra head has that crappy sound but you could get used to it I suppose. Secondly I am not used to hitting such a shallow head but I am warming to it. Thirdly it is as long as anything I have used. Fourth, very easy to hit this straight. A not so perfect swing or off centre strike still flies quite straight and nearly as long as good strikes.

Anyway my impressions are:
-very easy to hit straight
-flight can still be worked but it seems a little bit harder to do with this head than what I am used to.
-very forgiving on mishits with not too much distance loss
-quite a large sweetspot. This is why I believe it is a well designed head. I wouldn’t get too hyped up about it but it does what it is supposed to do.
-shots dead centre and just below the centre line have the best trajectory for me. Shots higher up on the face tend to be high but not ballooning at all.
-This head shaft combo I am currently using gives quite alot of run.
-nice to look at for an unconventional shape
-crap sound
-will be my gamer for while.

Is it worth $600 AUD with the stock shaft? I doubt it. That is why I was lucky enough just to get a head with my specs.
