Well… I finally got back on the scales yesterday morning.

97.5kgs!

Was not making a concerted effort, but had been off the grog for a fortnight and working pretty hard in the garden. Wife was chuffed, as it’s the lightest she’s ever seen me since we’ve known each other.

So the goal is to keep it at or below this level until the sun comes up after winter and activity can really ramp up.

Golfnut…. you are a freak! Top effort mate and you should be super proud.

Might be time to get the charts out and give an update methinks…

So my weight hasn’t changed much in a few weeks but apparently my body fat has dropped 3.5. That can’t be a bad thing!!!

AB …..... with the hole above (322 metre par 4) you ever copnsidered playing it backwards?

By that I mean …..... tee off with whatever club gets you 120 or so, (so that you fall short of the fairway bunkers)........... and then for your second shot, go with your trusty 5 wood for the remaining 200 metres.

You could also just split the difference and go 4 iron 4iron. One advantage in that is after your tee shot (and seeing the result) you can make the same swing again …. giving due consideration to the way the ball flew in the first instance (eg left or right).

There are so many different ways to play any hole AB, try them all ….. and see which way gives you the most confidence.

AB been thinking about your question to me, what has made the biggest difference in my game?

I would have to say now after thinking about it that it was having my instructor video tape me and showing me my backswing in slow motion and pointing out that I did not turn and he showed me a sequence of Luke Donald where his right elbow finished compared to mine and I worked hard on that!

I’ll see if I can find an image to help you understand!

Whoops…..re-read last post. I sound a bit synical which is not my intent ,just trying to reinforce my train of thought and get views….hope no one took offense. ;)

The other AB (AB2)

Naa mate does not sound cynical to me it sounds like you are evaluating the hole and what you feel comfortable playing!

1st you must play a club that you are comfortable that you would hit the fairway with most of the time! If that’s a 9i well so be it you then have an easy 2nd shot past trouble and to your favourite 80m shot!

This is a Par 4 correct? OR should I say a Par 5 to Handicap! Take the 5 and move on to a hole that is not as difficult to get your Birdies to Handicap! I think that once you start playing this hole as a Par 5 you will begin to see how easy it really is to play to Handicap, your not a scratch golfer so why try and play it as a scratch golfer has to?

So in my opinion you could play this hole, 9i (to 120m), 9i (to 240m). 82m to go, GW (onto green) and 2 putts for a Handicap Par and never even look like being near trouble may even get the odd Par with a one putt!

Its been a while since I last checked in. Things have been going along nicely with the weight loss. Started the year at 131kg now down to 107kg as of this morning. So 24kg off so far all told and nearly 10 inches off my waist. Been Riding 40km’s a day and running around 5 kms every 2nd day. Eating good food and no beers or soft drink I am certain has helped heaps. I am doing the city to surf in 1 months time and would love to be able to knock at least 1 hour off last years time and to run the whole way would be a bonus but i am confident I can get there. I have said goodbye to the Big and Tall mens wear shops and I am loving the fact I can walk in to a normal shop and buy clothing straight off the shelf.

Started 131kg
Now 107kg

Waist Pant size 46
Now Pant size 36-37

I did a 10km running session of hill repeats this week, follow by a squad swimming of 3km the next day.

Will keep posting the progress

AB… I haven’t forgotten it, but a few of the Momma’s have gone into hibernation for the winter. It’s happened the last few years as getting ‘out and about’ is much harder in the colder months. Hence enthusiasm wanes and guilt runs smashing through the door… :)

I’ll do a weekly weigh in on Monday and get this up and running a bit more I think.

AB this was a tip from AB-LD ….

Work out your GOTO distance from the Green, 80m, 90m or 100m or whatever works for you, then practice this approach shot so you are confident you can hit and hold the green with this full approach shot. (Personally I use 105m – 85m or PW – GW)

Your next step is to work out what you need to use off the Tee to get you to that distance for your 2nd shot on Par 4’s or your 3rd shot on Par 5’s.

Example #1:
So lets say a 331m Par 4, less 105m or PW, leaves 226m say a 3 wood, if I hit it well I may be using my GW instead of PW but either will work for me.

Example #2:
457m Par 5, less 105m equals 352m, I could use 4i plus 5i plus PW/GW into the Green and be confident of hitting the fairway each time and as I practice my approach shots with these clubs I’m confident of hitting the greens more often as well.

That is some very powerfull course management, instead of simply grabbing the Driver and missing fairways.

Hope that helps and great work with the H&H out of the bunkers mate!

Had some backyard practice today which helped me realise a few things.1.Lack of practicing one technique can make you a beginner once again 2. All facets of my technique intertwine to make one style…..I have been re-practicing Phils Hinge and Hold chipping technique and discovered the practice I have taken to develop my grip, stance and swing all translate well into the method and also prevent bad techniques developing.I found, after it was pointed out, that I was breaking my wrists on the follow through, which is a big NO No. I found concerntrating on my grip and setup eliminated this..
3. I realised that maybe my strong points become my weakness. To explain this I had a lightbulb moment where I realised when I had this method very good I tried to use it everywhere I could and I do that with alot of techniques. Maybe one of my biggest ‘course management’ techneques I need is when and where to use a shot. I recall at Paradise Palms I played a pitch and roll with a 4ir to the green. A boring shot and not as pretty as a 7ir through the air but definately a better 7 out of 10 chance. I think this is one of my biggest weaknesses. Instead of choosing the 70% chance option I go for 10% as I know I can…….if I’m lucky.

I’m back after a long time away on AWOL
I have had a few up and down weeks in the gym and with only 2 months till my wedding the eating and gym work is really going to step up big time now.

the news is that I am down to 88.7kgs and haven’t been better in a long time. I am in a belt hole I had to stab into my belt after my Kokoda walk in 2006 and that is about 3 inches less than what I was in January.

I have been speaking to a good mate who is in his final semester of his Physiotherapy degree and he was talking about heart rates and fat burning and those sorts of things. One point, technically was contrary to what I had been lead to believe.

There are three heart rate stages that have different effects on calories burnt during exercise, I will try and explain it in words…

In energy use, you have proteins, carbs and fats that get burnt for energy…
In 0-2 minutes of exercise you will use proteins for energy, this is mainly because your heart rate is lower
When your heart rate increases to 60% of your theoretical max you are using little proteins, mostly fats and some carbs (in theory, the fat buring heart rates)
when your heart rate exceeds 75-80% you kick into the carb burning phase, ie, little proteins, some fats and more carbs, BUT although you are in the carb buring phase, you are still burning more fats that what you do at the lower heart rate, simply because you are needing and buring lots of all of your energy stores.

So from knowing this, I have been trying to really up my heart rate for prolonged periods, at least once a week I am trying to do an hour on the cross trainer at a min heart rate of 160 (for me this is about 82-85% of my max heart rate)
After an hour doing this I have burnt about 600 calories….

Another long winded post from me that may not have any benefit to anyone, but if you are able to take something away from this enjoy the heart rate :)

Nice work Bump,

I have tried to mix up training sessions esp heart rate zones. I swear a long walk on the beach on an empty stomach is the best for me.
It must be said after my long documented struggle to lose kilos that I need to get everything right every day, food, water, vitiams and exercise inc.
I have been keeping a food and exercise diary on the LIVESTRONG website and energy in Vs energy out doesn’t always mean weight loss. For a two week period I dropped the calories to about 1000 and lost about a kilo. But its great to learn what the energy value is in food and I have a good record when I go to the specialist.
Will keep you guys posted
121.4 this morning

Thanks Bump, something to think about.

Another thing I have noticed is that the more I eat the more weight I drop, as long as I am doing the hard work to burn it off!!!....and lately I have been eating quite a bit of crap and doing less excercise (result of lots of shitty weather) and have found that my weight has not budged in either direction. So I guess I have increased my metabolism and it is burning up the extra calories for me. I’m still trying to run at least once or twice a week plus the usual workouts so am still active but not as much as I was before daylight savings ended.

Anyway, still sitting on about 91.6kgs….hope to start moving again soon and get under that 90kg mark. Having said that, wife can’t keep her hands off me lately and says she is more than happy for me to just maintain where I am!!!! Gotta love that!!!
